Why you should maybe listen to me I started this year with a strong inclination to make Facebook advert work whether Mark Zukerberg liked it or not. I was tired of just dashing them my hard earned sweat without getting result. So the ultimate journey began I spent some good money you know, did some late night research and in the end it paid off. I’m glad it did. It is that same knowledge I want to pass down to you today. I didn’t end at just acquiring the knowledge….. I started implementing what I had learnt seriously.

You can see some of my results below

Recently, I ran advert to grow my chatbot list and the result was quite impressive and that is to say, I run adverts in the very competitive business niche. See my messenger bot results below.

A massive 100 comments in just 24 hours

The advert above is for a client of mine and it was bringing in at least 9 sales every day for their fashion item. I had to cover some aspect of the advert….. you know na because of world people.

Let’s move into the real deal.

Why Facebook Marketing?  Facebook has over 15 million active Nigerians. A good percentage of that number are waiting to buy something from you.  With Facebook marketing, you can reach the exact people that will be interested in your offerings.  You can measure the stats.. You see what is working and what is not.  You spend depending on your budget.

 It is one of the best places in the world to do your adverts right now

Facebook Advertising VS Organic Reach Facebook Advert- It’s the promotion you do on facebook where you are required to pay Facebook to display your ad. You are actually paying Mr Zukerberg to show your advert to certain people who are likely to be interested in your business. Organic Reach- This is the type of promotion you either do on your personal profile or Fan page. The type of advert you do when you have a bag or shoe to sell…. You post on your facebook wall for your family and friends to see. You do not pay for this type of promotion on Facebook Which of the two should you go for? While I’m not totally against organic reach, the best way to put your business out there is to pay for your advert to reach the exact audience who are interested in your business. Let me make this clearer The target market for my business are small business owners. I have a personal facebook profile filled with my friends, family members and ex-colleagues.

These people aren’t interested in doing business, in fact, most of them are workers. If I depend solely on promoting to these people then I will be wasting time on it because they aren’t interested in my business. Of course, it is okay to promote on your Facebook timeline from time to time but make sure you are growing your business through ADVERTSING.

Your Customer Avatar Before you go into facebook to advertise, you have to first decipher who your customer is. If you get this wrong, nothing else about your advert will matter because you will be losing your money on ad without getting any result. That is why it is very important to get this right. You should be able to answer the questions below correctly about your ideal customer.  What is their sex (Male or female)  Their relationship status (single, married, engaged)  Educational level (post-graduate, graduate, high school)  Age range (E.g 25-34)  What are they interested in  The industry in which they work  The kinds of device they use.

 Their fears and aspirations When we get to the practical aspect, I will show you how to know your customer avatar using a powerful Facebook tool. For now, let’s concentrate on getting hold of the basics.

The Three Types Of Audience Targeting On Facebook  Cold audience targeting  Warm audience targeting  Hot audience targeting

We will be discussing each of these targeting options subsequently but for this course, I will be dwelling more on the cold and warm audience targeting. I will touch a little on the hot audience targeting but would talk extensively about it in the Facebook Marketing Genius 3.0 video course.

Cold Audience Targeting A cold audience is someone who doesn’t know, trust or care about what you do. Since you are in business to make money, you have to find a way to make this people know, trust and care about you. This is something you can achieve with Facebook advertising

For Google ads, you target people using keywords. For example, if someone wants to lose weight, they can simple go to google and type “How to lose weight” The first 2 or 3 results displayed might be an advert and these advertisers targeted the keyword “how to lose weight” People type keywords into google because they are looking for a solution. People come into facebook 99.9% of the time to socialize, to see what’s going on with friends, family, colleagues etc. They don’t come to Facebook most times because they want a particular solution. So with facebook advertising, we actually have to interrupt them from their initial intentions. That is why we target people when doing Facebook advertising based on what they are interested in. For example, if I want to target someone who is looking lose weight, I can target certain types of slimming teas or products because I am dead sure that my audience must have liked a page like that. If I want to target business owners or aspiring business owners, I can target someone like Aliko Dangote because I’m sure they’ll be interested in him as a business mogul they look up to.

The concept of Broad and Narrow Interest Targeting You can target people through broad interest targeting or narrow interest targeting. Your journey to a successful Facebook Advertising lies in these 2 types of targeting. This is where a lot of people get it wrong with Facebook advertising. That is why I hear people complain that they put up an advert and no one is clicking to their website instead they like the ad. What do these concepts mean?

Broad Interest Targeting Facebook has certain categories that are classified as broad categories. For example, Business and industry, Entertainment etc It covers people who facebook thinks might be interested in your business but actually aren’t interested. They usually contain those we called “interest by association”

For example, if I share a post about my weight loss journey and a skinny friend of mine likes that post. Facebook automatically thinks that the person is interested in weight loss and adds them to the broad category. That is why targeting broad category is a bad idea. You might be reaching those who are not interested in your business. And you know what that means? Bad market. When people cry foul about their adverts not working, most of the time they targeted broad interest audience.

Narrow interest targeting These are the type of interest you should be targeting in your adverts. Facebook recognizes these interests based on the pages that people actually like. For example if I intend to target people who want to lose weight, instead of targeting a term like “weight loss” which is broad interest, I would target a particular brand of slimming tea. Unlike the broad interest, the narrow interest takes the guess work off facebook. You are sure that your advert would show to people who like the facebook fan page of that particular brand of slimming tea.

How to find your audience narrow interest There are 4 methods I currently use in finding the narrow interest of my audience for my facebook advert.  The audience insights method  Fan page suggestions  Ad manager suggestions  Google search

The audience insights method The audience insights is a great facebook tool every marketer should be using. You can use the audience insights to get the narrow interest of those you want to reach with your advert. To get started with this method: Visit this link https://web.facebook.com/ads/audience-insights/ From the pop up that appears choose “Everyone on Facebook”

Location by default will be United States, cancel it and input Nigeria as your location. In the interest box, insert your broad interest. For example, weight loss. Look at the tabs at the top of the page: Demographics, page likes, location, activities, etc. At this point we aren’t concerned about the other tabs, what you are looking out for is the “page likes” tab. Click on that. After doing that, scroll down until you see a page like below

Now get out your notepad, it’s time to write Take a close look at the image above, you can see the spot circled in red.

The affinity tab is what we are interested in What does this mean? Affinity means the number of times the fans of a particular page are likely to be interested in your subject. Looking at the image above Fans of the page “Young Entrepreneur” are 30 times likely to be interested in the subject “small business” Affinity of 10x and are above are usually good enough. Get out your notepad and copy all the fan pages you find here with an affinity 10x and above. These can turn out to be great narrow interest for your advert.

The fan page suggestion method When you like a particular fan page, it will bring other fan pages as suggestions. The suggestions can be very good narrow interest for my facebook advert See the image below.

I liked Tony Robbins’ page and it brought out other pages that are closely related to that page. These other pages are really good narrow interest. Copy them into your notepad, they’ll come in handy when we are running our ads.

Ad manager suggestions You go into the facebook ad manager and check for suggestion. See the images below

In the interest box, I typed in “Tony Robbins” then clicked on suggestions. Facebook automatically gives me interests related to Tony Robbins. Wipe out your notepad once again and type in these suggestions into it.

Google search method We can also get narrow interest from Google search. Here is how you do this: You type in your niche plus certain keywords into Google search engine. Here are some keywords you can use: Niche + Association Niche + Brands/Products Niche + Magazines/Blogs Niche + Website Niche + Public Figure Niche + Expert Niche + Forum

See the example below to understand it better

I used weight loss as my niche here and added the plus sign then typed product. Copy out the product name you find here into your notepad. You can do the same for other keyword to find really narrow interest.

Warm Audience Targeting The audience here already know you in some way; they’ve seen what you are capable of but don’t trust you yet. Your job is to make them trust you and get them to give you their undivided attention.

This is a cool strategy when you intend to build a list Here is how a warm audience strategy looks like Facebook Ad Blog/Article Thank You Page Facebook Ad Retargeting Landing Page Thank you page. Instead of sending people from your facebook ad straight to your landing page/squeeze page, you first send them to maybe your blog to read an article. In the blog, you have what we call a facebook pixel installed. The pixel is a small code that allows us track people who visit our website so that we can retarget them at a future date if we so wish. Have you ever had an advert that followed you everywhere you went online? That is a pixel at work. It is possible that some people will read your blog and still optin to your email list but some won’t. Your job is to retarget the people that don’t optin. These guys already know you because they read your blog article and they are already warmed up to you, so they are more likely to sign up to your email list. Later in the practical aspect, I will show you how to install a pixel on your blog to turn cold audiences to warm audiences.

Hot Audience Targeting This is where you should strive to be. Hot audiences take action the most and very fast. The hot audience are in 2 categories.  Those who already know and trust you.  Those who don’t know you but are desperately in need of what you have to offer. Those who already know and trust you They are those who have probably known you for a while now. They have gotten so much value from you so they naturally see you as the solution to their problems. These set of people can be those who are on your email list. When you have a product to sell, you can download your email list and upload on Facebook, then give facebook that command to only advertise to these people.

Those who don’t know you but are desperately in need of what you have to offer. You can target certain hot audiences on Facebook. These guys don’t know you but are desperately in need of your product. This is the hottest part of Facebook advertising because you don’t have to wait for them to begin to like and trust you before they buy from you.

I talked extensively on this in the Facebook Marketing Genius 3.0 video course. In this video course I showed you step by step on how you can begin to target people who are extremely interested in your business using facebook ads. Make sure you don’t miss the train with the 3.0 course

How To Choose The Right Objective For Your Business

The advert objective you choose depends on the goal you want to achieve. There are three objective categories on facebook. The awareness objective The consideration objective The conversion objective

Brand awareness- making your brand visible. Reach objective- the same with brand awareness. Traffic objective- you want people to click your link and visit your website or blog. Good objective for bloggers and those who want to build their email list. Engagement objective- you want people to engage with your advert; comment on your ad, like and share. This type of post is best for growing your messenger bot list. You can also use this for page likes App installs- when you want people to install your mobile app, you use this objective. Video views- You are charged here when someone views your video. This objective is best for mini importers or physical product sellers. Lead generation- as the name implies, mainly for people who want to collect emails directly from the facebook timeline. Conversion- you get to pay facebook when your audience gets to your page and take a particular action. For example, you send people to your landing page but you don’t pay until they sign up to your list. Before you go for the conversion objective, first use the traffic objective to be sure that people are actually getting to your email list before switching to conversion.

Live Practical Based on all we have said earlier, it is now time to actually practice all we have been learning. In this section, I will show you how you can begin to practically run ads on Facebook. This is the point where we put all we have learnt so far into practice. How to get your audience avatar You visit audience insights like we did earlier https://web.facebook.com/ads/audience-insights/ Click “everyone on facebook” Change the country to Nigeria Then input your interest. In the image below I inserted small business in the box provided

We are looking at the Demographics tab Age and Gender From the above we can see that 68% of men are interested in my niche. The sex of my niche is men. Men who are 18-24 are more interested in this topic with 38% but these set of people might still be students who depend on their parents. 33% of men in the 25-34 age bracket are interested in this niche. That means I will be targeting those who are 25-34. Relationship Status and Educational Level

Relationship status: 60% are single people. That means my audience are single people. Educational Level: 68% attended college which means they are graduates. If you go further down you will see their job titles but is not really important for running our ads.

We already did for page likes earlier in this e-book so we’ll just go for the next tab “location” The Location Tab Where do our audience live?

Click on the spot marked in red to show you from the highest to lowest. From the image, we can see that 43% of our audience live in Lagos and the rest are scantily scattered to other parts. So the location of our audience is Lagos.

The Activity tab The only thing I am concerned about here is the device they use

80% of our audience use mobile phones to access Facebook. So in our advert, we are only going to be targeting mobile users. Let’s drive into how we can create our adverts. At this point, we have done the major work which is doing a proper customer avatar and choosing the right narrow interest. So it’s time to rock our Facebook advert.

How to create a powerful advert on Facebook The very first thing you need to do is to go to the facebook advert platform. Click here: https://web.facebook.com/ads/manager/ When you click that link, the page below would appear

If you have advertised on Facebook before, you click on your objective and then proceed. But if this is the first time you are advertising on Facebook, you will be required to set up your ad account. Follow the steps below From the image above, I will click on the engagement objective. A page like the one below will come up.

Then you click on set up ad account. A page like the one below will appear

Country- Make sure it’s Nigeria Currency- I always love to use dollar because it is post-paid. If you choose naira then it’s pre-paid. That means, with naira, you pay first before you can run your ads

When that is done click on continue, you will be directed to the advert platform.

It is time to take away all the guess work
