A Message from the President

‘Fall’ in love with your Skokie Park District

If you are new to Skokie, one of the great privileges of living in this wonderfully diverse village is your access to some of Chicagoland’s best classes, special events and facilities. With contemporary facilities housing the arts, fitness, senior programs, nature, golf, skating, pools, a heritage museum, the children’s Exploritorium, rowing, childcare and more — as well as 44 beautiful outdoor parks — autumn is a great time to explore the many amazing offerings throughout the Skokie Park District. The season opens August 28-30 at Skokie’s Backlot Bash, your downtown, three-day street festival. This year’s Bash features The Psychedelic Furs, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Tributosaurus as ‘The Cars,’ and 12 supporting acts. The Bash also includes a 5K run, carnival rides, classic films as a tribute to Skokie’s silent film heritage, a Sunday Rotary pancake breakfast, a classic auto show, bingo tent, sponsor fair — and of course, plenty of food and beer.

In September, check out the Oakton Flea Market or any number of family-oriented special events. In October, the district’s critically-acclaimed senior acting troupe, Still Acting Up, will present an original musical performance entitled “Hi-Tech!” Throughout the month, the entire family can also enjoy several unique Halloween events, including the district’s Scream Scene. In November, Devonshire Playhouse will feature “Jesus Christ Superstar,” nominated for eight Tony Awards over its 40 year Broadway run.

Through it all, in addition to the above special events, residents will continue to swim, hike, celebrate birthdays, pursue the arts, play in sports leagues, and enroll their children in early childcare and preschool programs. So rekindle your romance with the Skokie Park District — by visiting one, ten or all — of the district’s 60 marvelous destinations, either in person or online at www.SkokieParks.org. Have a wonderful fall!

Mike Reid, President, Board of Commissioners
