Through history and throughout the world, wine has played a very important role in diplomatic missions. This is why we at the BASF wine cellar take especially great pleasure in supplying our colleagues and friends around the world with our wines. Our commitment to quality obliges us to select wines of a consistently high standard. We carefully selected wines for our colleagues in the United States and hope you will enjoy the selection in this offer as much as we have enjoyed choosing them. An example of our fantastic new selection is the dry Riesling BASF Exklusiv from the top quality estate of Georg Mosbacher in the renowned wine village Forst on the German Wine Road. You will also find a new Pinot Noir BASF Exklusiv from the region Pfalz from Martin and Georg Fusser. In 2006 the brothers were studying oenology (the study of winemaking) together at the renowned Geisenheim University, when they made the decision to start their own business. One year later they started to vinify their first wines – with success as you will taste in this wine! “Being a good winemaker is not about doing a lot of things. It is about making the right decision at the right time”, says young winemaker Christian Nett. He is one of the rising stars in the Palatinate winegrowing area and so we are happy to present our exclusive red wine “Sehr Nett” - a blend of five powerful red grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Mitos, Cabernet Cubin, Merlot and Lagrein. Translated to English “Sehr Nett” means “Very Nice” – we hope you like this “Nett” wine as much as we do!

Pfalz It was indeed the Mediterranean landscape, mild climate and warm, well-drained soils, where figs and lemons flourish, fruit trees abound, and tobacco, chestnuts, walnuts and almonds are harvested, that convinced the Romans to build so many villas in the Pfalz. Each mansion had of course its own winepressing hall. During the reign of Charlemagne over the “Holy Roman Empire” the Pfalz was his wine cellar, supplying not only the emperor’s table wines as well as the coronation wine. As one moves south along the “German Wine Route” through this veritable Garden of Eden, the number of castles increases and the landscape becomes more rugged and diverse. The region has always been considered the vegetable and fruit belt of Germany, which besides the influence of neighboring France, has led to its being the culinary capital of the country. There are various Michelin and Gault Millau rated restaurants and many other exciting surprises waiting for the tourists to discover. The Riesling grape predominates in some parts of the Pfalz, producing very big and powerful wines with flowery overtones. These wines often have a dry finish and are decidedly preferred by local restaurateurs, who serve them to great advantage with modern German cuisine. In other parts of the Pfalz, the clasical Burgundy family of grape varieties has been planted with great success. At the present time many younger wine-growers are focusing on the production of remarkably fruity Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) red wines. Dessert wines with great depth of character and nuances of exotic fruits are also characteristic of the Pfalz.

The little town of Kallstadt is situated in the winegrowing region Pfalz in Germany, on the German Wine Route. Despite having one of the most modern set-ups in the region, the Kallstadt Cooperative remains true to its traditions, with a history dating back to 1902. Traditional craftsmanship together with innovative development characterizes the wines, which carry the insignia of the lion of Kallstadt. The soil of the vineyard site Kallstadter Steinacker is characterized by chalk and sandstone, yielding grapes that produce a fresh and crispy Riesling wine with aromas of green apples, citrus and some hints of white blossoms. Are you a fan of Asian food? Then this off-dry Riesling will be a good choice for you! Low levels of alcohol and a hint of residual sugar make this wine a perfect partner for the delicate flavors and spiciness of the Asian cuisine. It is produced by the small family-winery Kimich in the beautiful wine-village of Deidesheim, located at the heart of the Palatinate wine-growing region. It is generally agreed by all wine experts that the vineyards surrounding Deidesheim have some of the best Riesling-terroirs worldwide! This wine shows aromas of ripe fruit like sweet apricot, peach and red apple. You can also smell a hint of honey. In the mouth there is some sweetness, which is nicely balanced by a refreshing acidity.

How does it taste when the German grape Riesling is vinified at a Palatinate estate by a Japanese enologist? If you want to experience this intercultural exchange you should try this wine! It comes from the well-known wine-village of Deidesheim, where the winery Josef Biffar was founded in 1734. Since 2013 the estate with its beautiful buildings, has been in the care of Fumiko Tokuoka. Starting her career in wine research at renowned Geisenheim University, she has worked as an enologist for several German wineries for over two decades. At Deidesheim, she not only produces her own wines now, but also brings the culture of her native country to the region by opening the high end Japanese restaurant Fumi on location at the winery. Peach, apricot, citrus – these are the typical Riesling aromas you will find in this elegant wine. Its fruity character, soft residual sugar and fresh acidity make it a perfect partner to all light dishes such as fish or fresh vegetables. “Each wine and each vintage has its own personality, its own character and its own history.” The winery is located in the idyllically Mediterranean wine hamlet called Duttweiler, which is in the heart of the winegrowing region of Pfalz. The winery was founded in 1838 and today the 5th generation of the Nett family is continuing the tradition of wine production. The philosophy of the Nett family is to work with respect to nature. The biggest challenge is to emphasize the potential and individuality of each vineyard in the estate. In their wine cellars, where tradition meets innovation in a harmonious and deliberate way, there is a sense of tranquility. Of providing the wines the luxury of time. Christian Nett was awarded recognition as “the best young winemaker in Germany” in 2015 from the German Agricultural Association (DLG). This Chardonnay presents a nose of ripe yellow fruit aroma with a hint of pineapple at the finish. The palate is characterized by pear and apple very juicy and creamy with a well balanced acidity.

Let the sunshine in! The name of this Riesling Sonnentropfen literally means drop of sun. It comes from the sun-kissed, warm vineyards of the Palatinate wine-growing region, one of the warmest parts of Germany. Here, around the town of Bad Dürkheim, the traditional winery Karl Schaefer grows it’s Riesling-grapes in old, terraced vineyards, which are based on sandstone-walls. These terraces work like a natural heater for the grapes, they store and reflect the heat of the day and make this wine a real Sonnentropfen! The Sonnentropfen is a typical Palatinate Riesling, with a clear, pale lemon color and a nose of ripe citrus-aromas, fresh green apple and peaches. You can almost smell the sun! The wine is dry with a mouth-watering acidity – pair it with fresh salad or seafood and you will have a perfect sunny day!

Winery Georg Mosbacher is one of the oldest and most well known wineries of the renowned wine village Forst and is known for high-quality wines since it’s foundation in 1920. Still in the family, the estate is today managed by Sabine Mosbacher-Duringer and her husband. This 2015 Riesling was produced from a single vineyard called “Wachenheimer Altenburg”, which is located in the village of Wachenheim, a neighbor to Forst – a beautiful place to go for a leisurely stroll. Did you know that Germany is the largest producer of Pinot Blanc wines worldwide? The varietal originated in France, where it was first discovered as a natural mutation of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris grapes. Under the synonym Weißer Burgunder it is now trendy in Germany because of its delicate aromas and pleasant acidity. This wine was produced by the winery Wilhelmshof, located at the village of Siebeldingen at the southern part of the Palatinate region. Known for reliable quality this winery has been awarded the title of “Best German Winery of the Year” several times. Grown on the south-facing slopes of a single vineyard called “Im Sonnenschein” – literally translated in the sun – this Pinot Blanc displays aromas of pear, apple and ripe peach. It has a crisp acidity but is still full bodied with a long finish.

An anecdote says that the famous German statesman Otto von Bismarck thoroughly enjoyed the wine from the Ungeheuer vineyards. The name Ungeheuger translates into English to a very big monster. Bismarck is reported to have said, “This monster tastes monstrously good”. Due to their location in the middle of a slope, the Ungeheuer vineyards are sheltered from winds and thus the grapes can ripen extremely well. The vines here usually flower earlier than those in other vineyard sites.

Martin and Georg Fusser have the great fortune to work in one of the most highly valued places for winegrowing on this planet, the vineyards surrounding the little town of Deidesheim. In 2006 the brothers were studying oenology together at the renowned Geisenheim University, when they made the decision to start their own business. Up to that point their parents had only been growing grapes and selling them to the local cooperative. But the young winemakers wanted to see their own name on the bottle and so they started to successfully vinify their first wines in 2007, with delicious results!

Ever since the estate was founded in 1849, von Winning has been dedicated to producing unique wines reflecting the vineyards in Ruppertsberg, Deidesheim, and Forst. The winery, which until 2007 was known as Dr. Deinhard, is located in Deidesheim, on the German Wine Route. With numerous awards, von Winning is today regarded as one of the top wineries of the Pfalz region and Germany.

BASF Wine Cellar

Rheingau On its northerly flow from Basel, Switzerland to Rotterdam, Netherlands the Rhine is forced by local geology to make a bend westwards for 30 km (18.6 miles), from the city of Wiesbaden to the village of Lorschhausen. By doing so, the river has created the most perfect conditions for the vineyards of the Rheingau, well recognized by the Romans and the Cistercian monks who spread the culture of the vine to this enclave of Riesling viticulture. The best vineyards are on steep terraced slopes facing due south, protected from the north wind by the heavily forested Taunus hills, and from the east and west winds by the bends in the river. The Rhine, which is at its widest here, provides warmth to the vines by reflection during the day and by radiating back its stored warmth at night. Rheingau Rieslings have the customary virtues associated with German wines: fine balance, exquisitely defined fruit flavors, and stimulating acidity. They have more alcohol and fullness than those of the Mosel, but less than those of the Pfalz. Their unique quality is, however, their earthy character and herbaceous flavors. Rheingau wines have been imported into the United States since the days of Thomas Jefferson. During his term as ambassador to France Jefferson had several hundred bottles prepared for his personal cellar and shipped back to Virginia.

The barons of Langwerth von Simmern have dedicated their efforts to fine Rheingau wines since 1464. It is one of the oldest wineries located in the winegrowing region Rheingau. In past centuries, a director was appointed to run the estate, but now for the first time in the estate´s long history, baron Georg and his wife, baroness Andrea von Simmern manage the estate themselves. The grape variety Riesling sets the tone, accounting for 98 percent of all plantings.

Bearing the name of the famed German writer of Western novels, Karl May, there’s only one possible choice for what to call their business: Blood Brothers. Like the main characters of the novels Winetou and Old Shatterhand the two brothers of May family lead the Karl May estate as a perfect team. As a tribute to their namesake, this exceptional wine has been dubbed The Blutsbruder, which translates in English to Blood Brothers. Not only does the name Karl May embody the romanticism of the Wild West, it also represents first class wines grown by the 7th generation of winemakers from this estate in the Wonnegau, which is at the southernmost part of the Rheinhessen. The ‘Blutsbruder’ wine is a dark ruby colored cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Cubin and the German varietal Dornfelder. It has complex aromas of cherry, cassis, plum, and blackberry, with fine notes of cacao and hints of spiciness. 27-year-old Stefan Müller is a young talent and has just been awarded the best young winemaker of Saar! Together with his girlfriend Johanna, an educated Sommelière, he is cultivating 9 hectares (22 acres) of vines on the steep slate-slopes of the Saar Valley, producing Riesling-wines of different styles from dry to lusciously sweet. This 2015 Riesling Kabinett is perfectly in-between. It shows a sweetness in the mouth, which is balanced by a mouthwatering acidity. The aromas are fresh and reminiscent of apricot, intense lemon and orange zest and comes together with the typical mineral notes of this region, which might remind you of wet slate-stones. This wine was produced from a single vineyard named Niedermenninger Sonnenberg, which translates to sunny mountain. Perfect food pairings for this Rielsing are fresh Sashimi or spicy dishes, like a hot Thai curry.

The winery sits on the grounds of a 17th century priory and the owners, the Despujol family live on site, amongst some of the splendid original buildings. The wine is produced from Merlot grapes, with a small portion of the wine aged in new oak. A fine red-purple color with aromas of cooked red fruits and is quite spicy as is typical of Merlot, with a hint of cardamom, cloves and cinnamon. Try this wine with roast beef or a standing rib roast, carrots and fennel vegetables and mashed potatoes, or as a unique accompaniment to veggie burgers.

Grenache, The ancient village Cairanne is located in Syrah, southern Rhone, next door to the famous villages Mourvèdre Chateauneuf-Du-Pape and Gigondas. The Perrin Family is well known among Rhone wine enthusiasts for their Château de Beaucastel, but their Southern Rhone wines under the label Perrin et Fils is getting increasing attention. The family’s 14 hectare Cairanne vineyard is located south west of the village and the soils are stony, made of clay and sand. A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdr, this is dense wine with beautiful aromas of cassis, Mediterranean herbs, with a hint of licorice. The winery makes wine under the denomination ‘Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja’. Accredited in 1926, they obtained the highest category, “Calificada” in 1991. This Reserva is a blend of the Tempranillo grape, aged in barrels of French and American oak. The grapes for this wine are harvested from a single vineyard, specifically selected for our BASF Excklusiv and is a very limited production. We are sure you will love this Rioja-style wine’s smooth tannins, low acidity and complex aromas of red berries, with a well integrated toasty notes from the barrel aging.

Tempranillo, Bodegas Comenge, founded in 1999, is located Cabernet in the village Curiel de Duero in the northern Sauvignon Spanish region of Ribera del Duero. The winery A-Mano is located near Taranto in the heart of the Primitivo of the Puglia region. It is managed by the American winemaker Mark Shannon and his Italian partner Elvezia Sbalchiero. Mark is a graduate of the wine making program at UC Davis and has traveled the world as a flying wine maker before settling down at A-Mano. Together, Mark and Elvezia, developed the winery to become one of the most dynamic and exciting wineries in the south of Italy. Only the best grapes are used for the production of their wines. What is unique about this wine is that it is produced in a manner similar to Amarone wine. The grapes are dried for 5 months before vinification, concentrating the aromas of the wine.

The winery Fattoria Nittardi is located in the Marrema district in the heart of Tuscany. In the 16th century, the property was owned by the famous artist Michelangelo Buonarroti. The fine wines of the Wilhelmshof family wine estate have for many years been praised by experts and consumers alike. Among their most distinguished acclaim, is the German National Wine association award for producing the “Best Sparkling Wine of Germany” and for having the “Best White Wine Collection”. Grapes have been grown at the Wilhelmshof estate since at least the 1600’s. The current owner Herbert Roth took over the estate in 1975. Unable to find a good sparkling wine on the market, he began a limited production of 52 bottles of Sekt – “One for every Sunday”. As its reputation and popularity grew, so too did demand. Today Wilhelmshof produces more than 40,000 bottles of bubbly each year. The sparkling wine from Wilhelmshof is produced only through classical traditional bottle fermentation. Fermented in the bottle for 15 months with yeast, to produce finer bubbles for more aromatic and expressive taste. A fine elegant sparkling wine made from red Pinot Noir grapes of extraordinary quality. Look for aromas of pear and quince and a creamy texture from the delicate bubbles.
