Data Migration | in detail
Dates: Monday–Wednesday, Aug 22–24, 2016 Everything returns to normal Thursday, Aug 25 at 9 AM. What is data migration? Think of it like moving fish from an old tank to a new one. Lawrence Public Library (LPL) needs a new database to keep track of records. To do this, we need to move information from the old system to a new one. Why is LPL changing its computer system? Our current product is slated to be phased out and updates will no longer be possible—time to upgrade! Will LPL close? No. We’ll be open regular hours. We won’t be able to do everything, but we can do some basic things. We’re calling this “LPL Lite”!
LPL Lite What is LPL Lite? LPL Lite is basic library service and building access that we’re offering during database migration from Aug 22 –24. You’ll have: ● Free WiFi and internet ● Holds pickup ● A safe space for teens to hang out ● Building access limited to Main Lobby, Auditorium, and Teen Zone ● Public restrooms + air conditioning Will the website be available during LPL Lite? Yes. However, you won’t be able to use some of our online resources or catalog because both rely on the database to function. Can I book a meeting/study room or the Auditorium during LPL Lite? No. The library will only be partially open, so additional space for study and events will be unavailable. Groups with prior reservations will carry over. New reservations resume Thursday, Aug 25.
Checkout + Returns Can I check stuff out during LPL Lite? Unfortunately, no. So, mark your calendar: You have until 6 PM Sunday, Aug 21 to check out books, DVDs, CDs and other materials. Can I check out digital materials? No. These will be unavailable during the migration. How will LPL Lite affect my due dates? We’ve tweaked things so that no items will be due and no fines will accrue. Can I return materials to the library during migration? Yes. Return items to: ● Library Lobby ● Library drivethrough book drop (access via Kentucky St.) ● HyVee drop box — 6th & Monterey
● HyVee drop box — 23rd & Kasold ● Checkers drop box — 23rd & Louisiana
Your Account Will my fines and checkout info be preserved during migration? Yes. Your fines, holds, and all of your checkout data will transfer from the old system to the new one. What changes will I notice? Very few. The biggest difference will be how you pay fines online. We’re trying to make this a smooth transition. Your PIN will automatically change, too. Do I need a new library card? No. However, you will automatically have a new PIN. Hey—My PIN doesn’t work! Your PIN has automatically change to an 8digit number. ● Your new PIN will be your birthday in this format: MMDDYYYY ● If we don’t have your birthday on file, your new PIN will be: 12311999 ● Tip—You can customize your PIN after the migration.
Your Holds How will LPL Lite affect my holds? You can pick up holds at the Library during LPL Lite. If you don’t, you have time: they won’t expire until Aug 29. Will my holds list be preserved? Yes! It will definitely move to the new database. Will my personal lists and reading history be preserved? Yes! When you log into your account on Thursday, Aug 25 you’ll have access to that information.
Volunteers I’m a Friends volunteer—can I still get to the Friends work space? Yes. Connect with LPL staff and we’ll get you downstairs. I’m a Library volunteer—do I work my regular hours? Thank you, but no. Take a welldeserved break!
