24 GAME COMPETITION RESULTS IN A FOUR-PEAT The 9th Annual 24 Game Tournament boasted over 200 students competing in a fast-paced math competition at Fauquier High School in late February. Teams from all 16 elementary and middle schools gathered with the goal of being the best at calculating numbers to equal 24. Thompson Elementary School and Marshall Middle School were named overall school winners. The elementary junior champion was Maggie Gardner, while Jake Stern led the way in the elementary challenge division. The middle school champion title went to Colin Doyle, who is no stranger to winning this competition. Not one, not two, not three, but four is the number of consecutive years Marshall Middle’s 8th-grader, Colin Doyle, has left the competition as a champion. What’s the secret to his success? A teacher. “I had a great coach at C. Hunter Ritchie. Mrs. Leach got me started with 24 and always made it fun and challenging. She was even helpful after I went to Marshall Middle by allowing me to help her coach her students at Ritchie, including my little sister Mairin,” Doyle said. As Doyle moves onto high school, he will no longer be eligible to compete in this competition, but he sees the long-lasting value of his 24 experience. “24 was great for the competition, but it has also been a huge help with my math classes - it has helped me make calculations faster and showed me multiple ways to solve the same problem,” he added.
