Katie Neece Surreal Painter JANUARY

Katie's paintings aspire to create a place for the viewer that is beyond or outside reality, a type of magic realism. Surrealism and painters of the Dutch Golden Age have been great influences on my work. My vision focuses on the metaphysical; a dialogue of instability, solemnity, and mysticism incorporated in a thoughtful, concise manner. The content of my work utilizes organic elements such as birds and insects, feathers, bubbles, string and human body parts. These elements are juxtaposed with threatening imagery such as crucifixion nails. The subjects are usually placed in dark foreboding, ethereal environments, bringing these images out of the real world and into their own mystical environments. The allegorical aspect of symbolism in my work is important to me: being raised as an only child, isolation and solitude are some significant elements of my identity that I continue to explore in my work.

I

As the holidays approach and that wonderful time of gift giving draws near, you may be worried, wondering what on earth you can buy this year. Don't fret any longer. We're pulling together the best artisans, makers and artists from the local area to give you a handmade holiday show that is worth going to. From the same team that brought you REBEL ART FEST comes the Urban Artisan Market. This event will take place at the J.C. Lauber Building, former sheet metal factory turned into an inviting event space. The J.C. Lauber is on Lasalle and Niles near downtown South Bend, right next to Macris. Friday, December 2nd will be a preview night to coincide with First Fridays. We'll have half of our makers set up, a coffee bar, Ragamuffin baked goods and more. Then Saturday, December 3 from 10-4 is the main event, with nearly 20 local artisans, live music, food and drinks.

MAKESOUTHBEND.COM

And as with any event we do as MAKE SOUTH BEND, there will be some DIY projects you can make and take, along with a gift wrapping station, complete with custom stamps. While most holiday shopping is rushed and in crowed big box stores, the Urban Artisan Market lets you get back to a simpler time where people actually made things by hand, good quality things, and were proud of their work. This will be a holiday shopping experience you'll treasure. Our curated show will ensure you are wowed by the craftsmanship you see, and that you can find those perfect holiday gifts for everyone on your list. So grab a hot drink while you are there, take a break in our sitting area and enjoy the live music, and leave with peace of mind that your gifts for the holidays are local and handmade.

Join us for 3rd THURSDAYS at MAKE SOUTH BEND

At MAKE SOUTH BEND, we strive to help artists and makers do more of what they love and bring their work to the community through events like our Makers Market. Each month, we invite different makers who fit that month's theme to set up and sell their work. These events are free and open to the public to shop, meet the makers and try a free DIY project. You'll see a new group of six to twelve artists, makers and craftsmen at each market. Put it on your calendar and then come out to support your local makers.
