February 2018 Introduction and News from our CEO, Julie Pal What a tumultuous month February has been for UK charities. Every day there seems to be further revelations about large UK charities with international portfolios and global presence who appear to have misplaced their moral compass and as a result have lost the public’s trust in charities. It was distressing to hear that 7,000 individual donors had withdrawn their subscriptions from Oxfam – but heartbreaking to realise that many of those donors would not choose to support their local charities instead. So, we need to improve our transparency and remind potential donors, sponsors and benefactors that as local, small charities we should not be tarred with the same brush. Therefore, we at CommUNITY Barnet would urge all of you to turn the scandals of international charities into opportunities to strengthen your own charities, community organisations and social enterprises by taking time to check on the following: Safeguarding Check and update your safeguarding policy Review the DBS status of all your paid and unpaid staff Contact CommUNITY Barnet on how best to safeguard vulnerable people Whistleblowing Have a clear whistleblowing policy which includes a clear pathway to alerting trustees and senior managers https://mailchi.mp/communitybarnet/community-barnet-newsletter-february-2018

Staying Safe in the Cloud (Infographic) As the business landscape changes, more and more companies are exploring ways of enabling staff to work away from the office. Cloud computing allows workers to access company data and applications via the internet, anywhere and anytime. As a result, everyday tasks can be automated and performed on laptops, tablets or even smartphones. As a result in the UK, 88% of organisations are now using cloud services. With that number predicted to rise, it’s important companies identify ways to keep that data safe. Read more.
