FEBRUARY 2018

Gleneagles Country Club

DEAR MEMBERS, We want to wish you and your family a Happy and Healthy New Year. The Holiday Season at Gleneagles was packed full of activities for the entire family. This year the club experienced record attendance at many of the events. The All That Glitters New Year’s Eve Gala, New Year’s Eve Dinner in the Grille and Glen, and our first Dinner Show were all sold out. Recognizing this wonderful participation, we will do our best to accommodate our members in the future events.

Richard North board president

We thank you for choosing Gleneagles to celebrate the holidays with your family and friends. A big thank you to the staff for the fabulous job of keeping our member and guest services at the wonderful level that they have come to expect. Our Healthy Lifestyle initiative continues to gain traction among our members. Our Director of Healthy Lifestyle, Karen Mikus, and her staff offer a varied selection activities to help our members enjoy the club life to the fullest. As we write this article, the Healthy Lifestyle Center is nearing completion. We greatly appreciate your support and patience during the project. We anticipate the completion of the Healthy Lifestyle Center in mid-March. Prior to the opening, we will provide a steady flow of information on just how you and your guests will be able to utilize the facility to your maximum benefit.

FEBRUARY 2018

Committees are a very important part of Gleneagles Country Club. As such, we are making our best efforts to afford those members who desire to serve on a committee an opportunity to do so. On March 7 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm, we will host our inaugural Committee Fair. In attendance will be Board Members, Leadership Staff and Committee Members. Our goal at the Committee Fair is to educate the membership on the specifics of each Committee, answer any questions and entice members to become part of the Gleneagles Committee System. We encourage all members that have an interest to apply for a committee, and for those that may be ending their term on one committee to consider applying for another committee of interest. Committee application forms will be mailed to all members in early March and are to be returned to the club by March 16. Our Annual Membership Meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 27 at 8:00 pm in the Legends Dining Room. We will introduce the 2018 Board of Governors in addition to annual reports from the Club President, Richard North and the Club Treasurer, Don Kaplan. We hope you will attend this very important meeting. Round Table Breakfast meetings will continue through February to discuss the Healthy Lifestyle Facility, current club events and a Q & A session.

Respectfully yours,

Richard North, Board President Kraig Spina, General Manager

We were not sure how many families would join us this year for the holidays because of the construction at the main pool, but it was a huge success with record numbers and absolutely perfect weather. The season is going by at a rapid pace with Passover not that many weeks away, so hang on and get ready for an action-packed February.

JOE DeMINO, pga director of golf

A GREAT START Wow, we are off to a great start for 2018! From the weather to great events such as the Major tournaments for all of our league play, the lifestyle at the club just cannot be beat! Gleneagles is the best place to be in South Florida, and we are all looking forward to the new Healthy Lifestyle Center opening and additional programming that will surely enhance your golf game. Congratulations to all of our winners - it came right down to the end at many of the matches! Play for P.I.N.K. Men’s and Ladies’ events are always awesome – thank you all for the support. We are proud as a club for what the members do for this great cause. Stop by Demo Day on February 16 to see the new Taylor Made & Callaway products that just came out! Moving forward into the heart of the season, we want to make sure we continue to take good care of our golf courses and do our part as members to fill the divots, rake the traps, fix our ball marks, follow the cart signs. All these things will help us show off the beauty each day of what we have here at Gleneagles. Stop by in the golf shop to check out all the new products that are coming in weekly. Also, we will be happy to help you with any special orders that you need.

JUNIOR GOLF CLINICS FEBRUARY 20-22 • 2:30 - 3:30 pm Register in the Pro Shop

Welcome Jake! Please welcome Jake Gabel, our new Assistant Golf Professional!

Born and raised in South Florida, Jake has been playing golf since the early age of five. Jake was a three-sport letterman in high school playing golf, baseball, and lacrosse. As a high school student athlete he was a three-time all-county golfer and baseball player. Jake began his Professional career as the Assistant Golf Professional at Sherbrooke Country Club. He has worked at Boca West, Woodfield and most recently was the Golf Professional at Westchester Country Club in Boynton Beach before joining the Gleneagles team. He is very excited to share his passion and knowledge of the game with the members of Gleneagles. Jake is an avid fisherman and currently resides in Wellington with his significant other, Melanie.

TIP: WORK THE ARMS I have had a few students come to me discussing the sand wedge troubles, such as getting to hit the ball in the air with some loft and stop on the green better from different distances such as very short out to 40 yards. Having the club shaft stand taller and feeling the arms working in a back-andforward motion with less wrist movement in the swing will help get the ball higher and more spin. Feeling the right arm staying through the swing longer like throwing a ball underhand will help keep the face square to the target which helps hit it the right way. Any questions, stop in and let us show you how to hit this shot and build more confidence. Enjoy the rest of your season! – Joe

FABULOUS FEBRUARY! February is here and there is no shortage of great events to participate in at the Club. We have stacked this short month with many things to choose from and many ways to participate. You may have noticed that we have added many ways of advertising lately, but what you might have not seen is that with every advertisement, whether it is a flyer, on our new digital signage displays, on our website or through an email, or even in our monthly Eagle Newsletters, we also advertise how and when to reserve your spot for an event. Some events need a form to be filled out in its entirety and turned into the Concierge Desk, while others you can simply call in starting on a certain date. Please make yourself aware of all the ways we advertise as the staff makes sure to have everyone in the know of what is happening at the club. We sure don’t want anybody missing out on everything we have to offer here at the Club. From our Lunch and Lecture to our Variety Shows starting this month, you definitely do not want to miss out on these opportunities for culture and entertainment. Enjoy your February and as always, I look forward to seeing you having fun here at Gleneagles.

JEFF TERENTIEFF executive chef

The culinary department is excited for another action packed month here at Gleneagles! With the winter season still in full swing, all three dining venues continue to offer opportunity for us to improve the overall dining experience and make it a destination for your friends and families as well. We’ve once again updated all our dinner menus for the month of February, to continue to give you a variety of fresh menu options and to keep up to date with dining trends and seasonal ingredients. In keeping with the new healthy lifestyle culture, more light fare and vegetarian options are also available. On the 1st and 2nd, we introduce the Grille and Veranda menus, and follow up with the new Legends menu on February 7. This month offers a well balanced mix of Pub Nights, themed buffets, and more. My team’s personal favorite, the Chef’s Table, is on Saturday, February 24 and will be an incredible journey through the flavors of Spain. Seats go quickly so keep an eye on your calendar! We in the kitchen hope you had as much fun this past month as we did and can’t wait to do it again in February! As I always say, if ever you have a comment, concern, or request, please let any one of us know immediately. This includes special orders. Menus are always available in advance; if you can’t seem to find something you like, call a day or two in advance. This gives my staff ample time to do our best to honor most requests. We thank you again for all the continued support.

ENHANCE YOUR MEMORY WITH TAI CHI The most effective strategy for exercising to boost brain health is likely to be a combination of physical exercise with cognitive challenges. Studies combining the activities have demonstrated significant improvements in brain volume and improved cognition. Numerous studies have shown that dementia is associated with increasing shrinkage of the brain and nerve cells, and their connections are gradually lost. The ability to reverse this trend with physical exercise and increased mental activity implies that it may be able to delay the onset of dementia. While any exercise is good for the brain, adding cognitive challenges in a physically demanding context like Tai Chi is likely to have optimal impact on cognition. Tai Chi requires constantly planning, anticipating, adjusting and coordinating movements which keeps the brain fully engaged with the body. You get all the cognitive pieces you might get from meditation – mental clarity, focus, positive thoughts and lower stress – but you also get physical exercise. Our Tai Chi class on Thursday morning at 8:00 am on the Veranda will help get you started. Tai Chi is appropriate for people of all ages and fitness abilities. To begin with, don’t get stuck on perfectionism, your goal should be consistency and habit. If you are interested in Tai Chi and find the time unmanageable please send me an email at [email protected].

Please call 561-495-2806 or email [email protected] to register. Class Schedules subject to change. gleneagles.cc

FEBRUARY 2018

If you can’t find something to do on the Tennis and Pickleball courts in February, then you are not looking too hard. As one of the busiest months of the year, there is something for everyone. Fifteen league teams are in action and we invite everyone down to the courts to cheer on our players. Women’s Senior play on Monday, Men Seniors play on Thursday, Women 55 Love are on Friday, Grand Slam on Tuesday, Pickleball Champions on Monday and Social Pickleball on Wednesday. Watch in shaded comfort under the newly installed spectator canopies. Speaking of teams, Gleneagles teams had a great fall season finishing 1st in the Grand Slam, Open and 65+ league and the middle of the pack in Golden Girls Princess and Lady divisions. The 55 Love team is continuing play and we currently sit in 1st place. The Great White Way Dinner Dance, a tribute to Broadway is February 1. Cocktails, appetizers, salad and pre-determined entrees of either salmon, chicken or steak along with dessert and the entertainment of Michael Masci, all for $39.00+. Join all your tennis friends for this night of fun and entertainment. Former WTA World #1 with 17 Grand Slams, 2 Olympic Golds and a member of the Tennis Hall of Fame, Gigi Fernandez will be on Stadium court Friday February 2 at 2:00 pm to teach the Gigi method of club doubles to our members. Tim Snell, Tara Puc and former World #1 ITF Geoff Moore will be Gigi’s students. Refreshments provided. The Pickleball Pro organized Play Day is offered every Tuesday 3:00 – 4:00 pm. Come down to the courts and meet new people and enjoy a game of Pickleball. The Pickleball Club Championships are a one-day event February 3. Partners may be of the same or mixed gender in this competitive tournament to crown the club champion. Buds, Brews & Dinner is an afternoon of tennis and dinner for the men on February 7, and the Wilson Demo Day is February 10. Traditionally, the largest entry for a club championship is the Mixed Doubles Tournament scheduled for February 21, 24, 25. Register with a partner or ask us to help for this competitive flighted tournament. Refer to your Tennis Handbook for details on these and all the other activities offered in February.

Hitting long by a couple of inches in pursuit of a quality shot is a “better” error than bouncing a ball into the net. In fact, hitting the net is indeed the worst mistake of all. You have absolutely no chance of winning the point by hitting the net, while hitting it over has many opportunities to win the point, including the chance your opponents may hit an out ball. The problem with hitting the net is it can be chronic. Trying to make a shot too good, getting in to a poor height rhythm that will never force your opponent deep, or simply not evaluating the many balls that you are hitting in the net is a bad strategic recipe. The first step to correcting this “worst” mistake is the awareness that you are a chronic netter. Take a look at the number of balls in the net when a teaching Pro is having a hitting lesson with a member. It is rare to see more than a couple of balls in the net for the Pro. Pros abhor net balls. It is this awareness of net errors that lead strong players to wide errors and deep errors, but that is another article. – Mike

I also wanted to take this time to give a few of the stats from 2017. At the South Gate we had a total of 235,291 entries, and 349,797 through the Atlantic Road Gate. There were a total of 476 open garage doors checked; 170 Resident assists; 67 residents locked out of their homes; 251 EMS Responses and 1203 Bar Codes issued. This is just a small sample of the things that occurred here at Gleneagles last year. Let’s make sure they we stay alert as Spring arrives!

AT THE BRIDGE TABLE by marty tolep

Players rarely go to sleep in the bidding, seldom nod off when playing the hand, but quite often take a little nap on defense. Yet there is no phase of the game where it is more important to remain alert. This is the sort of thing that is always happening. See hand on the right. West led the ten of hearts to the six, queen and king. At trick two the declarer played a low spade, winning with dummy’ jack when West played low. Two more heart tricks and five club tricks quickly brought the declarer’s total up to nine tricks. This sequence of events should have been anticipated. From the play of the first trick West knows the declarer has three heart tricks and South’s failure to play on clubs is a strong indication that the suit is solid. It follows that declarer will make his contract if he is allowed to steal just one spade trick. An alert defender would therefore go straight up with the ace of spades and switch to diamonds as the only remaining chance. Any diamond will not do. West needs to find his partner with either A10x or A9xx in the suit, and the card that caters to both possibilities is the jack of diamonds. Whether declarer covers with dummy’s queen or not the defenders can run four diamond tricks to put the contract one down. Bottom Line: Don’t duck when this concedes the game going trick.
