What? No construction update? Oh my gosh, how many newsletters started out with an update about our building project. Remember when I would take pictures of dirt being moved and steel laying in piles, and everyone would get excited about the project? As of March 20, 2018, every resident has been moved into their single rooms. For those of you who have lived here long enough to see the transition, I hope you are impressed and happy with the results. For those of you who are new to Brookside, we are happy that you chose our nursing home and rehabilitation center for your stay. Please let someone know if there is anything that you need while you are with us. We have a new administrator! Meet Lynda Bogdala. Linda joined us on March 12, the day before the big move. We sure know how to break someone in to their new job don’t we. But Lynda fit right in with us and pitched in to help with whatever she could.

If you haven’t had a chance to meet Lynda, we will be having a welcome tea for all of you to come and meet and visit with her on April 5 at 2 PM in the Southport room. I know everyone will like Lynda. We made sure that we picked the right person to be the Administrator of Brookside. It is important that we found the best, and that we did.

Lynda Bogdala

And no, I am not retiring just yet. It is important to the County Executive Jim Kreuser to have a solid succession plan in place, so that when I do retire, Lynda will be fully prepared and ready to take the helm.

How about the Bistro! If you and or your family members haven’t had the opportunity to visit the Bistro for a cappuccino or a soup, salad or sandwich, please do so. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is fabulous.

Art Class If you enjoy art and are a current resident of Brookside, we have a treat for you! We will be starting a new Art Class in midApril on Sundays at 12:30pm in our Neighborhood Activity Space. We are excited to have Sonja Katt as our instructor.

Our next big project is getting Willowbrook Assisted Living occupied. We will be starting to accept applications for this area as soon as April. Contact the Business office for more information.

Abril The Son of Music

Mariachi music is an enduring musical tradition in Mexico, played wherever celebrations take place. There will certainly be plenty of mariachi music to enjoy at the Tuscson Mariachi Conference from April 25 to 28. Mariachi’s roots go back hundreds of years, to the arrival of Spanish Conquistador Hernán Cortés in Mexico in 1519. Indigenous music, played as part of a religious ceremony, was played with rattles, drums, flutes, and conch shells. The Spanish brought with them harps, guitars, violins, and brass horns, instruments that were played during Catholic mass but quickly became popular outside of church services. Natives created a new type of music, incorporating the new instruments with local musical styles and African musical influences that arrived via the slave trade. Many identify the west Mexican state of Jalisco as the center of this new folk music style known simply as son, or sound. It was from the son of Jalisco that modern mariachi developed. In the late 1800s and 1900s, the biggest form of entertainment was listening to radio and records. This is when the first modern mariachi bands formed. Violins and trumpets were added to musical orchestras featuring harps, guitars , and woodwinds. These bands became popular, and the music made its way into the rural countrysides. Mariachi was played at parties, on holidays, and in church, and the sound accompanied dances as varied as foxtrots, waltzes, pasodobles, fandangos, pokes, and jarabes. During the Mexican Revolution, many Spanish haciendas had to let workers go, including mariachi musicians. These mariachis wandered and played everywhere they could, and the new Mexican government, eager to promote a unified Mexican identity separate from their Spanish colonizers, presented mariachi as the national music for their young country. While Jalisco may be the “birthplace of mariachi,” the reach of this music is now global, with mariachi bands playing as far away as Sweden, Egypt, and Croatia.
