A MESSAGE ABOUT SCHOOL SAFETY Dear Parents and Staff, Since the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, some of you have reached out with concerns and questions about safety in our schools. We understand your concern and appreciate your questions. Please know that our highest priority is keeping our schools safe for students and staff. This has been an ongoing commitment since we became Pelham City Schools in 2014. Some of our key initiatives include: secured main entrances that require identification upon entry, armed school resource officers (SROs) at every school, police patrols of exterior areas of all schools, police presence at widely attended sporting events, upgrades to surveillance cameras at schools and on buses, Raptor Visitor Management System at all schools, emergency preparedness training (monthly drills/intruder training) and safety plans for each school, and a social worker who specifically works with students in need of mental and emotional health support. We work closely with the Pelham Police Department to protect our students and staff, and we meet regularly to discuss issues related to school and community safety. After the tragedy in Florida, myself, along with our school administrators and district personnel proactively met with Larry Palmer, Pelham Chief of Police, several members of the Pelham Police Department, and our school resource officers (SROs) to review current safety plans, best practices, and opportunities for enhanced training and improvements in the safety of our schools. Action steps were developed to evaluate our current practices and consider possible improvements. We are fully committed to looking at all details of school safety including the expectations, behavior, and procedures everyone must follow to keep our schools safe. Is there something you can do to help us? Yes. IF YOU SEE OR HEAR SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. You can help us by encouraging students to be aware of their surroundings, of the behavior of other students, of the presence of unaccompanied visitors on campus, and of anything else that makes them uncomfortable or seems unusual. Please encourage them to communicate with teachers, administrators, front office staff, counselors, school resource officers, or anyone else who works at the school when they see or hear something that doesn't seem quite right. Our schools will continue to reinforce this message to our students. Suspicious activity can also be reported confidentially by calling 205-670-6TIP (6847) or by submitting a form online at tips.Shelbyda.com.

Also, if you have specific concerns about a school or suggestions for improvement, please send an email to [email protected]. Thank you for working with us to keep our students and staff safe. We are stronger working together to protect our schools. Sincerely, Dr. Scott Coefield Superintendent Pelham City Schools
