Bluegrass Jam Do you play music, and enjoy learning and jamming with other musicians? Want to learn more about traditional and Bluegrass music?

The Southwest Virginia 4-H Center will be hosting a musical weekend for youth who play, or want to learn to play Bluegrass. Bring your guitar, banjo, mandolin, or bass for clinics, jam sessions, and a Sunday performance. All you need is an instrument and a basic playing ability. Clinics by local players will be offered in the following disciplines: Acoustic guitar Banjo Mandolin Bass If you play another instrument, feel free to bring it along for improvisational jam sessions! The Bluegrass Jam is open to any youth in the Southwest District, aged 9-13 (as of September 30, 2010). To register, just fill out the preregistration form on this page, and we’ll send you all the necessary forms. Registration costs $60 and includes all meals, lodging, snacks and activities.

Storytelling This weekend isn’t just for musicians either. If you don’t play an instrument, you will have the opportunity to learn about the traditional craft of storytelling. You’ll spend the weekend exploring how the art of telling stories has played a role in the history of Appalachia. You’ll also have the chance to learn traditional stories, new stories, and practice all the special skills for which great storytellers are known. In addition to storytelling, you’ll have the chance to sing with our musicians and learn bluegrass vocal tunes. Finally, you will participate in the Sunday performance as we weave stories, songs and music for an audience.
