Dear all, This year, as last, we hope to welcome our Patron Judith Weir Master of the Queen’s Music to one of the Festival events. The Committee have worked tirelessly throughout the year to put together a programme of music of all genres, art, photography and poetry which reflects the wealth of local talent and involves the many organisations in the town - Calne Choral Society, Calne Jazz Club, Calne Camera club and Calne Artist’s Group among others. The CODAs, free concerts beginning at 9.30pm after the main concert, continue to highlight local performers and are, for many, a relaxing end to the day. As well as tickets being available from the Box Office at Bank House, opposite the Town Hall, they can also be obtained online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/cmaf, as well as by phone on 0333 666 3366. Many thanks go to Chilvester Financial Planning who remain our main sponsor. Sponsorship has also come from other local companies for specific days or events. We are indeed most grateful to all of these for showing their commitment to promoting the Festival to the wider community and to recognising the local aspect of our ethos towards the Arts.

Welcome

A Welcome from the President

Our 2017 Festival opens with an exciting evening of traditional Sea Shanties with The Longest Johns (2) which is guaranteed to be full of folktales and maritime songs. If you have not heard this group, this is one event not to miss! Continuing our opening weekend Calne Choral Society (6) will perform Faure’s Requiem on Saturday evening. This year’s Sunday afternoon recital (7) will celebrate the music and work of Zoltán Kodály with local musicians and Sally Cathcart, who some of you may know through The Curious Piano Teacher and her work with the European Piano Teachers’ Association UK. Following on from last year’s inaugural children’s concert, we invite you to come along to two entertaining Saturday morning musical sessions with Nick Cope (4) and the Topaz Duo (20). Continuing with the traditions of our Festival, the next generation of musicians are well represented with performances by Marlborough College (8), The John Bentley School (9, 12, 18), the combined choirs of our local primary schools (15), St Mary’s School (16) and a pupil concert for local musicians (21). Not forgetting our weekday evenings which include Calne Jazz Club with The Royals from Bristol (11) and talented saxophonist Harry Smith (13), with CODAs by Saxophonics (14) and singer-songwriters Leo James (3) and Amy Walters (17). Our second weekend starts with Peter Grant and Michelle Sheridan-Grant (19) making a welcome return with a super evening of musical theatre. Saturday will be a night for G&S devotees, with Swindon’s Gilbert and Sullivan Society (22) entertaining us late into the evening. To conclude our Festival, we welcome the Midwest Big Band (24) for what promises to be a Finalé to remember! Simon Parker, Music Advisor

One of Kodály’s greatest legacies is his ideas and philosophy on music education and Sally Cathcart will bring the basic principles behind this approach to life in a short presentation through some practical activities - we will be singing, dancing and having lots of fun!

Poetry, songs, quips, quotes and local stories tell the tale of Samuel Taylor Coleridge in Calne, featuring the Wiltshire History Man, Nick Baxter, and songs performed by Michelle Sheridan-Grant... A leading figure of the Romantics, Coleridge lived in Calne at the time of Waterloo, and took a keen interest in local events while writing his meditative classic, Biographica Literaria. Accompanied by the ballads of Thomas Moore, the 19th century Irish bard, who lived and is buried in Bromham.

School

Voices of the young women of Calne. A thought provoking evening of drama, dance and music brought to you by students from The John Bentley School. Inspired by discussions about how they are viewed in the world and how they view others, six students have created a piece of theatre that explores individuality, stereotypes and society’s longing to label. The six students explore the ‘Hoodie’ culture, Islamophobia, young mothers, rape victims and girls persecuted for how they look. The piece is hard-hitting and thought provoking with an aim to question why any of us prejudge anyone. Interspersed with powerful songs and dances, by other young female performers from the school, This Woman’s Work gives our young women a chance to express their feelings and us a chance to hear them. This performance is suitable for aged 14 and over.
