UNCLE FUNK MONMOUTH FESTIVAL ENSEMBLE

Orchestra

The Monmouth Festival Ensemble - our ‘in-house’ music group - has built a reputation in recent years for quality and innovation, presenting beautiful music that is not often performed. The ensemble comprises professional musicians from the Monmouth area alongside students of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, directed by Chris Petrie. Tonight’s programme is inspired by the Parisian Belle Époque; a golden age of artistic excellence across the turn of the twentieth century. In 1879 the pre-eminent flautist Claude-Paul Taffanel founded the Société de Musique de Chambre pour Instruments à Vent (Society of Chamber Music for Wind Instruments) in Paris. He commissioned many composers of the period, including some that will be heard in this concert, such as Émile Bernard’s Divertissement and Andre Caplet’s Suite Persane (Persian Suite).

This Festival Brochure was designed and produced by:

POLLEN COUNT

Rock Covers

“Truly original, just like the original”, is the perfect epithet that describes The Pollen Count. A band perfectly suited to their task, who between them have played with and supported such luminaries as Sir Elton John, Joe Cocker, Santana, Robert Plant, Eric Clapton, The Who and Bob Dylan and graced the stages of such iconic venues as The Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Arena and Glastonbury.

9.30pm - 10.30pm

70’s

Few bands these days can hold an audience spellbound for hours on end. Fewer still can ignite a party from their opening number, and simultaneously blow away even the most cynical of musos with their technical dexterity. And you’ll see a hell of a lot of bands before you witness an act that wear the sexiest outfits that wouldn’t have been allowed in the 70’s, leap offstage to join the crowd, and still brew up a disco storm as powerful as that of the mighty Uncle Funk & The Boogie Wonderband! “Look out George Clinton!” warned the UK’s leading music magazine, Mojo “Uncle Funk & The Boogie Wonderband is a collection of badass musical muthas who will stoke up the disco inferno until they reach glitter ball meltdown!”

They deliver a truly wonderful sound, passionate and heartfelt renditions of much beloved songs, delivered with a technical experience and attention to detail that is simply staggering. To see this band live is an incredible musical journey.

Are you getting the picture yet? Uncle Funk & The Boogie Wonderband is a gig experience like no other – crazy enough to get any party started, but musically hot enough to keep the funk rolling all night, with every song a stone-cold classic from the heyday of the Good Times.

Quartet

The Scott Quartet is a Cardiff based, up and coming string quartet comprising four girls: Beth FullerTeed, Isobel Scott, Jess Thornhill, and Sophie Nash, who all graduate from The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama this summer. In April 2014 they won the inaugural Bridgewood & Neitzert String Quartet prize, the prestigious Cavatina Intercollegiate String Quartet Prize 2014, and were awarded scholarships to study at the Wintergreen Academy, Virginia, USA. They have given a wealth of public performances around Cardiff and beyond.

Rock

Not many tribute bands get invited on stage to perform with their heroes but UK Foo Fighters frontman Jay Apperley made history when he was personally asked on stage by none other than Dave Grohl himself to perform ‘White Limo’ with the actual Foo Fighters!

Tonight’s performance will feature a variety of works to include Dvorak’s popular String Quartet no. 12, also known as the ‘American Quartet’.

An original band creating music that is reminiscent of Led Zeppelin and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their debut DIY EP ‘Machine Gun Artistry’ was recorded in a Monmouth garage and, along with playing live in some of South Wales’ biggest local venues, has had airplay on BBC and commercial radio.

Fans of the UK version know that rarely is a tribute performed with such obvious love and passion for the music; lookalike and sound-alike Jay Apperley becomes rock legend Dave Grohl both vocally and slinging a guitar. Piling through hit after hit, the band perform all the classics - such as ‘Everlong’ and ‘Best of You’ alongside brand new material from the Foo’s new album ‘Sonic Highways’. They absolutely nail the true vibe of a Foo’s live experience, playing all the singles with extra parts and the sing-along bits as well.

BUSKING FESTIVAL After the success of last year’s Busking Festival we are once again bringing music to the streets of Monmouth. Musicians of all styles, genres and ages will be hoping to bring a smile to you face and a tap to your feet. Street performers will aim to wow and entertain you.

...with Aaron Meli

The Way it Works There will be busking zones throughout the town including White Swan Court, Beaufort Arms Square, Church Street, outside the Shire Hall/Punch House, The Oldway Centre and Monnow Bridge. The Robin Hood will host the Open Mic Stage with 15 minutes slots running from 10.30am – 6.00pm. These can be booked from 9.00am on the day, so please turn up early to book your slot. The Festival Committee will choose five acts to go on to play the Main Stage on Carnival Sunday, 26th July (from 3pm onwards after the Carnival prizes have been awarded). To perform on the Open Mic Stage and be in with a chance of securing a Festival Main Stage slot buskers MUST busk around town.

Help us create a magical musical Monmouth!

Slapping Skins was created in summer 2002 by Aaron Meli, an experienced percussion tutor who instructs and performs with djembe (West African hand drum), djun djun drums, cajun, bougarabou and darabuka. Aaron plays and performs on drum-kit and other world percussion although his latest challenge is a drum closer to home... the bodhran, as he seeks to discover more about the celtic roots of drumming.

If you have any questions or for more information please contact [email protected]

Aaron’s first experience of drumming came in the form of West-African traditional rhythms via Mamady Keita and having a special affinity with the djembe he bases much of his workshop work around these traditional West-African rhythms. On Carnival Sunday, come and join him at The Robin Hood and introduce yourself to different instruments from a range of cultures.

BARE KNUCKLE PARADE

Folk

Born on the cobbled streets of Bath, Bare Knuckle Parade brings together five musicians who share a love of ‘sing until your jaw is broken’ drinking songs. Their debut single ‘Star of Dundee’ has received national exposure through the Dermot O’Leary show on BBC Radio 2, and reached No. 6 in the iTunes Singer-Songwriter charts in under 24 hours. The band fuse traditional Celtic-folk with rock and punk undertones; a formula that has sold out shows at numerous venues across the country. “Hands down the best gig to take place in Nottingham this summer and a definitely band to watch out for.” Nottingham Post “Bare Knuckle Parade started life busking on the streets of Bath, and have fast become the city’s favourite live band.” Louder Than War

New Bands

New Zealand based duo Joseph & Maia have been making music for the last three years, establishing themselves as songwriters and as a hardworking touring act.

Rive are a brand new female duo from London, who write, play and produce their own ambient electro pop music.

Influenced by the likes of Ryan Adams, Ben Howard, The Staves and Noah Gundersen, the pair have quickly developed a unique sound that is ‘Joseph & Maia’.

Originally from Monmouth, Ceri Jones (electric guitar, vocals) met Natascha Polke (pads, vocals) in London, over a mutual love for songwriting and sangria.

18 year old Max has been playing guitar for 6 years. During that time he has regularly performed solos in school and as lead guitar in his old band.

The follow up to their debut EP ‘Roll Up Your Sleeves’ was released in April 2015.

They recently came to the attention of the Roundhouse, who have taken them on as Resident Artists, and will be touring the festival circuit this summer, including a performance at Camp Bestival.

Having recently won the tri-school competition ‘Monmouth's Got Talent’ Max is looking forward to the Festival and his biggest audience yet!

New Band/Rock

The Lash are a 45,000 RPM rock & soul hurricane from Newport, South Wales, UK, featuring the astonishing vocal talents of Erin McNamara and former 60ft Dolls drummer Carl Bevan behind the kit and on production duties.

Featuring ex members of The October Country, Spiridion and Jack Vs Jill.... Crisis Talks have an alternative rock sound with a dark pop vibe, full of energy, creating their own take on the genre

SKY VALLEY MISTRESS

Rock

Sky Valley Mistress mean business as they come swaggering out of Blackburn to set hips shaking and pulses racing with a blend of dirty blues and raw rock and roll. With clear influences from legendary rock and roll bands, such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, the band have applied this classic, mature craftsmanship to their songs with a powerful and assertive edge, giving them a refreshingly familiar sound.

www.skyvalleymistress.com

Rock

The Vitamins are a three-piece rock & roll group that play pop songs with electric guitars. Formed in 2012 in the corner of their local bar with a plan of writing songs like Sam Cooke as played by Black Sabbath, the Vitamins are Dick Phillips (vocals & guitar), Olie Swift (bass) and Neil Baldwin (drums). The band released their debut single, ‘Keys To The Limousine,’ on 7” vinyl in 2013. Described by BBC 6 Music as “reminiscent of early Black Keys and The White Stripes,” the track gained repeat airplay on XFM and BBC Radio in support of a launch show at Camden's Barfly. Building a reputation for fully-charged live shows after sharing bills with bands like Dingus Khan, Casual Sex, Love Buzzard and more, the band’s second single was a song about 1950’s Mexican wrestling called ‘El Santo vs Los Vitaminas.’ The sold-out cassette release came with the same level of acclaim - the Huffington Post describing it as “proper balls out, testosterone-fuelled action.”

TURRENTINE JONES

Soul

The anchors of the Turrentine Jones sound are Julian Neville, whose slicing, fuzzed riffs draw a comparison to Steve Cropper, and Thomas Scotson, who provides much of the groove with his floating organ lines. In 2009 Neville moved to England from his native Australia and began searching for musicians, where he met (now former) drummer Chris Carcamo. By late 2010, and with the addition of organist Thomas Scotson, they officially became Turrentine Jones and together performed their first show at North London Tavern in London.

Soul

They are celebrating 25 years together and have played from Soho to Cairo with everyone from Jools Holland to Edwin Starr. Louder Than War said “They have the look, the sound, the lot. Dressed smartly in black, there is a proper feel of professionalism, with just that little bit of gangster-chic thrown in for good measure, with the heavies on the right on the brass, the ladies on the left on backing vocals, and Mike “Big Mac” McNamara himself, proudly centre stage, with something of the look of Al Pacino about him”. James Whale said “I have to say if I was having a party I would be getting hold of Big Mac's Wholly Soul Band...makes you wanna dance, sing and ding a ling!”.

The band’s sound is rooted in modern garage rock and blues rock, while frequently being referred to as a cross between Booker T. & the MG’s and the Rolling Stones. In 2013 the band hit their stride, and the growing radio support of BBC Introducing elevated them onto the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury Festival performing to resounding success.

We are open daily serving breakfast, lunch, homemade cakes/fruit pies, high teas, cream teas, loose leaf tea and freshly ground coffee.

CHINA CRISIS REDRACER

Rock

9.30pm - 10.30pm

Pop/80’s

China Crisis’ distinctive AOR-fuelled pop songs charted in the 80’s when they spent a total of 92 weeks in the charts. Who said the Eighties were all bad? China Crisis, for instance, were largely considered one of the better musical things about that much-maligned decade.

RedRacer are four incredibly established performers, producers and songwriters in the form of John Hogg (Frontman/Bass), Sean Genockey (Lead Guitars), Jesse Wood (Guitar) and Dan Kavanagh (Drums). The band has a gift for honing classic rock muscle for a post-punk, futurist era, but there’s an unashamed heart beating at the centre, a vulnerability among the riffage which is truly compelling.

They formed in 1979 in Kirkby on Merseyside, with a core band of vocalist/keyboardist Garry Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon. The band was signed to Virgin Records and recorded their debut album, Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms: Some People Think It’s Fun to Entertain, which was released in December 1982.

When RedRacer released their first cut from their debut album, entitled ‘Put It Out’, it immediately garnered the band masses of support on the airwaves with plays from Radio 1, BBC London, XFM, Amazing Radio, Team Rock Radio, and it was playlisted at Kerrang Radio. Their debut album, ‘Define’, was then officially released on Dissention Records and Artist Management.

A re-release of ‘African & White’ became China Crisis’ first hit in the UK, reaching number 45 in the UK Singles Chart. When the follow-up single, ‘Christian’ made UK number 12 in early 1983, this brought them to national prominence along with ‘Wishful Thinking’. The band toured Europe and USA during the late eighties and performed in front of crowds as large as 87, 000 in Germany.

COMMEMORATIVE WALK Following on from the success of our inaugural walk in November 2014, the Monmouth Walkers Are Welcome group is pleased to be part of the Monmouth Festival programme this year. Our second Commemorative Walk will take place on Sunday 2nd August, which will be closer to the anniversary of the date in August 1914 when soldiers of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers marched off to war, some never to return. The walk, which is just under a mile, will start from The Castle at 11.00am and will follow the route taken by the soldiers to the site of the old Monmouth Troy railway station.
