I am delighted to offer my moral support to One World Arts for providing a valuable forum for persons of all ages to gain a greater appreciation of global issues through the cinematic arts. This year`s program consists of 17+ compelling shorts and feature length documentaries that address a variety of important global issues.

In addition, I want to congratulate One World Arts as the producer of the longest-running documentary film festival in Canada’s capital. I want also to acknowledge One World Arts, the documentary producers, sponsors and volunteers for dedicating efforts, expertise and cinematic talents to the successful organization of this highly educational film festival.

FESTIVAL PASSES: $60 general; $48 members/ students/65+/low-income Access to 1 ticket/program throughout the 2017 One World Film Festival. Passes are non-transferable and are valid only for individual/personal use. Pass holders should arrive up to 15 minutes before show times to check in and confirm attendance for specific screenings.
TICKETS/PROGRAM: $15 general; $12 members/ students/65+/low-income The members/students/65+/low-income rate is valid only for current One World Arts members, full-time students, seniors 65+, and persons earning a low-income. Students and seniors must show avalid student ID or proof of age on request at the venue. Low-income earners are not required to show proof of earnings.

Zachary Greenleaf, a young Mi’gmaq from Gesgapegiag, is determined to reintroduce the “Three Sisters” - the traditional white corn, squash and beans used in Indigenous gardens with the support of other youth in his community.
On October 12, 2006 at sunrise on Victoria Island in Ottawa members of The Midnight Messenger, Amnesty International Canada’s human rights drum circle, began a 24-hour vigil in support of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The vigil was a call to action to the Canadian government to reinstate support the Declaration and for Canada. Presented with Amnesty International Canada.
A group of unlikely warriors - including members of the Mi’kmaq Elsipogtog First Nation, French-speaking Acadians and white, English-speaking families - fights to protect their water from the oil and natural gas industry and wins an indefinite moratorium on fracking in New Brunswick.

Meet Ishi and her blender, Nancy and her family bible, Smith and his singing robotic turtle, Shirley-Anne and her vibrating hairbrush, and the volunteers who attempt to repair these and other items at Toronto’s Repair Café. The café is part of a global movement whose goal is to reduce household waste by fixing items for free and getting people to see their broken belongings as repairable and not merely replaceable.
A thought-provoking look at alternative and creative ways of viewing agricuture, economics, energy and education, Tomorrow offers constructive solutions and actions on a local level that have the power to make a difference on a global level.

Montreal author Marie-Célie Agnant collects stories, dreams and demands from Parc-Extension residents, in order to write a letter to their Member of Parliament Justin Trudeau, now the 23rd Prime Minister of Canada. Presented with Ottawa Indie Fest.
Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms gets six fresh perspectives with In the Name of All Canadians, a compilation of short documentaries commissioned by the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. From Indigenous rights to the controversial “notwithstanding clause”, participating filmmakers take the Charter’s key tenets off the page and into the lived experiences of the country we call home. When Canada’s largest school board is slated to open the world’s largest Confucius Institute, the school trustees find themselves embroiled in a growing global controversy. Joined by a former instructor, hundreds of disgruntled parents launch a campaign to have the institute closed and are confronted by supporters.

This summer-fall, One World Arts gave immigrants, newcomers, and refugees the tools and training to produce short documentaries that look at Ottawa from their points of view. Experience the nation’s capital through the lens of Ottawa’s immigrant, newcomers and refugee residents. This project was made possible with funding from the Ottawa Community Foundation. A discussion will follow the screenings.
11,000 refugees have been stranded for months in the Idomeni refugee camp on the Greek/Macedonian border. This short documentary is a glimpse into their lives in a forgotten twilight zone, as they wait for the European borders to open. Presented with Oxfam Canada and Refugee 613.
Hani al-Moliya, a legally blind Syrian refugee and photographer, docments his life at a refugee camp in Lebanon and is granted asylum in Canada. A discussion will follow the screening. Presented with Oxfam Canada, Refugee 613, and UNHCR Canada.
