RICHARD SOWADA

PROGRAM DIRECTOR

DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER

This year’s festival boasts our largest programme yet, with movies from regulars such as Ben Wheatley, Jennifer Kroot, and the team of Suki Hawley and Michael Galinsky, who are also festival guests.

So – it’s Rev’s 20th year! How amazing.

There are retrospective sessions focusing on the work of Curt McDowell and experimental women’s cinema, comedies ranging from the dead-pan Neighborhood Food Drive and Wiener-Dog to the bad taste pleasures of Assholes, documentaries on the nature of art, on (inner and outer) space travel, on cinema, on literature, and on four different Australian bands. There are movies about first relationships and worst relationships, demons, aliens, and pets. We have works from acclaimed emerging talents like Ingrid Jungermann and Deb Shoval, and established directors like Amat Escalante and Ulrich Seidl. We’ve partnered with the Irish Film Festival to showcase movies, and with Fremantle Arts Centre to showcase video art. We have free movies for kids. And yes we have James Bond too. Prepare to be shaken and stirred.

Over the years I’ve explained the origins of the event many times but for those interested in seeing the actual artefacts and creative progression we suggest you take a trip to the Museum of Perth where the history of Rev is included in the great history of Perth picture palaces . It’s infinitely rewarding for the event to be acknowledged as a contributor to that. In working with Jack Sargeant on the programming I feel we’re actually connected personally to the works themselves. I feel that we play an active role in the life and history of the films and filmmakers and that in some way we are linked into the past, present and future of the form in so doing. I’m very proud of what Revelation has accomplished over its 20 years. I feel that its spirit of adventure is as strong as it ever was, its critical approach to the creative and business sector continues to set the pace for programming and audience development and its political viewpoint gives it a unique sense of purpose and drive. It is quite unlike any other event internationally. Finally I must deeply thank everyone who’s ever been involved in the event from Rev’s prototypes of Bombora Theatre and Cinema Tabu, its early 16mm days through until today. All know what kind of ride it has been, what it takes, where it’s come from and what can be achieved. It is a true team effort. See you in the dark.

INTRODUCTION

HON DAVID TEMPLEMAN MLA MINISTER FOR CULTURE AND THE ARTS

I am delighted to be attending the 20th Revelation Perth International Film Festival this year as Minister for Culture and the Arts. As a long-term, active participant in the arts in my local community, I have seen first-hand the positive role arts and culture plays in developing a community by bringing people together to entertain, educate and connect. For 20-years Revelation has been doing just that, building a stronger and more diverse program year upon year. Through profound documentaries, shock horror films, hilarious comedies, family friendly films, and everything in between, Rev has helped shape Perth’s film loving community not only during the festival but year round through their various touch points. And this year is no exception. I congratulate founder Richard Sowada on his immense passion and efforts guiding Revelation from inception to being an iconic film festival on the Perth festival calendar. The Western Australian Government, through Screenwest and Lotterywest, is proud to be the major supporter of the Festival. I wish the entire Revelation team and volunteers a successful festival and thank attendees for their continued support of the festival and enthusiasm for the arts.

A true visionary and pioneer of early cinema Georges Méliès directed some of the most beautiful movies ever conceived. Perhaps the original pioneer of visual effects, a lover of fantasy and believer in the magic of cinema, Méliès was an early master of stop frame animation andDETECTIVE special effects, wellMedia as a true FAMILY RULES - Metamorflix TOP KNOT - Blue as Forest storyteller. Most recently celebrated in Martin Scorsese’s multi-Oscar winning feature Hugo (2011), which opened up the director’s work to a younger audience and emphasised that Méliès work is as beautiful, visually lavish and spectacular today as it ever was. Revelation are proud to present The Georges Méliès Project, featuring seven films by the French cinema pioneer accompanied by a live performance of original scores by American composer Phillip Johnson.

Becoming Bond tells the story of George Lazenby, the Australian James Bond. From his early career as a mechanic to taking on one of the most iconographic roles in film – despite never acting before – Lazenby’s biography is a larger than life tale of chance, risk, and opportunity. This almost-unbelievable biography – Lazenby only played Bond once, famously turning down the role after On Her Majesty’s Secret Service – is brought to life by director Greenbaum’s careful handling of the material. On screen the charismatic Lazenby is the perfect storyteller and interviewee, meanwhile the dramatic recreations (with Josh Lawson playing Lazenby) add a depth to the material. Becoming Bond is a film that appreciates and understands its subject and Lazenby’s wit and sense of the absurd are given space, but the film doesn’t gloss over his regrets either, all of which gives Becoming Bond a sense of genuine warmth. Join us for our famous opening night with guests aplenty, lashings of free drinks and food, DJs and that special vibe that is Rev’s annual celebration of cinema. From 6pm onwards we’ll have our traditional Luna Projection Show bringing the outside of the cinema to life in the most surprising of ways. After the film our fabulous volunteers will then show you to our opening party at The Blue Flamingo located 2 minutes walk down Oxford St. Ticket includes film and after party.

LONDON FILM FESTIVAL

A tough and tender love story about friendship, first love and staying sane in small town Ireland. ‘Mad’ Mary McArdle (Seána Kerslake) needs to find a date for her best friend’s wedding. But her attempts to find a partner are a disaster … until she meets Jess (Tara Lee - The Fall) and everything changes. This remarkable first feature from Darren Thornton has been wowing festival audiences around the world since its award winning debut at the Galway Film Fleadh last year. Thornton has a way with words and empathy for the small-town characters who inhabit the underbelly world of his home town of Drogheda (just north of Dublin). Thornton eschews the obvious picture postcard locations, choosing instead the faux pubs and tawdry discos as a background for this love story with a twist. There’s a dark but ribald humour to ‘Mad’ Mary’s cinematic small town Irish world reminiscent of Pat McCabe’s The Butcher Boy. It’s now an Ireland of fast food Mac-jobs and petty racism but Darren Thornton finds humour and hope and displays a genuine affection for the language and humanism of modern Ireland. Join us for our first ever opening night in Fremantle with complimentary drinks and nibbles from 6pm at Luna SX and film at 7pm. Usual ticket prices apply.

EXHIBITION: WARP The Revelation Perth International Film Festival is one of the most exciting and respected independent cinema festivals in Australia. Celebrating its twentieth anniversary in 2017, Revelation is renowned for its thoughtful and provocative program, lively discussion sessions and passionate advocacy for Australian screen culture.

Revelation is delighted to partner with FAC for the first time to present Warp. Bringing together eight leading and emerging artists from Victoria and WA, this exhibition of video works explores the way our increasingly screen-dominated lives are affecting our perception of reality and the way we interact and connect with others.

SAT 27 MAY – SUN 16 JUL

Shifting ideas around intimacy and isolation, the performative instincts within our online exchanges and the threats and promises of a digitised personal history are some of the themes explored in this thought provoking and sometimes challenging series of works.

Suspended Voices is a video projection artwork literally ‘suspended’ within Perth’s historic St George’s Cathedral. It’s an audiovisual requiem for voices and didgeridoo created by audiovisual artist/musician Roly Skender. Unlike anything that has been presented in the Cathedral before, Suspended Voices draws from the space it inhabits, including vocal performers from the St George’s Cathedral Consort and the deep didgeridoo of Noongar man Olman Walley. As a modern requiem, the theme of death pervades. However, the ‘final’ state is not viewed as a conclusion. Borrowing from the musical concept of a ‘suspended’ chord, the work presents death as an in-between state, equal to that preceding life. Subsequently, the state of suspension is also one of potential, representing a cycle of resolving life and suspended death/ pre-birth states. The magnificent St George’s Cathedral provides the perfect canvas for this mesmerising audiovisual installation.

Star and Australia’s only Bond George Lazenby in attendance. Session includes film, 1 hour Conversation + 45min signing.

For many fans of James Bond On Her Majesty’s Secret Service ranks amongst the very best of the Bond movies. With a plot concerning germ warfare and the sinister S.P.E.C.T.R.E organisation, headed by Ernst Stavro Blofeld, this is classic Bond that still seems contemporary. The sixth film adapted from Ian Fleming’s books stars George Lazenby who stepped into the role vacated by Sean Connery with apparent ease, bringing a more natural nuance to Bond and leaving his own mark on 007. The film has all the classic Bond ingredients as well as boasting the dream cast that includes Telly Savalas as the villainous Blofeld, and, straight from appearing on the hit TV series The Avengers, Diana Rigg as Tracy. This screening will feature an introduction by George Lazenby, and will be followed by a very special In-Conversation between George Lazenby and FilmInk’s own Travis Johnson. Please note that there will be an interval between the end of the film and the In Conversation.

LIFE IN PICTURES

What is ageing? Does it mean ‘getting old’? Is it ‘getting older’? Or is it simply ‘growing’? The Life in Pictures filmmaking competition is a unique collaboration between government, the arts and the community that’s centered on stimulating discussion about ageing, celebrating achievements of those who are ageing and diving into cultures each who have a different perspective on what it is to age. Relevance in the workforce, finances, living in a cashless society, sex and sexuality, relationships to family and community, housing, health care, vulnerability to elder abuse and myriad other forces come into play. Like-wise the contribution people who are now seniors make and have made in building the communities we inhabit globally and locally are not always acknowledged or recognised. Their stories of triumph, achievement and of course struggle are forces that surround them and inform us. This film competition asked filmmakers to develop and shoot a film up to 2-minutes looking at perspectives on ageing in the community and is designed to raise and enhance awareness of the rewards and challenges of ageing. There are three entry categories each with a tailored prize pool worth around $6,000 in each section: • Under 17 • 18–59 • 60+ Join us for a special screening and gala presentation of films from each of these categories as we give out more than $20,000 in cash and prizes for the lucky winners!

Confessions is a special jewel in the program that was produced while Curt was a student at the San Francisco Art Institute studying with George Kuchar who quickly became a long-time friend, lover and collaborator. As an openly gay and truly pansexual filmmaker Curt celebrated sex, intimacy and human connection. He was as comfortable playing with genre as reveling in melodrama via camp aesthetic and counterculture bohemia. Several films star the Kuchar brothers alongside frequent collaborators Mark Ellinger and Ainsley Pryor. As portrayed in True Blue and Dreamy “dreams don’t just come true they are true.” This is the sweetest sentiment one could relate about McDowell’s fearless, heart-felt and funny work. A very special opportunity to experience Only At The Air, Only At Each Other - a unique VR work exhibited prior to the screening of 78/52 on Saturday 8th July. The work also informs the talk Working In VR at the SAE on Sunday 9th July. Only The Air, Only At Each Other is an experimental exploration of in-between spaces, of spaces like waiting rooms, airports and in the case of Only At The Air, hotel rooms. It features a virtual reimagining of Marion Crane’s room at the Bates Motel (from Alfred HItchcock’s Psycho) and works metaphorically as a purgatorial space, a space between starting point and destination, and as an in-between space between life and death. Realisation by Greg Ferris, sound design by Alex Davies, voice-over by Cameron Stewart “No one really runs away from anything. It’s like a private trap that holds us in like a prison. You know what I think? I think that we’re all in our private traps, clamped in them, and none of us can ever get out. We scratch and we claw, but only at the air, only at each other, and for all of it, we never budge an inch...” Norman Bates in Psycho. This VR work will be exhibited at 1:30pm prior to the screening of 78/52 in the Luna Bar on Sat 8th and at 11.00am on Sunday 9th prior to Working in Virtual Realities at SAE, Northbridge (see Industrial Revelations).

SPECIAL EVENTS

Perth zombie lovers and movie buffs are invited to a musical celebration of arguably the most influential zombie movie of all time. The Night of the Living Dead! George A. Romero’s 1968 classic will never sound so good, with experimental arts/music collective Genrefonix unleashing a rockin’ set of original horror music and soundscapes sync’d to a mash up of the best movie scenes and zombie action. Back in ‘68 the film’s original producers failed to file for copyright correctly, allowing the movie and themes to be copied, repackaged and resold by anyone and everyone. The result was the birth of the modern zombie, including many of the shuffling, groaning, flesh eating traits we’ve come to love. Where would the The Walking Dead be without George A. Romero?! Come in costume. Come in make up. Come and get your zombie fix back where it all began. Join us for Zombie burlesque dancers and costume prizes to the event.

SUN 16 JULY, 6PM, BABUSHKA 742 NEWCASTLE ST, LEEDERVILLE

$10 or Free Entry with a ticket stub from any Revelation Film

Magnolia’s returns for its fifth entry in the franchise, promising to be better than Rocky V (the worst of the Rockys) and Star Trek V (aka Don’t Let Shatner Direct) combined! Don’t think of it as Magnolia’s Rev Show 5 then, think of it as our 4 & 1/2. Like if Fellini was alive today, but spent his time reflecting on DeNiro’s last five films on a podcast in a dusty garage. Yes, North Perth’s most iconic live DIY talk show is back at Rev to celebrate its 20th anniversary as the film festival of choice! Like a tasteful reboot of The Dick Cavett Show with the dining ambience of Casablanca and the exuberance of Zabriskie Point, Magnolias engages in fun, loose and thoughtful convos with great guests in front of an intimate audience. Hosted by Tristan Fidler (RTRFM’s Movie Squad) and Matt Aitken (Paddle Clubb), this is chance to ‘Rupert Pupkin’ local champions and visiting talents on behalf of the Revelation Film Festival. All the bonus DVD features are here as well - Mystery Drinks with Nick Odell, Amber’s Love Seat, the nonsensical interruptions of “Jimmy’s Choice”, Brett “he’s the Gladiator again” on the music cues and SFX, and a whole lot more! Grab a drink and enjoy big (hearted) (future) film “stars” live on the couch for a chat, some anecdotes and some reflections on the “silver screen”. It’s the Fast Five of Magnolias: less about cars and explosions, more about chinwagging and quality snacks, contemplating the big cinematic questions we all ask ourselves, “Who would be a better friend to hang out with - The Rock or Vin Diesel?”

EXHIBITION: PICTURE PALACES Revelation Perth International Film Festival is delighted to present our 20th anniversary commission Picture Palaces. Inspired by the recent Art Deco Society of Western Australia publication Picture Palaces of the Golden Era, published by the National Trust, this visual arts exhibition will pay homage to the evolution of the motion picture show in the West.

FROM THURSDAY 6 JULY MUSEUM OF PERTH THE ATLAS BUILDING 8-10 THE ESPLANADE GROUND FLOOR

Proudly presented by

Proudly supported by

In 1896 the city’s first motion picture show was screened to a street audience by projection from a Barrack Street hotel balcony. After several weeks the police tried to close down the enterprise because crowds were blocking the street! It would take another 20 years before Perth would see the construction of its first cinema but from then Perth’s city, its suburbs and its country-side saw some of the most spectacular cinemas and theatres anywhere in the country. Many are sadly forgotten despite their auditoriums still existing right in the heart of the city, but this exhibition brings this glorious and fascinating history to life in unexpected ways. Revelation is proud to have been part of this great tradition having screened and been housed in some of Perth’s most iconic theatre and cinemas buildings - His Majesty’s Theatre, Victoria Hall, the Princess Theatre, The Astor, Cinema Paradiso, Luna and The Blue Room Theatre. Picture Palaces will also bring to life the Rev journey with the very first public display of 19 years of poster artworks, artefacts and a film festival narrative by festival founder and director Richard Sowada. The exhibition concept and design has been driven by a talented ECU Design team who’ve delivered a wonderful space filled with reflections of the past and visions of the future. We invite you to step into one of Perth’s finest examples of 1930’s Art Deco architecture, the Museum of Perth, and immerse yourself in our bold exhibition Picture Palaces.

MICHAEL GALINSKY - PRODUCING LOW BUDGET DOCUMENTARIES

YOUR PRESS RELEASE SUCKS: HOW TO GET NOTICED AND WRITTEN ABOUT

SATURDAY 8 JULY, 10AM-NOON THE BACKLOT PERTH, 21 SIMPSON ST WEST PERTH

SAT 15 JULY, 1-3PM BUDBURST, 406 OXFORD ST, MT HAWTHORN

Michael Galinsky will give a survey of his work, including his music, photography, and film- discussing how the different forms build upon each other, allowing the work to grow and expand. He will discuss his evolving relationship to documentation, cultural frames, perception, work, and health. Further he will discuss strategies that he and Suki Hawley have developed that help them take advantage of the resources they have access to. He will ramble a little, but so does his work. Suki will try to get him back on track.

Arts journalists and editors are busy, overworked, and underappreciated people who are bombarded day and night by requests for free publicity. You’re an artist, a musician, a filmmaker, or a performer who needs people to know about your work – how do you stand out from the pack without resorting to actually paying for advertising? Travis Johnson will teach you.

Register at: www.revelation-michael-galinsky.eventbrite.com.au

This is practical workshop covering writing style, formatting, imagery and more, exposing the nuts and bolts principles behind effective self-promotion to the arts media. Participants are asked to bring along a press release of artist’s biography of their own devising for ritual dissection. Register at: www.revelation-travis-johnson-critic.eventbrite.com.au

SUKI HAWLEY - EDITING WORKSHOP SATURDAY 8 JULY, 1-3PM THE BACKLOT PERTH, 21 SIMPSON ST WEST PERTH

Suki Hawley will begin by discussing the process of organizing, shooting, and editing the two Rumur narrative films Half-Cocked and Radiation. As these films are a mash-up between narrative and documentary, she will talk about the difficulty of merging these different aesthetics. She’ll then shift to focus on the transition from narrative to documentary filmmaking from an editing/storytelling standpoint. Working from the films, she will go through strategies she and Michael Galinsky have developed for delivering information in ways that people can digest - how technology and technique has to unite with ideas and content to make an effective film.

SO YOU WANT TO BE A FILM CRITIC SUNDAY 16 JULY, 3-5PM THE OLD LAUNDRY, 22 ANGOVE ST, NORTH PERTH

Everyone’s got an opinion about movies. Some of those opinions are worth money. Is yours? No, probably not – but nobody’s is these days. Still, there’s merit in applying critical thought to film, and Travis Johnson is here to show you how. Participants are asked to bring one piece of film criticism that they have written of about 500 words length for discussion. Register at: www.revelation-travis-johnson-critic.eventbrite.com.au

George Lazenby: Australia’s Man Of Action There are a thousand ways to find fame in the movie industry, but few come close to George Lazenby who used his good looks, charm and a double-dose of Aussie self confidence to win one of Cinema’s most coveted roles: James Bond, 007. Born in Goulburn, Australia in 1939, Lazenby had little interest in schooling; instead choosing to find his own way– first as a highly successful car salesman, then as a top male model. It was his modeling career that brought him to London where an agent suggested he try to get an audition with the Bond filmmakers, not an easy proposition for someone with no acting experience! Not only did George get the audition, he landed the role and his film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), was a huge success and is now considered one of the best in the series. Not wanting to be locked into Bondage, George again went his own way, appearing in a myriad of films including the 1972 action/thriller Universal Soldier; Hong Kong action films like The Man From Hong Kong (1975) and A Queen’s Ransom (1976); American TV series including Hawaii 5-0, Superboy and Baywatch. He also starred in the Emmanuel series with Sylvia Kristel and still receives offers, appearing in recent movies like Death Game, A Winter’s Rose and the forthcoming crime thriller, The Order. A Dark Song is a strong character driven work, matching the obsessive and unnerving Joseph (an impressive performance from Steve Oram seen in Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers and director of Aaaaaaaah! at last year’s Rev), with the haunted and desperate Sophia (an equally impressive Catherine Walker seen at Rev in Patrick’s Day last year), each driven to psychological extremes. A Dark Song eschews many of the clichés associated with the genre in favour of an exploration of the protagonists and the process they are undertaking, the tension between the psychological and magical elements that follows is both unexpected and fascinating. The considered handling of magical and psychological themes is exceptionally effective, and in part the film is reminiscent of The Wicker Man, while the intense mood draws upon films such as Nick Roeg’s Performance. “A spellbinding psycho-horror debut, despite its limited budget.” THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

In 1965 a young detective working for the Shah’s secret police heads for the remote island of Qeshm in his tangerine Chevy Impala to investigate the purported suicide of an exiled political prisoner. The prisoner has been living in the wreck of a ship from the seventeenth century, a relic from a battle when the British fought with the Persians against the Portuguese. Is this the opening of some kind of historical allegory? The detective enlists two friends to assist him. One is a sound engineer, who then goes missing on a film currently being shot, The Brick and the Mirror, (also screening at Rev) which is excerpted in this film. Another synopsis of A Dragon Arrives might read, “What happened to the soundman of Brick and Mirror while missing from the set?” They leave the island with a baby (some kind of reference again to Brick and Mirror), and the day after the Prime Minister is assassinated the detective is arrested. All these elements and more blend into an aesthetically outstanding film that Variety with justification calls “a high-end brainteaser”.

Losing his girlfriend, job and home in a matter of days, Eli finds himself living in the back of his truck, a parting gift from his parents who have decided to move to Arizona. Deep in an existential crisis, and despite the fact that it’s the middle of winter, he agrees to deliver an engine to a mechanic upstate. A chance meeting with a young woman, Anya, leads to a slowly developing relationship. But it becomes apparent that things may not be quite as straightforward as they appear, with both Eli and Anya having uncommon interests in hair. Definitely not for the sensitive, Assholes is a comedy about selfish assholes that goes where few other films have. In terms of sheer audacity, shock value, and inventive humour there’s few comparisons, although the work of filmmakers such as John Waters and David Cronenberg would offer a starting place, but Assholes exists in a world of its own. Thematically the existentialist film explores the meaning of love and the difficulty commitment and has been compared to Antonioni’s L’Avventura. But this groundbreaking film also branches out into a biting social commentary of Iranian society in the 60s, a society undergoing rapid modernisation but blind to its future. Soleyman Minassian’s expressionistic black-and-white widescreen photography, with its stylish evocation of the urban milieau by night, is notable. The Brick and the Mirror is essential viewing for those seeking to understand the roots of the post-revolutionary New Iranian Cinema. Revelation screens a digitally restored version of the film.

Anna does what any good partner does, and soon a group of friends enter the living room labyrinth to find and rescue Dave. A gloriously realised, low budget, magical realist comedy, director Bill Watterson’s feature debut makes a nod to adventure films and existential comedies, but ultimately it retains its own unique, cardboard style. His skill at Boules alongside those who stand by him and not seem to notice, propel their team to the Scandinavian Boules finals but for Rikard the road is more fraught than for most. The Giant is yet another excellent addition to the current worldwide “magical realism” film movement seen in such strength and numbers this year. More than a story of a person coping with a confusing and unjust community, The Giant is perhaps more about having to build our own reality to survive the narrowness of others.

Thankfully British filmmaker Duncan Lloyd offers to help smuggle the King across the border to Europe and travel back to Belgium, overland, through the Balkans. Although made before Brexit, with its themes of travel, migration and political crisis it’s hard not to see similarities to contemporary political debates in King of the Belgians. With its timely release, tight and well-observed script, and perfect performances from the cast, the film is a joy to watch. “An enormously appealing mockumentary blending gently satirical humour with deeper underpinnings, ‘King of the Belgians’ is a delightful, surprisingly respectful ribbing of the incongruity of monarchy, Belgium, and the Balkans.” VARIETY WINNER KNF AWARD ROTTERDAM INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Beautifully animated, My Life As A Zucchini presents an honest look at the lives of ten-year olds, as Zucchini and his new friends grow and find their way in the world. Winning the Most Popular Feature Film at Melbourne International Film Festival in 2016, alongside eighteen other awards, My Life As A Zucchini is an emotionally complex and subtly powerful feature. Not suitable for younger children, My Life As A Zucchini touches on areas that some parents may find uncomfortable, although there is little here that the average twelve-year-old may be unfamiliar with, and the resulting film is far more honest and human for this. DOCUMENTARIES

In the spring of 1981 Irish Republican Bobby Sands’ 66-day hunger strike brought the attention of the world to his cause. This documentary powerfully expands on the personal story of Bobby Sands using archive footage, interviews, reconstructions and excerpts from Sands’ own evocative prison diary. When this film screened at the Galway Film Festival last July the post film Q&A almost descended into blows. 35 years have passed and the passion has not abated, nor have the issues discussed in the film faded into irrelevance. 1981 was possibly the year that Northern Ireland came closest to the conflagration of civil war. This film revolves around the question of when it is morally right to resort to violence to solve a political problem. Were Bobby Sands and his IRA comrades terrorists or freedom fighters? The radicalisation of the young Bobby Sands and the dissection of his decision to follow through on the ultimate act of violence is explored in the film with equanimity and tact. Bobby Sands is a divisive figure in Irish/UK history but Brendan Byrne’s beautifully crafted film sheds light on the question of the ‘terrorist/rebel/freedom fighter’ label and who gets to apply those labels in today’s world.

Crossing decades but culminating in the 60’s this engrossing documentary chronicles one of the turning points in the realisation where the needs of people epitomised by urban activist Jane Jacobs clashed head-on government urban planner Robert Moses. Moses - an enormously influential and powerful person – literally reshaped the New York urban landscape and was responsible for the destruction of entire working-class neighbourhoods and the migration of the evicted to huge brutal housing projects. Jacob’s approach on the other hand came from the perspective of interaction and community not isolation and expediency. In a titanic struggle with the streets of New York City as the battleground, Tyrnauer’s documentary is packed with Jane’s architectural and social observations that are both philosophical and prophetic and fired directly at city hall in the most inspiring of ways.

The Go-Betweens are an Australian legend. Emerging from the conservative streets of Brisbane during the punk explosion of the seventies, the duo of Robert Forster and Grant McLennan rapidly defined their own unique musical sound. Joined by drummer Lindy Morrison the band became unstoppable. Using archive, interviews with band members, fellow musicians, and associates, the film tells the story of one of the best loved and visionary of Australian bands. Fellow Queenslander Kriv (Boxing Day, Red Dog) Stenders creates the perfect visual language for the band, creating a movie that matches the aural palette of the band. With nine volumes in the series published, covering the midseventies to the present, Tales of the City spawned a TV series and cult following. Readers were drawn to the lives – both gay and straight – that were essayed in these books and many were inspired by the world they created. Through interviews with Maupin, as well as Neil Gaiman, Laura Linney, Amy Tan and Sir Ian McKellen, Kroot creates a movie, which explores Maupin’s life – from his conservative youth, to his growth into a mature, witty writer – his creative process, and ongoing cultural influence. More than this, The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin is a celebration of the writer, his life, and the cultures of San Francisco.

WHERE IS ROCKY II? DIRECTED BY PIERRE BISMUTH, 2016/93MIN/UNCLASSIFIED 15+

Is it possible for internationally recognised artist Ed Ruscha to have created a mysterious work of art and hidden it in plain sight nearly forty years ago? Is it possible to have a movie that’s simultaneously a documentary, comedy, and mystery? Director and artist Pierre Bismuth, aided by a private detective and two screenwriters, wants to unravel the mystery and find the unknown, long lost artwork in this gloriously strange and endlessly entertaining movie that will have everyone talking long after the credits have rolled.

Bismuth, who previously won an Oscar for co-writing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, creates a perfectly realised work that shifts between multiple layers, each offering more tantalising possibilities. Where Is Rocky II? is a film that re-imagines the nature of cinema and traces the parallels between detective work and documentary research and between fantasy and art history.

Intro and Q+A with filmmakers Michael Galinksy and Suki Hawley

Taking in everything from community responses to Ku Klux Klan marches (filmed immediately after Michael Galinsky’s graduation) to events such as Occupy Wall Street and recent Trump Rallies, Working in Protest traces thirty years of protest, creating an immersive work that examines the ways in which politics and dissent has been, and continues to be, enacted on the streets and in public spaces. With Working in Protest Galinsky and Hawley demonstrate their considerable skill in communicating with audiences taking the viewer on an absorbing journey through activism, struggle and triumph, power and agitation and the power of the community against injustice and intolerance. Right in the moment it’s both inspiring and eye-opening.

SLAMDANCE

VENICE

Charles Bukowski – the hard living cult poet and author whose works include the novels Post Office, Ham on Rye, and Wome, and collections of poetry such as Hot Water Music, Love is a Dog from Hell and The Last Night of the Earth Poems – has long fascinated filmmakers. Commonly linked to the Beats, Bukowski had more in common with writers such as John Fante and other explorers of the tough realities of the human condition. Movies of Bukowski’s works include Barfly, Tails of Ordinary Madness, Crazy Love and Factotum and now, in You Never Had It; An Evening With Bukowski, the writer speaks. In 1981, journalist Silvia Bizio travelled to Bukowski’s home in San Pedro, California, to interview him. Spending an evening at the Bukowski home, drinking, smoking, and talking, the ensuing conversation was documented on U-matic video cassettes. But these recordings were thought to have been lost. Now, discovered nearly thirty-years later, these videotapes form the basis for You Never Had It: An Evening With Bukowski. Here the poet and author is in fine form, opening-up in an interview which is punctuated with readings by the poet. A true pleasure for fans old and new, as well as anybody interested in the literature of the twentieth century.

TITLE A true visionary and pioneer of early cinema Georges Méliès directed some of the most beautiful movies ever conceived. Perhaps the original pioneer of visual effects, a lover of fantasy and believer in the magic of cinema, Méliès was an early master of stop frame animation and special effects, as well as a true storyteller. Phillip Johnson has previously scored and performed life soundtracks to Tod Browning’s The Unknown (1927), Teinosuke Kinugasa’s Page of Madness (1926) and Murnau’s Faust (1926). He has scored numerous contemporary film and theatre productions. He has performed in Fast ’N’ Bulbous: the Captain Beefheart Project and has led The Microscopic Septet. After premiering in New York at the Lincoln Centre, The Georges Méliès Project has toured the world, wowing international audiences, and now it’s Perth’s turn!
