Welcome

to the 6th Overground Underground Festival

Join us for the many unique and exciting activities that make up this year’s Festival programme, as we celebrate all that is wonderful about the Ingleborough Dales! Those of you who have joined us in previous years will notice a few changes. We have spread the Festival out over the Summer months to allow you to join in more events than if they were running simultaneously over a weekend. We have also broadened our geographical remit to include Settle, opening up new opportunities and experiences. OGUG would not take place without the huge efforts from our contributors and volunteers. Anyone can contribute to the Festival, so do please get in touch if you would like to be involved. We could not deliver the event without the support of our sponsors and the donations we receive. Thank you to you all for your belief in OGUG and your passionate support. It just remains to say that we hope you have a wonderful time at the OGUG 2016 events, and enjoy the warm hospitality of our beautiful corner of the Yorkshire Dales.

‘Uncle Jeremy’s Household’ 6 Main Street, Ingleton, North Yorkshire, LA6 3EB. 015242 42404

http://myhigh.st/uncle-jeremy-s-household

‘Uncle Jeremy’s Household’ was a short story written by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1885, the year that he married Louise Hawkins at St Oswald’s Church, Thornton-inLonsdale. Set in and around Ingleton, the story features a young medical student from Baker Street, London and is clearly a prototype for the Sherlock Holmes stories which followed. Today’s ‘Uncle Jeremy’s Household’ is a shop in Ingleton village centre, selling an eclectic mix of fairtrade, traditional and novel items for babies and young children, plus a few indulgences for the home. When Arthur’s mother Mary lived in Masongill, he would have known this 18th Century building as ‘Preston’s Refreshment Rooms’.

My love of landscape comes from my early years – family walks and visits to many special places in the north of England, and further afield. Perseus & Whernside by Pete Collins

Photography became a serious hobby around 10 years ago and I feel it has given me many hours of pleasure and in the case of wildlife taught me the art of patience.

Most of my work so far has been in the Yorkshire Dales, with their combination of breathtaking landscapes and dark skies free of light pollution.

Stephen Knowles The changing light and the contrast between the seasons are a joy to photograph and can be quite challenging at times. I try to capture the essence of the British countryside, from rolling fields to rivers and waterfalls to mountains and stunning limestone scenery. This combined with some quintessential villages and of course the fantastic variety of wildlife this area has to offer, are all captured in my photography. www.stephenknowlesphotography.co.uk

Pete Collins Pete writes: I’ve had a lifelong interest in both astronomy and photography. I soon came to realise that what really inspired me were nightscapes - the interplay between our earthly landscape and the night sky. Andy Goldsworthy’s Toby’s Fold & Drove Arch Hut

The Shanties of Ribblehead by Philippa Troutman

This display will run throughout the summer. It can be accessed on any of the dates of the other exhibitions at the Community Centre.

Monday 15 - Sunday 21 August 2016 An exhibition of prints, drawings and text by Philippa Troutman.

Andy Goldsworthy is a well known sculptor, photographer and environmentalist who has produced many acclaimed sculptures set within the natural environment or urban surroundings. But did you know there is one of his sculptures situated just outside Ingleton?

Philippa writes: I live in a railway house on the site of one of the former Shanty towns of Ribblehead. I read, some years ago, that there were no known photographs of the thousands of people who lived here, at Ribblehead, when the Settle-Carlisle railway was under construction in the 1870s.

Come and find out more about Toby’s Fold and Drove Arch Hut, how it came to be and where to go to view it.

Hope (detail) © Philippa Troutman

I drew and painted the landscape. I walked the landscape. The massive presence of the railway and the absence of the people and their homes became my main visual concern. This exhibition is drawn from living here, walking the landscape, researching from texts of the 1870s and contemporary historical and archaeological articles and books.

Golden Gate, Yosemite Free Climbing

Darklight Director - Mike Brown Follow professional mountain bikers Graham Agassiz, Matt Hunter, and Matty Miles on a mind-bending night ride through the moonscapes of Southern Utah to the Ewok forests of the Pacific Northwest.

Director - Jon Glassberg She’s been trad climbing for only 3 years, but Emily Harrington didn’t let that sway her from the magnetic pull of El Capitan’s ‘Golden Gate’. Six days and 40 pitches later, she stood on the summit with broken skin, aching muscles and a smile that stretched across Yosemite Valley.

A physically and mentally demanding production, this piece was shot during the midnight hours over three intense weeks. Unlike anything ever seen before in the world of mountain biking, Darklight features arrestingly beautiful landscapes and world class riding.

A Line Across the Sky Director - Josh Lowell and Peter Mortimer The Fitz Roy traverse is one of the most sought after achievements in modern alpinism: A gnarly journey across seven jagged summits and 13,000 vertical feet of climbing. Who knew it could be so much fun? Join Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold on the inspiring - and at times hilarious - quest that earned the Piolet d’or.

Hang Son Doong

Director - Ryan Deboodt A visually stunning journey through what may be the largest cave passage in the world, Hang Son Doong.

Nicky Spinks - The Bob Graham Director - Ben Pritchard In April 2015 Nicky Spinks set out to beat her own women’s record of 18 hours 12 minutes for the Bob Graham Round, the legendary Lake District fell running endurance challenge. This film shows both the literal and metaphorical highs and lows of her record attempt. Farmer, record-breaking fell runner and cancer survivor Nicky Spinks was born in London. Nicky took up competitive running in 2001.
