Welcome to TechFest 2017 The aim of TechFest is to inspire everyone to have an Welcome to interest in STEM subjects – (science, technology, engineering and our maths) and celebrate the impact they have on our everyday lives. Now more than ever we are dependent on a steady stream of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians and in this programme we’ve tried to provide even more events than usual for budding young minds.

The Public Programme, with its thought-provoking and varied range of events and activities, is designed to offer something for everyone. I’m sure visitors to the festival will be interested in our digital safety theme with events exploring where our data goes and how we can stay safe from hacking in our homes. Our closing speaker, Europe’s top ethical hacker Jamie Woodruff, will share his insight into hacking and cyber security on September 28, at The University of Aberdeen. Having uncovered security holes in numerous high-profile operations, including how Kim Kardashian’s website was putting her fans’ data at serious risk, Jamie is one of the world’s leading authorities on hacking and cyber security. All tickets are available from Aberdeen Box Office.

Last summer, thanks to support from Chevron, we launched our Eureka Series which saw us take STEM workshops to children across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. We had a superb time at the Aberdeen Highland Games as well as our first visit to Portsoy Boat Festival. Following incredible feedback, we have a jam-packed programme of workshops in libraries and community spaces across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. organised for this summer and we hope to see you there.

TechFest joint principal sponsors BP and Shell continue to provide the foundation for our growth, contributing greatly to our development, allowing us to reach new audiences and extending the geographic reach of your Science Festival. We would not be able to deliver the quality and quantity of activities without our sponsors and supporters.

TechFest 2017

24th festival

The Activity Weekend will provide a fantastic platform to kickstart the main programme of events in August. Our exciting move to Robert Gordon University’s Garthdee Campus has allowed us to grow and provide an even greater diversity of workshops and shows for all ages. Sponsorship from Marathon Oil will see the continuation of our initiative so please do come and see what’s new this year on August 26 and 27. Our role in supporting young people and their future in the workplace has been a core part of our Public Programme strategy, with Statoil’s support within our Heroes of Tomorrow strand, and we hope to see secondary students join us at our public events starting on September 11. The official programme will open with award-winning cameraman Gordon Buchanan at The University of Aberdeen. Most recently, Gordon has been on our screens in the highly acclaimed Elephant Family And Me and Life in the Snow on BBC One and Life in Polar Bear Town and Tribes, Predators and Me on BBC Two. His talk will be a super start for what I am sure will be a popular programme, with underlying themes of digital safety and food and drink.

@TechFestNews

This programme would not be possible without the hard work and passion from the team and on behalf of myself and the Board I would like to thank our Festival Manager Jenny Taylor and Education Manager Molly Imrie in particular for their time and effort over the last 12 months. Finally, a thank you to our audiences old and new for supporting the festival. Your enthusiasm, appreciation and involvement makes all the difference. Have a smashing TechFest 2017.

To randomise or not to randomise? That is the question…

Health Serv Research U

Presented and Supported by: Public Engagement with Research Group at the Health Services Research Unit, University of Aberdeen Randomisation is a methodology first introduced by clinical trials pioneer and naval surgeon James Lind in 1747 on his quest to find a cure for sailors suffering with scurvy. The method has since been adapted and is now an integral part of clinical trials of drugs, surgeries and other therapies. It is an essential component that allows researchers to find out whether results really are caused by the treatment in question, or if they are the product of chance. Come along to our TechFest event to meet members of Aberdeen’s Health Services Research Unit, and be randomised into our very own TechFest trial – this time we’re not trying to cure scurvy: we’ll be looking to assess which sweet treats are the favourite of Aberdonians (tasters included)!

Renewable Energy Research at Robert Gordon University Presented by: Dr Sheikh Zahidul Islam and

Dr Firdaus Muhammad Sukki, Robert Gordon University The world’s energy demand is increasing rapidly and although fossil fuels are still the primary energy source, their contribution to global warming has been under scrutiny to seek cleaner and more sustainable alternatives. The supplies of modern renewable energy have shown the potential to meet the future demand for clean energy. Hydropower is leading the modern renewable in terms of electricity production. However, other sources such as, wind, solar, geothermal and marine powers are growing rapidly and showing potential to contribute in primary energy supply. The main challenges of wind and solar energy are the intermittent availability and variation in energy density. In this regard, fuel cells are one of the clean sources of energy that can make real contribution in the reduction of CO2 emission. This talk will present the current renewable energy research at Robert Gordon University. Dr Islam will present the use of Computational fluid dynamics to investigate the performance of PEM fuel cell and vertical axis wind turbine. Dr Muhammad Sukki will present the development of solar concentrator as an alternative to the traditional solar PV panel. Pictorial-panorama maps: where art and science meet Presented by: Dr Michael Wood, Emeritus Senior Lecturer,

University of Aberdeen

Handling energy in the body. Are we storing up trouble for the future? Presented by: Professor Mirela Delibegovic

and Dr Justin Rochford, University of Aberdeen Food gives us energy but do you ever wonder where it goes in the body and how we store and use it? Our bodies have highly specialised systems to send different nutrients from the diet to different organs for storage. These are then released later to meet our energy needs, again using precisely controlled mechanisms. Obesity is a major current health problem and prevents these storage systems working as they should. This can result in the development of obesity related health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers. Prof Mirela Delibegovic and Dr Justin Rochford will discuss how our bodies store nutrients from the food we eat, how we use the energy they provide and why this is important for keeping us healthy. They will also discuss how different diets affect this system and why some work whilst others don’t.
