Scout CSHS Mascot

Since 1989, Carver-Scott Humane Society has helped alleviate the suffering of hundreds of stray, displayed and neglected pets, who have nowhere else to turn, and placed them in new homes with loving families. For over 25 years, we have watched our community grow, along with the number of animals that need our help. Last year we adopted out hundreds of loving companion cats, dogs, kittens, puppies and a few exotics.

Your financial donations helps pay for food and medical care, including spay/neuters, exams and vaccinations.

Thanks to community support, we continue to follow Our Mission: Connecting animals in need with people who care.

To financially support our mission, CSHS has been holding animal walks since 1991. Walk/Run Fur Love is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Please come and join us. We can’t wait to see you there!

Check us out at www.carverscotths.org/walk.

HAPPY•ENDINGS Tess We adopted Tess the lovebird this spring and have been working with her to get her comfortable out of her cage. Her foster family asked us to send a picture when we had success. Today was the first time the bird sat on her owner’s (my son’s) shoulder without flying away. She walked on his shoulders while he did school work on his computer for at least a half hour. Just wanted to share our joy. Valerie Geary (Beckett and Tess)

Lily by McKayla Boelter, volunteer

Eleanor Hagen is a senior citizen who lives on her own, can still drive, and loves to talk about her family. Her family consists of sons, daughters, grandkids, and of course, Lily. “Come here Lily. Who’s a good kitty?” Eleanor says as she bends down to pet her cat. “She can be a bit shy. Let her come to you.” Lily wanders over and sniffs at my hands, and then rubs up against my fingers. She’s a beautiful black and white tuxedo cat. She lets me pet her once from head to tail and then wanders off to sniff here and there on her way to her seat by the window. 952-368-3553

Poofy Named after her racoon-style tail, Poofy was adopted at six months old. In June she celebrated her first birthday by curling up in a big old bowl and taking a catnap. After she woke up it was time to play with her big brother who was adopted only a month before Poofy found her forever home. Still a kitten at heart, Poofy loves challenging chipmunks and chasing bugs and butterflies all through the screen door. Happy Birthday to our summer Cover Girl!

When Lily was a new mom she was found by CSHS volunteers. Three kittens were born to her and were adopted out quickly. Lily, on the other hand, wasn’t adopted until some months later. She went to several Pet Adoption Days before Eleanor saw her and fell in love. Eleanor is no stranger to having cats as inside pets. She’s had several felines over the years, mostly Siamese ones. The last one Eleanor had was back in 2005. She had to give it up though when she went in for a triple bypass surgery and ended up spending more time than she thought at a hospital. By the time 2014 rolled around, Eleanor was ready for a new companion. Besides time, another factor that helped Eleanor decide to get a new cat was that the winter of 2013 was so cold. According to the Minnesota DNR website, the 2013-2014 winter was the coldest meteorological winter in 35 years. February 2014 was in a three-way tie for the 7th coldest and the 6th snowiest winter since 1873. So cold that Eleanor spent most of the time inside. Eleanor remembers thinking that the roads were too icy to venture out most days. Not wanting to risk broken bones, she would often stay in and watch the snow fall from the comfort of her home. She said it got lonely that winter. Frequently she thought how nice it would be to have a cat around. I watch Eleanor and Lily’s interactions and I can tell how much Eleanor enjoys having Lily around. She smiles as she talks about Lily. “I think she’s good for me,” Eleanor says. She gently rocks in her recliner as Lily snoozes on the top of the headrest.

“Animals are so perceptive. They’re worth having,” Eleanor tells me as she reaches her arm back to pet Lily. Every morning when Eleanor wakes up, Lily is right there with her. They go through their morning routine together, getting dressed, putzing around the kitchen, opening the blinds on the windows. Lily follows Eleanor around and jumps up on the window sill when Eleanor lets in the sunlight. They hang out together during the day, watching the goings on out the window. And every night at 10pm Lily finds Eleanor to let her know it’s time for bed. When Eleanor decided that she was ready for a cat, she took her granddaughter with her to a CSHS pet adoption day in Chaska. She remembers thinking to herself that she wanted an older cat. She didn’t want a kitten who would require a lot of attention and play time. She also knew she wanted a smaller cat. Eleanor had laughed as she told a volunteer that she needed a tiny cat because she had a little lap. Lily, once out of her cat carrier, had seemed so calm amidst the noise of a pet store. Seeing her sweet demeanor, Eleanor knew Lily was the cat for her. She ended up talking to the cat foster mom at length. Concerned about making Lily feel at home, Eleanor asked the cat foster mom a lot of questions about what kind of food Lily ate and what sort of toys she played with. Both satisfied that Lily was going to go to a good home, Eleanor ended up signing the adoption papers and taking Lily home that day. Eleanor tells me that it seems as if Lily had been waiting for her, that Lily was meant for her. Watching the two of them together now, I can see that it’s true. FURRY FOOTNOTES • SUMMER 2015

Interested in sponsoring or donating items for the silent auction? Great! Carver-Scott Humane Society is able to function through support from organizations and individuals like you! View the sponsorship/donation information at: http://www.carverscotths.org/rescue-roundup/ What’s in it for you: By contributing to the Rescue Roundup event, your business/organization can make a splash by being included in all marketing materials in the months leading up to the event. Also, you can get in front of 100+ attendees the night of the event in signage, on the program, the video and more. Look over the sponsorship/donor opportunities to see the benefits and costs of each. We can also get creative if you have an idea of how you’d like to be involved, just let us know! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Community Event Coordinator Carver-Scott Humane Society is seeking a single volunteer to coordinate our community outreach events. In this role, you will identify community events that support the CSHS mission to raise awareness of our mission, recruit and coordinate volunteers to staff the events and prepare marketing materials for the events. We have a few events we actively participate in each year and are looking to expand our presence in the community. This is a great role for people who like planning, working with people and want to expand their PR & Marketing experience. We ask for a minimum of a year commitment.

Fundraising Committee Volunteers and Coordinator Carver-Scott Humane Society is looking for dynamic volunteers to join and help lead our fundraising efforts. To date, CSHS has been successful via events, social media fundraising, and annual direct mail campaigns. We are looking for individuals capable of organizing and leading fundraising events, and someone who would like to co-chair the committee. CSHS is in need of these volunteers to increase our fundraising efforts as we consider building or renovating a shelter building. Experience with capital campaigns and grant writing a plus. New ideas are welcome.

Volunteer Coordinator We are looking for someone to build a strong and vital volunteer program. Fresh new ideas are welcome to enable CSHS to attract new volunteers, implement introductory training, as well as improving our volunteer retention and recognition. This is a great opportunity for a peopleoriented person to make significant contribution that will enhance our mission of connecting animals in need with people who care. Much of this work can be accomplished from home, and the estimated time commitment would be anywhere from 2 to 6 hours a week.

If you are interested in helping the animals and meeting new friends, you can fill out a volunteer application online at www.carverscotths.org. Alternately, you can download the volunteer form and email it to [email protected] or mail it to us (see page 2 for our address). Another option is to call our volunteer line at 952-368-3553 (line 4), and a volunteer will call you back.

...........Thank You for your Donations........... For the last few years, CSHS volunteers have manned the Brat Food Stand at Cub Foods in Minnetonka. Thank you to all the hungry animal-lovers who dropped $480 into our donation jar during the fourday event over July 4th. Thank you to Cub Foods for their support.

The Pleasant Valley 4-H Club of Carver County made 13 dog and cat beds for CSHS. The pet beds were distributed to our foster homes to make life more comfortable for the animals while they wait to find their forever homes. Minnesota Valley Electric Co-op awarded Carver-Scott Humane Society a $2,000 grant for purchasing microchips.

Savage City Liquor held a May month long fundraising drive for donations just at their cash register. They raised and donated $641 and a few dog items. This yearʼs donations far exceeded last the 2014 total. A huge thank you goes out to the generous 21 donors who helped us raise over $1,400 on Give Local America Day through website, email and facebook efforts! FURRY FOOTNOTES • SUMMER 2015

ADOPT•ME

To view all our animals up for adoption, visit our website at www.carverscotths.org.

ESMERALDA likes wand toys and to bat ice cubes. When you come home, she door greets, ankle rubs, and follows you. Esmeralda lets you place her in your lap. Sheʼll look forward to petting and brushing. She puts her paws over your hands and gives you kitty kisses. Afterwards, she wants to sit close to you. She is okay being picked up and carried for a couple minutes. She is a friendly, quiet cat born in January of 2012.

DELILAH is house trained and has the run of the house causing no problems, so she isnʼt in a crate when the foster family is at work. She door greets, follows you everywhere, does okay in the car and on a leash. This shepherd mix is fine with other dogs and kids. After being a loyal, very friendly, affectionate dog for eight years, the folks didnʼt want to care for their sonʼs dog, now that the boy was in college. Delilah is looking for love.

Affectionate JEM jumps into your lap when you sit and stays as long as you pet him. He is an abandoned, friendly, young male born around Aug. 2013. He wants attention so he likes to be brushed, be picked up, be cradled like a baby, and to be carried. You and Jem will have enjoyment playing with interactive cat toys. He is initially shy of new folks and likes calm, respectful children. Jem is waiting for your call.

Money canʼt buy love, but it can come close. CARMEN would be your very friendly, affectionate companion after you adopted her. She wants to snuggle under the covers at night. Carmen jumps into your lap when you sit, likes being picked up, wants petting and tummy rubs. She is crate and house trained. She is smart, calm and sweet. Carmen was born in 2007 and needs a home that will manage her diabetes.

When you sit, friendly LIZZY with hop into your lap and keep you warm during our cold winters. She enjoys being petted, picked up, carried and brushed. Her favorite toys are cat dancer and a ball in a track. She is easy going, calm and quiet. If you are late for dinner Lizzy will let you know. She is good with dogs, most cats, and calm kids over age 8. She was born in 2006.

Looking for a dog to warm your lap while watching TV? Consider 9 lb. SIMON, a Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix born February of 2012. This little bundle of puppy activity is smart, quiet, and affectionate. Simon enjoys being carried, does well in the car. He gets along with dogs, adults, calm girls over 14, is shy of new folks, and hasnʼt met cats. He is house and indoor crate trained. He needs a yard with a fence. His past senior citizen ownerʼs health declined and Simon was surrendered.
