BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT | WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 5, 2012 [after Sunday with PJoy "Being In the Spirit" I knew!!!] As a believer / Christian we can become very much self & inner focused we have issues ourselves that we know we need help and healing on its natural to care for yourself on a plane you first put the mask on yourself then you help a child there are TWO truths here you need to be healed & whole so you can help others on your path to healing you also need to be helping others along the way Mark 16:15 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” some versions actually leave out parts of this passage and others say “the best manuscripts don’t include verses 9-20 [NIV missing 40 versesMark11:26] 1. 2. 3.
I looked into what “best” means - get this: it means the manuscripts on the best paper and the neatest writing. what they don’t tell you is many of these manuscripts leave the space for the missing verses the majority and the oldest manuscripts do in fact contain verses 9-20 For fun let’s read Mark 16 starting with verse 8 and end where they say it ends
Mark 16:8 8 So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. lets look back at Mark 16:17-18 • a believer is supst to cast out devils!
• we have been duped as Christians to thinking this only means casting out demons from people that are possessed by an evil spirit (think running around naked, cutting themselves, frothing at the mouth, cursing in another voice) • do you realize delivering people from the power of evil spirits includes more than just unsaved people? • do you realize that you as a Christian can be controlled in your thoughts by an evil spirit and most of us ARE on a daily, hourly & minute by minute basis? • if you are feeling anything right now that is not love toward me for that last statement its an indication that something isn’t happy that I just shed some light into a dark untouched area. • when you recognize someone is trying to help you thru loving you - you don’t feel angry you feel a sense of security and warmth • this past week I’ve personally ministered love & truth and have seen 3 manifestations of anger & confusion & un-acceptance in Christians • the Holy Spirit is a gentleman and if you don’t want to be free don’t allow anything into that protected area • some say, “christians can’t be controlled by evil only the Holy Spirit” - as they speak evil words about their boss today which is considered murder according to Jesus Himself MAIN POINT: it should be a normal thing to cast out evil spirits from their control in humans, speak in tongues, not be afraid or hurt by serpents or deadly things & lay hands on the sick for recovery transition: your purpose here on earth is so much bigger than yourself - its about the people around you - you are here to manifest GOD and His ways to everyone around you. Show love, break chains, free the suffering, heal the sick, release from torments! Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
TOOLS GIVEN FOR THE TASK let me introduce you to what we know as the gifts of the Spirit 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. 9 gifts of the spirit • every believer is to operate in some of these gifts • its as the Spirit wills - you can’t go to a class on Prophecy and become a prophet you can’t just decided to have gifts of healings - they are called GIFTS! also don’t confuse a gift with a normal thing we all are given - every Christian has the power to lay hands on the sick, cast out evil spirits & speak in tongues the list above includes - gifts of healings, different kinds of tongues, faith - these are special tools above and beyond the normal of each thing we all have • for example - to each one is given a measure of faith - you can build that faith by hearing God’s word - but the gift of faith here would be better called “Special Faith” • I’m looking at someone in the eyes and they begin to manifest something other than a fruit of the spirit - I, the believer have the authority to command that thing to come up and out and lose them - this is a normal daily routine thing • but lets say there’s something stronger there than needs more than something I, on my own can just believe for - VWOOOM: all the sudden something drops down inside of me and I KNOW THE POWER IS THERE
to command that thing out of someone - Special Faith just dropped down into my spirit as The Holy Spirit decided. so you can see we each, as believers have been given special gifts to do what Mark 16 says to do. • we don’t all have all 9 gifts - only Jesus had the Spirit without measure • but collectively as the body of Christ we have all 9 gifts available at the right time to do the job we need to do - enforce the kingdom of God! we don’t have time tonight to cover too specifically each gift but I want you to notice just for fun that the 9 gifts can be grouped into 3’s and each group relates to a different person in the Godhead. The Father Thinks (mind) • word of wisdom: takes the present and ties it to the future, telling you the best info • word of knowledge: takes the present & ties it to the past, telling you the best info • discerning of spirits: understands & sees the work of the enemy in something The Son is the Word (vocal) • prophecy: new testament form is for edification and building up - not future telling • tongues: sign to unbelievers, speaks out the mind of God supernaturally • interpretation of tongues: brings the message from unknown to known and edifies The Holy Spirit Does (power) • faith: executes God’s will & can step in when the person doesn’t have own faith • miracles: can create missing organs, beyond just healing • healings: healing for someone else that doesn’t understand the word - disease transition: we are told by Jesus to do works that set people free from the enemy, we are given 9 tools that can come upon us as He wills when they are needed - but all of this has a prerequisite for the believer TWOFOLD WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT there is so much confusion among Christians on the subject of speaking in tongues, the gifts of the spirit, casting out demons, etc - I don’t have time to show you the fallacy in each argument - I may tease you a little with something (Jesus told the Syrophoenician woman that casting out demons was not for the unsaved but the Children of God) that to make you think but I mainly have to simply show you truth.
I say all of this to encourage you simply to tell the voices arguing with you in your head right now using the things someone taught you in the past that you can’t even back up with scripture to SHUT UP IN JESUS NAME - say, “excuse me voice in my head, I’m busy right now getting washed by the water of the Word, so shut up, leave me alone, go to your dry place! now I said!” there are two works for every human being that are distinct in scripture - they must be done in order as the second requires the first - and you can have the first and not accept the 2nd. indwelling of the Spirit baptism or filling with the Spirit INDWELLING - the first experience available to all Ezekiel 36:26-27 26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. John 14:17 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. both these verses are telling us what was going to happen in the new birth experience in the new testament. God was taking out the old heart of stone and giving us a new one and putting His Spirit in us so the truth is Jesus doesn’t come live in our hearts He’s up in heaven talking God’s ear off on our behalf the HS is what is inside us
I like to explain it like this - in children’s church I had this canning jar all spray painted orange and black and it looked dirty • I would say this dirty old jar is the person that hasn’t received Jesus as their Lord • they can still hold liquid and do their job but they are dirty and not acceptable in their current state • I would place this car into a bucket as it was accepting Jesus • then I would bring out a new clean sparkly jar - no more dirt, junk or filth • I would then hold up a pitcher of water labeled Holy Spirit and pour it in the jar, filling it up partially. • this represents accepting Jesus as Lord and becoming a child of God • you are made new, cleaned up, forgiven and the Spirit comes to dwell in you to help you BAPTISM - the second experience available to only believers John 7:38-39 38 He that believes on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Spirit was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) Jesus was giving them a glimpse of what every believer would have the opportunity to receive they that believe on him SHOULD receive the Holy Spirit out of their belly (inner most being, spirit, real you) will flow rivers of living water back to our new clean jar that has the Holy Spirit living in them • let pick our jar back up now - now our jar is receiving the 2nd work of the HS • take the pitcher of water and pour more into the jar but this time I let it overflow out of the jar and fall all over my table and onto the floor, getting the carpet, my shoes, my shirt - everything around it wet!
• this is a picture of the power of the Holy Spirit in the 2nd work coming out of the believer - affecting the world around them! transition: are you sure there are two separate works? I was told when I received Jesus I got the HS and that’s all I needed. also are you sure this is still for today? I was told this all ceased with the last apostle TWO SEPARATE WORKS FOR TODAY? the idea some have taught saying tongues is not for today is a doctrine of devils and hangs on the thinnest string of evidence that is easily cut down I will simply give you a word picture in your mind: the people that lived during the time of the apostles were all in their own areas one day praying quietly to themselves in other tongues to build up their spirits as Paul taught them. they were making rugs, washing camels, building barns - all speaking in tongues when ALL THE SUDDEN - the last apostle died... Let’s look at a passage that illustrates beautifully the 2nd, separate work of the HS... Acts 19:1-6 1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. verse 5 is the first work - baptized in the name of Jesus " (baptism isn’t always submerging in water - there are many in NT)
verse 6 is the second work - baptized in the Holy Spirit here’s the key I want you to see - its a 2nd work that is needed and the evidence of the baptism of the HS is SPEAKING IN TONGUES • 1 Cor 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than you all • 1 Cor 14:4 He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself (builds up) • 1 Cor 14:14 If I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays... • Mark 16:17 these signs shall follow them that believe...they will speak with new tongues Who in this room wants to get baptized with the Holy Spirit • filled an endued with POWER from on high • supernatural help • supernatural power to crush the enemy there are two ways people are filled - one they receive it on their own but usually its thru the laying on of hands the first outpouring in Acts was special - I personally have never seen it happen that way since after that day it was simply the people that were filled prayed for the people that weren’t filled >>>>> come up to receive
