hurston County Public Works invites you to the Less is More Film Fest, October 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Olympia Film Society. The festival will highlight local and national efforts to reduce our impact on the environment and bring attention to the many ways we can all make a difference. Feature length films and shorts will cover topics on everything from food waste to clothing recycling to living a “zero-waste” lifestyle. There will be raffle prizes throughout the evening.

Program Schedule Just Eat It • 6:45 p.m. • 54 min Filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of waste from farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on discarded food. What they find is truly shocking.

Thurston Food Rescue PSA • 7:40 p.m. • 10 min This short PSA highlights the Thurston Food Rescue program. With one in six families in Thurston County wondering where their next meal is coming from, Thurston Food Rescue aims to help those in need and keep edible food from going to the landfill.

Exploring Alternatives 8:05 p.m.• 10 min In this video we meet Mailyne, a single mom who has adopted a zero waste lifestyle for almost 1 year to reduce the amount of garbage she sends to landfills and to be part of a sustainable future

Garbage Angels 8:15 p.m. • 5 min A glimpse into the social interaction of objects in a garbage dump. This is a world where the ugly becomes beautiful.

Flip Flotsam 8:20 p.m. • 30 min Flip Flotsam is a Kenyan short made in association with the Kenyan WIldlife Service. It follows the working life of the ubiquitous flipflop from production in a Monbasa factory to disposal and eventual rebirth as children’s toys.

Love Letter to Food 9:05 p.m. • 5 min

The results of a study conducted by the University of Minnesota’s Food Policy Research Center on food waste in the U.S. are presented as a love letter to food in this playful video.

No Impact Man • 9:00 p.m. • 93 min No Impact Man tells the story of author Colin Beavan, who went completely “green,” giving up virtually all of the comforts of modern living -- electricity, gas-powered transportation, shipped food and public waste disposal. The cameras capture the toll this wellintentioned, year-long project takes on Beavan’s wife and baby daughter, as well as the ways it brings this family closer together.
