Project Report Project title:

River Basin Management in Lithuania

Recipient NGO:

Zvejone Environmental Club/Lithuanian Green Movement

Objectives: Describe if the objectives of the project have been achieved. Comment on the main reasons for divergences, if there are any. To organize RW activities in Lithuania, to involve new participants and teachers, to expand and strengthen the RW network in Lithuania, to inform and involve the ministry in the implementation of the activities. In order to achieve the objectives, the following activities were organized: 1

Students competition (organising, prizes, evaluation costs), 01 September-20 November 2017

2

Two-day River Watch workshop for teachers (lectors, overnight stays, catering)

3

Preparations of River watch video course (with a possibility to add subtitles in other Baltic languages afterwards)

4

Reprinting the "The Nearby Rivers" guidebooks, 300 copies

Target groups: describe what kind of people that have been influenced by the project and in what way. How were women affected? Were some groups influenced in a negative way? Was the target group involved in the project work - if not, why? Comment on divergences from the plan. How many people have been involved in the project? How many people have been reached by the project?

Biology and chemistry teachers, students and everyone who is interested in research on streams and water quality. Scientists, experts conducted workshop activities and evaluated the works submitted to the competition. The implementation of the project involved both women and men. During the implementation of the project, equal opportunities were ensured to all entities, participating in the project, in all project activities. Both men and women were treated equally, regardless of gender, in outsourcing translation services and in the project management team. Co-operation between the fund-raising and your own organisation: Describe how this cooperation has worked out. Have there been any problems or divergences? Cooperation with CCB was smooth, no problems have emerged.

Activities: Describe the activities of the project and their present condition. Comment on important divergences from the original plan. Include copies of materials produced during the implementation phase. 2

Description of the Activity

Outputs and their quantification

Students competition (organising, prizes, evaluation costs), 01 September-20 November 2017. The competition was organized in cooperation with Klaipėda University, Biology Department of Vytautas Magnus University, Lithuanian centre of non-formal youth education, and ecological club Žvejonė. Students investigated rivers and streams. The main task of the research competition was to analyse the water quality of water bodies (streams, rivers). Methods used: biological method (e.g. determination of water quality class, microscopic examination of water samples, etc.), chemical method (e.g. water sample pollution test, assessment of pollutants, etc.), physical properties of water (e.g. water temperature, colour, smell, transparency, etc.). The winners performed biological, chemical and physical tests, made a photo fixation of the work, described the research. Results: RW school network was expanded and strengthened in Lithuania; 4 institutions cooperated when organizing this competition; The methodology of the research on streams was tested;

Rules of the competition, Annex No. 1. List of the participants of the competition, Annex No. 2, 52 educational institutions and 54 pedagogues, about 1080 students. The competition was organized by 4 institutions. The work of the winners of the competition is presented in Annex No. 3.

Two-day River Watch workshop for teachers (lectors, overnight stays, catering). The workshop was organized in cooperation with Klaipėda University, Biology Department of Vytautas Magnus University, Lithuanian centre of non-formal youth education, and ecological club Žvejonė. During the course of the workshop, invertebrates were investigated in the streams, samples were collected, recorded, and work with microscopes took place in the laboratory. The workshop was conducted in a very interesting way, birds were observed on the way to the river, where invertebrates were collected, and the biologist was telling about the plants near the water at the same time. The feedback from participants was great, no monotony, very intense and classes were conducted by 3 specialists at the same time complementing each another. Feedback from participants showed that such training in the nature by the river is really necessary, from taking the sample to testing it and releasing. Preparations of River watch video course for water of bad quality and water of good quality. Video tutorials for the research on streams were prepared to upload to YouTube, in order to engage children and young people in water quality testing. The text was prepared, it was filmed, animated, edited. English subtitles were used for Lithuanian text.

Agenda of the workshop, Annex No. 4 List of the participants of the workshop, Annex No. 5, 25 participants. Workshop photos, Annex No. 6.

Reprinting the ‘The Nearby Rivers’ guidebooks, 300 copies The publication of the national conference ‘Research Activities in Environmental Education 2017’ was republished on the 9th of March. 200 participants. The publications were distributed to the participants of the competition - teachers and pupils, and for 25 participants of the workshop, a total of 75 pcs.

Distributed publication - 300 copies.

Timetable: Describe if the project has been implemented according to the original timetable. Comment on important divergences. The project was completed on time; no deviations from the original schedule, i.e. 27 December 2017.

Budget and financing: Comment on if there have been any divergences and/or problems. Budgetary deviations include up to 10 percent between the lines. Gender – Present the goal for the work with gender in your organisation. Describe in what way the project has contributed to reach this goal, including the development of equality of opportunity between women and men. Present how many women as well as how many men that have been involved in the project. The implementation of the project involved both women and men. During the implementation of the project, equal opportunities were ensured to all entities, participating in the project, in all project activities. Both men and women were treated equally, regardless of gender, in outsourcing translation services and in the project management team. The project activities involved ten people, i. e. six women and four men. Local take-over: Outline also a plan for how your project as well as your organisation will continue to survive when the financial support from CCB/SSNC/SIDA will end What steps have been taken to finance the running expenses in the long run? Project continuity does not require a lot of funds; activities were carried out on a voluntary basis, thus volunteers will ensure the continuity of the project. Without the financial support, the project will be implemented in a smaller extent, on the spot. Evaluation: Comment on the outcome of the project in quantitative as well as qualitative terms compared with the goals and objectives set up. To measure the progress/success of the project, compare the goals and objectives set up beforehand with the outcome/results of the project. 4

Project promoters have achieved the set objectives and results.

The results of the project: RW network in Lithuania was expanded and strengthened; During the organization of the activities, it has been collaborated with 5 different institutions: universities, NGOs, public institutions. A water quality research competition was organized, new participants were attracted to the RW network; A video movie, engaging children and young people in RW research, was created; The methodology needed for teachers, pupils and anyone interested in water research was distributed. Follow-up- report on the activities which have been animated by the project in present and for the future. The continuity of the project: - A water quality research competition was organized; the results of the research were presented to the local authorities and the participants would be obliged to prepare an article about their research in the local media; - Two-day workshop for teachers - chemical and biological water analysis; - We would very much like to teach public relations to teachers during the training, and explain why it is important, why it is necessary to write articles about researches. - Collaborate and interact with other RW network participants, collaborate with countries that have common pools, common camps, trainings; - We would suggest organizing research competitions in other countries as well, because the budget is relatively small, and the benefits are really high, many participants, a lot of research; - In the future we would like to prepare a map in which we would mark all the schools involved in RW activities, just like points;
