Job Description Thurston Economic Development Council Job Title:

Finance Assistant (part-time)

Reports To: Finance Manager Organization The Thurston Economic Development Council (EDC) is the state-designated lead economic development organization in Thurston County. The EDC is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization governed by a 25-member Board of Directors, and is the parent organization to the Thurston Economic Development Council Center for Business & Innovation (CB&I), a 501(c)(3) non-profit. The EDC/CB&I’s combined mission is to create a vital and sustainable economy throughout the county and region that supports the livelihood and values of our residents. We do this by:     

Connecting local businesses with experts and resources that help them remain competitive; Supporting the creation of new businesses through training, advising and coaching; Creating and delivering strategic messages that attract new investment to our community; Working with our community partners to enhance our collective prosperity and encourage our economic future; and Participating with regional partners to ensure that Thurston County plays an appropriate role on the regional economic stage.

The EDC sponsors the statewide Procurement Technical Assistance Program (PTAC) which provides government contracting assistance and training to Washington businesses. The CB&I sponsors the Washington Center for Women in Business (WCWB), SCORE, TuneUp, ScaleUp and other programs that provide business start-up, growth, turn-around, and succession training, advising, technical assistance, coaching, and referral. Co-located with the EDC/CB&I is the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), sponsored by South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC), the SBA and Washington State University. The SBDC provides management and technical assistance with a focus on established businesses. Together, these programs provide a robust and deep approach to supporting, growing and expanding the entrepreneurial environment of Thurston County and the regions we support. Position Objective Working closely with the Finance Manager, the Finance Assistant provides administrative and accounting support to the organization’s finance office. Some of the position duties include data entry, invoicing, grant and contract report generation and the processing of daily checks. Other responsibilities include tracking funding sources and uses for multiple programs, tracking credit card spending, reconciliation of account balances, and fielding calls to the finance office. 1

Duties and Responsibilities          

Performs QuickBooks data entry Sorts finance-related mail daily, adhering to internal tracking and processing controls Accurately files bills, invoices and customer payments Ensures that contract files are complete, up-to-date and well organized Processes credit card transactions and reconciles account balances Records and tracks event registration and payments Performs computer functions using MS Word and Excel software Assists in the accurate recordkeeping of fiscal documents Fields phone calls and responds to customer service inquiries directed to the finance office Other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Knowledge           

Basic accounting knowledge Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel; QuickBooks knowledge preferred Strong data entry skills Detail oriented with strong organization skills Independent, accountable and reliable Ability to multi-task and adapt well in a deadline critical environment Self-starter with the ability to prioritize and implement projects Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive matters professionally and with discretion Professional, customer service-oriented and comfortable interacting with a diverse clientele Strong verbal and written communication skills Teamwork mindset with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

Education and Experience Requirement 1 year of related work experience, or the equivalent in education Pay Range and Schedule $12-$13 per hour, based on experience. 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday mornings preferred.
