Amber Valley Sport in the Spotlight - Q&A Each newsletter we will be doing a short Q&A with an Amber Valley athlete, coach or volunteer to showcase the great work and dedication of people involved in sport in the area, this time we focus on………. Belper Marlin Swimming Club, Jon Haynes talks to us about hoping to inspire future Olympians Q1. Can you tell us a little bit about Belper Marlin Swimming Club? Belper Marlin was formed in 1977 and provides competitive swimming for children of all ages alongside learn to swim programmes and masters section for adults. The club has its base at Belper Leisure Centre where its main squad sessions are held but they are truly an Amber Valley wide outfit offering learn to swim programmes at Alfreton Leisure Centre and William Gregg VC Leisure Centre in Heanor.

Q2. Belper Marlin pride themselves on being a family orientated club how do you ensure this ethos is portrayed by everyone involved in the club? The club regularly hosts galas as well as attending competitions and this requires support from parents as well as coaches to ensure the children get the best possible experience. Earlier this year we raised money for a charity set up by a former Marlin to raise money for neurological units after he suffered life changing injuries himself. This is a great example of how the club is about more than just competitive swimming.

Q3. How have this years Rio Olympic games inspired young swimmers at Belper Marlin? We recently finished off 6 months of competitive galas with our summer sprints presentation evening where the children were thrilled to receive bronze, sliver & gold medals just like their idols at the Olympics and Paralympics in the summer. We hope to one day see a former Marlin swimming for Team GB!

Jon finished off by saying if you enjoy swimming and want to get involved (and maybe win a few medals) – look no further than Belper Marlin Swimming Club! Contact the club at www.belpermarlin.co.uk
