ƃenue guidŐ Looking to the Future, Walking Through the Past: Key West’s Historic Wedding Venues BY SARAH THOMAS

Key West has been on the map for destination weddings since the 1990s. As an island in the “American Caribbean,” it is a desirable site for beach weddings, yet there are incredible offerings at historic destinations. “Garden weddings,” as many reference them, are not only naturally stunning, but also less subject to the mercurial nature of the beach: less windy, more canopied, and often, quiet for the ceremony. Key West lends itself to destination weddings that offer not just natural beauty, but history.

ne of the most recognizable properties in Key West is the Hemingway House, a historic home that evokes the romantic literary legacy of Hemingway’s time in Key West. The Hemingway House opened to the public in 1961 as a museum, but weddings didn’t gain popularity until the 1990s. Says Alexa Morgan, Wedding and Events Coordinator: “I think that Hemingway’s presence brings everyone around the world here, and then the grounds, with the lush gardens and the history, really sell it. We get a lot of literature buffs that want that historical factor.” Brides and grooms can indulge their literary interests: “I’ve had couples do library cards as their place cards, and they featured old typewriters that we have for rental, and it was important that the house was the background,” Morgan says. Hemingway’s working typewriter is featured in the studio above the garden. The Hemingway House offers a garden space for a cigar lounge, and cocktail hour takes place by the pool. Jessica Rodenbeck, Assistant Manager of the property, says: “We’ve had a lot of people that have done surprise proposals here, where we incorporate a book, when she thinks she’s just doing a tour.” They also offer Hemingway look-a-like officiants for true fans.

IM AGES BY ©

FR E A S P H OTO GR A P H Y

The Hemingway House hosts around 150 weddings a year, though capacity is at a relatively small number of guests: 100. The house hosts non-private small weddings during the day, while the property remains open to the public, and it hosts private weddings in the evening. One wedding in particular was a vintage circus theme, replete with colorful tents and twinkling lights. But elephants weren't the primary guests. Says Rodenbeck, “The cats help. They come to party too. They’re wedding crashers.”

he Audubon House has a long legacy in Key West as the home of master wrecker John Geiger, a friend of John James Audubon. Built in 1830, it became the Audubon House in 1958 when it was purchased by the Wolfson family. It came to house the lithographs and paintings of Audubon, who visited the property in his 1832 expedition to the Florida Keys, in search of the flamingo for his Birds of America. The property boasts “Lush gardens among the best in the Florida Keys, and guests are invited to wander the paved brick pathways among orchids, bromeliads, rare tropical palms, and crotons.” Laura McKenna, the Events Coordinator, credits the home on Whitehead and Greene for much of the resurgence of historic restorations in Key West: “It was almost demolished and turned into a gas station. But then it helped start the restoration movement, when the Wolfsons opened it to the public. I think we really started to grow it in the 90s for events and weddings. We opened to the public in 1960, but that was not the focus then—but it certainly is now, and now Key West has become such a wedding destination.” McKenna credits the atmosphere of the grounds for most of the wedding bookings, as well as their excellent caterers and bands. The property also can accommodate up to 250 people. Something not included on the caterer’s menu are some of the culinary obscurities from Geiger’s tenure in the 1830s: “The tongue of a flamingo was a delicacy back then, and it is mentioned a lot.” The cookhouse features a taxidermied flamingo, hung by its feet and ready for preparation. While the Audubon House has hosted “a pink flamingothemed wedding,” McKenna laughs, “the brides have asked me to close the door to the cookhouse.” Perhaps the most charming aspect of the Audubon House is the prospect of spontaneity. “Sometimes people come off a cruise ship and do an hour rental, and get married. We cater in champagne.” The grounds even inspire locals to marry on a whim: “People walked in the other day that lived here locally and just wanted to get married. They brought their kids and their officiant—it was a quick 20 minute ceremony.”

merican history buffs could do no better than be married at the former home of 33rd President Harry S. Truman, “The Little White House.” A few short blocks from the “hustle and bustle” of Duval Street, the Little White House is located in the charming residential district of Truman Annex. “Whether it’s an evening wedding under the stars or a daytime party shaded by tall palm trees, the gardens at the Truman Little White House make for a sophisticated and tropical Key West wedding.” An intimate property for wedding parties under a hundred, there are a number of outdoor spaces: “The three lawns surrounding Truman’s winter retreat can be used together or individually,” according to the venue’s website. “The front lawn, with tall palms and enormous tropical almond trees forming a garden cathedral, is a favorite location for Key West weddings.” Given the unpredictable nature of a tropical climate, a garden wedding is a safe haven for a Key West bride. Key West’s most famous husband, Ernest Hemingway was similarly unpredictable. Yet, in the words of property Assistant Manager Rodenbeck: “Hemingway has the history of being a hopeless romantic in his novels, and in the evening it really gets that vibe here. I think he was always looking for that ‘real, true love.’” For those looking to make the “real, true love” they’ve found official, Key West historic houses are the ideal destination.

BY KAY HARRIS

FOR THE

UNIQUE BRIDE WHAT DO beautiful actresses Zoe Soldana, Olivia Wilde, and Halle Berry have in common, other than their successful acting careers? Each of their loved ones proposed with unique, emerald engagement rings.

16 Florida Keys B R I D A L

U N I Q U E J E W E L RY

Although traditional brides frequently shop for engagement and wedding rings with diamonds, choosing between emerald, marquise, square or oval shapes, other brides want something much more unique that is a reflection of their personality.

1 2

Emeralds are the birthstone for the month of May, and according to the International Gem Society, they are known as “The Jewel of Kings.” Many royals wore emeralds to display their wealth and beauty, none more famous than Cleopatra. 4

According to the Society, emeralds symbolize royalty, wit, eloquence and foresight. They were once thought to help cure a variety of illnesses, including infections, and to guard against various poisons. In mythology, the Society states that they were prized by the Gods and various deities, including Venus, a goddess symbolic of love.

3

There are many reasons to love the soothing, green hues of an emerald, whether May is your birth month or not, but the most prevailing is that the beautiful gems are unique and rare. Choosing your engagement or wedding ring with an emerald rather than the traditional diamond is sure to set you apart from other brides.

6 5

And if you need more incentive to con sider an emerald when ring shopping, take a look at the stunning ring John F. Kennedy Jr. gave to his bride, Jacqueline Bouvier, when he proposed. It’s a gorgeous, one of a kind ring with both a 3 carot diamond and a 3 carot emerald. Fit for royalty indeed. 8

APPLYING FOR A

Marriage License BY KAY HARRIS

A marriage license is required for your marriage to be legally recognized. In Monroe County, the Clerk of Circuit Court is the issuing agent of marriage licenses for the State of Florida. You can register for a marriage license during regular business hours at the courthouses in Key West and Marathon, and at either the Upper Keys government center or the Clerk’s office in Plantation Key. Regulations vary from state to state. In Florida, applicants must be 18 years old to obtain a marriage license. Younger applicants require parental consent, and in certain instances, the consent of a county judge. No matter what your age, both applicants must appear in person when applying for a marriage license. A picture-type ID, including date of birth, is required. If either party has been previously married, the exact date of the death, divorce or annulment must be provided. Bring a copy of your divorce decree with you at the time of application. The state of Florida has recognized same-sex marriages since June 2015, and the

18 Florida Keys B R I D A L

U.S. Supreme Court assured federal recognition of same-sex marriage throughout the country. The process of completing marriage license paperwork takes about 15 minutes. There is no waiting period for out-of-state residents, or for Florida residents who provide proof of completing an approved premarital class. Otherwise, it is a three day waiting period for Florida residents. A marriage license costs $86 – and there is a discount for Florida residents who provide proof of completing the premarital class ($61.00). A marriage license must be used within 60 days of issuance. In Florida, regularly ordained clergy, judges, the Clerk, deputy clerks of the Circuit Court, and state of Florida notaries may perform marriages. The person who performs a marriage ceremony must complete and return the marriage license to the Clerk of Court within 10 days, where it will be recorded in the Official Records. A certified copy is returned to the

newlyweds by mail, and the original license is maintained in the Office of Vital Statistics in Jacksonville, FL. The process usually takes around three weeks.

Rainbow, Bright

A quick glance at Pinterest will bring up dozens upon dozens of color choices, hot trends and new combinations for anyone planning their wedding this year. The trick, of course, is to take what you see and love and make it fit your Keys wedding venue. Whether you want to use any color of the rainbow or all the colors of the rainbow, your colors should be a reflection of who you are. Considering that the dresses, suits, flowers, decorations, cake, tablecloths, etc. will all be decorated in your wedding colors, choose wisely!

COLORS OF THE RAINBOW Perhaps a bit trite, but still a safe bet, incorporating the colors of the rainbow into your Keys wedding can be easily done and will look terrific for any couple. Whether you are making a statement or just love bright, bold colors, the sky is the limit if you aren’t limited in your color choices. COLORS OF THE SEA Seafoam greens mixed with pale blues have long been favorites in the Keys, reflecting and honoring the location. For 2018, consider using several greens together, not just one or two, or several blues together. Aqua and dusty blue have replaced the brighter colors this year in popularity, and are easy to mix and match with other shades to create your perfect, island wedding.

BLUSHING BRIDE Blush pink is a perennial favorite for weddings, and can be easily paired with other colors. For a spicier, trendier look, pair the blush pink this year with sage green, dark navy, slate blue, lavender or plum to update the trend for 2018.

S U N S E T C E L E B R AT I O N The Keys know how to celebrate sunsets, and copying the colors of this gorgeous nightly display is a fresh, fun idea for 2018. The colors are vibrant - a variety of oranges, pinks, and yellows- and if you want to throw in an homage to the famous “green flash” occasionally seen by a lucky few, toss in a shade of moss or emerald. COLOR OF THE YEAR The official Pantone Color of the Year for 2018 is Ultra Violet, a perfect match for a Keysy wedding. The deep hue matches perfectly with any other shade of purple, from lavender to amethyst, and can be paired perfectly with many other colors, including shades of green, gold, and blue.

BY KAY HARRIS

The Perfect Moment

HINTS FOR HIRING A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

You’ve already decided to hold your wedding, one of the biggest events of your life, in the Keys, so the rest of the decisions you need to make now should be super easy, right?

photos and video you have of your beautiful day are irreplaceable keepsakes and the most important reminders of your wedding day. Selecting a photographer is an essential element of your wedding planning.

Well, maybe not super easy, but there’s no reason to fret. There are numerous wedding experts to help you throughout the Keys, and with some simple hints and tips, you should find the planning experience to be relatively pain free.

To help you in making your selection, following are some helpful hints offered by Keys’ photographers Rob O’Neal, Carol Tedesco and Michael Freas of Freas Photography. 1 . LO O K AT W E B S I T E S A N D P O R T F O L I O S

work you like, it can also help you decide what style of photographs you want taken. Do you like candid shots? Or posed photos? Knowing what kind of photos you want taken will help you narrow your choices down, said Freas. 2 . LO O K AT R E V I E W S A N D A S K FOR REFERRALS BUT DON’T DEPEND ON THEM.

O’Neal said there are times when venues, caterers and photographers are working together in a mutually beneficial referral system, so be wary. So, even if they have good reviews online, the type of photos they take and your own rapport with them is

far more important than listening to someone else’s recommendation. 3. MEET IN PERSON.

Having a rapport with your wedding photographer is a must, according to all three photographers, and there’s no better way to tell than to meet in person. Tedesco says that while every photographer has his or her own unique photographic style, from “reality” to “enhanced reality” to completely fairy-tale glamorized, couples need to be sure that they are getting a photographer whose sensibilities compliment their own.

“Once, after meeting with a prospective client, and recognizing that they really would be happier with a more glamorized finished product than I offer, I recommended they hire another local photographer. They said they wanted to stick with me because I cried when they told me their story. Not that crying was a very professional thing to do. It wasn’t at all. But if you’d heard their story, you would have cried too!” she said. 4 . T H I N K A B O U T W H E R E YO U W A N T YO U R P H OTO S TA K E N .

To get a good beach shot, “you have to get up very early in the morning to get to the beach at sunrise. Otherwise, you are contending with crowds plus the lighting won’t be good,” said Freas.

THREE wedding FOOD

TRENDS 28 Florida Keys B R I D A L

FOOD TRENDS

PERFECT Trends on the mainland have to travel across the ocean to get to the Keys, so you’d think they’d be slow arriving, but the Conch Republic is a surprisingly cosmopolitan little island nation. Our wedding feasts serve up plenty of the same food trends touted in bridal magazines. Of course, the Keys also brings its own unique flavor to the table. Not every current food trend belongs in a destination wedding. For example, baconthemed dishes, though a foodie staple, make little sense in a place famous for its fresh seafood. Likewise, dishes reflecting a couple’s ethnic background or heritage may be lost in translation against an island backdrop. It’s a Keys wedding, after all, so people expect a taste of “Floribbean” cuisine and a sunny, casual vibe. We compared national trends in wedding foods to the experience of local caterers, event managers, and bakers. A few wedding food trends stood out as perfect for a Keys destination wedding. Which ones will you dish up on your special day?

for

INTERACTIVE APPETIZER STATIONS

Think sushi-making station or taco bar. Karli Thurston, Banquet and Events Manager for the Key West Marriot Beachside, has overseen hundreds of wedding feasts. Thurston definitely notes this trend at the Marriot Beachside. But here, she notes, it’s done with a Caribbean flavor. “I describe it as soul food with a Latino twist, which means delicious!’ Thurston continues. “Active stations are my personal favorites! Guests walk up to a full array of fresh ingredients and tell the chef exactly what they want prepared. It’s a great way to interact, personalize, and jazz up dinner service. One of the Marriot Beachside’s most popular offerings is a whole roasted mojo suckling pig. We display the succulent pig on a carving station, with a chef carving it right in front of the guest!” Chef David Fuhrman, owner of Great Events Catering, concurs. Food stations are sizzling hot, and perfect for the Keys. His company puts strong emphasis on seasonality & regionality, celebrating a sense of place for that perfect island destination wedding.” Says Furhman, station-work gets people up close and personal with their food. People really have fun with it. Made-to-order homemade guacamole is always a hit, especially here in the Keys where people want that LatinoCaribbean vibe. One of my favorites is a grouper carving station. People get to see the fish they’re eating, they know it came from right here, and it makes it so much more personal.” LATE NIGHT BITES

Chef Fuhrman points out another national wedding food trend popular in the Keys: late night snacks. Your guests build up an appetite dancing and drinking, and a quick bite or an extra final course served later in the evening helps keep the party going.

OPPOSITE PAGE:

Mini Cuban Pork Sliders. A popular food trend served after the party for a late night bite.

“Nowadays, people definitely want food that lasts all night long instead of just the first three hours. We often do lots of small courses spaced out throughout the evening instead of one big meal, or we offer something late into the party. The late night snacks are things like mini sliders, truffle popcorn. Fun finger foods. Sometimes we hand out Cuban sandwich bags

towards the end of a wedding party. It comes with chips and a water, guests can eat it there or take it back to their hotels for later. It’s a nice touch, an extra little gift of appreciation for your loved ones.”

Wedding cake is so much more than dessert. It’s tradition, an attraction, and a spectacle. It’s the wedding food most likely to make its way into everyone’s photos. But many modern newlyweds opt for a casual alternative to a fussy wedding cake. Cupcakes were popular in 2017, or the fancy desert buffet known as a Viennese table. At Keys destination weddings, individual Key lime pies fley off the tables. But in 2018, wedding cakes are making a comeback! Karol Zeled, owner of Cakes by Karol, argues they’ve never gone out of style. A cake can be something classical or a whimsical masterpiece tailored directly from your imagination.” Zeled’s cakes run the gamut from elegantly festive to fun and thematic. Island flavors abound. “I get a lot of requests for Key lime and tropical flavors like piña colada, coconut, and even margarita cake.” CLOCKWISE:

Great Events Catering interactive taco station, local flavor trends: crabcakes with pineapple jicama and wasabi aioli, Marriot Beachside’s whole roasted mojo suckling pig, and a non traditional favorite, a S'mores dessert station.

Nor must cake toppers be the classic bride, groom, and flowers. Cakes by Karol makes creative decorations, including seashells, beach chairs, or even a peacock. “We love a challenge. The more elaborate or 3D shapes are the most fun for us to make.” What’s The Next Big Thing in Wedding Food? Marriot Beachside Event Manager Thurston says, “People are thinking outside the box, being creative and experimenting with the foods they cook and eat. They’re really having fun, flavor-wise, and in their presentation. When you can see the quality, vibrant color and smell of something, it makes it even more appealing and intriguing. After all, you eat with your eyes first! I also believe that people are realizing the importance of their health more and more these days; I see a lot of new fresh ideas on the horizon that cater to more healthconscious diners.” Zeled of Cakes by Karol agrees, “We’re seeing a lot more gluten and dairy free cakes.” Great Events Catering Chef Furhman points out socially-conscious dining as growing in popularity. “We think we’ll see more farm-totable dishes in 2018, a trend that we already saw in 2017. Plus, I picture people continuing to do tapas and family-style meals as opposed to individual courses.” Furhman adds, “Here in the Keys you get people from all walks of life. What they choose to eat is very individual. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter. It’s all about how the food complements your special day spent with your loved ones, and the memories they make together.

Frosted, white, and fluffy are not your only options. Current trends look toward shinier colors and lighter fare. Says Zeled, “I’m seeing a lot of metallic, gold leaf, and bronze. Also, naked cakes—that’s cake with no icing. Instead, cakes are decorated with flowers to match the brides bouquet. Or, lots of people like a hard sugar shell instead of frosting.”

2018’S HOTTEST TRENDS FOR T H E W E D D I N G PA RT Y

A REFLECTION

of YOU

36 Florida Keys B R I D A L

BY KAY HARRIS

A number of hot new trends were introduced at the 2018 bridal fashion shows, not only for the bride, but also for the entire wedding party. The styles show the continued trend towards allowing more freedom in wedding design, allowing the attire to match the personality. If you’re a traditional person, then of course you can have a traditional wedding, but if you have a more daring personality or want something edgier, or on the opposite side, something more glamorous, then go for it! For brides, the hottest trend this year is pants- yes, pants. Whether part of a suit or paired with a long coat or overdress, slim legged pants are all the rage. In addition, long and luxurious princess capes with lacey hoods are replacing more traditional veils, while long bell sleeves are in vogue for brides. Off the shoulder gowns are still all the rage, while feathers are again making a comeback, and dresses in non-traditional pink, blue and even black are still hot. Not to be outdone, grooms' tuxedos and wedding suits have long since progressed from the traditional cummerbund, bow tie and matching pocket square to include a variety of textures and fabrics. Velvet and corduroy are very popular as are brighter colors. Checkered vests have always been popular, but this year checkered coats and pants are becoming more popular. Gray, brown, and black are as popular as ever, but brighter blues and reds are finding their way into grooms’ attire as well. Groomsmen of the bridal party typically match the suits or tuxes of the groom, with various embellishments added, from the vest to the tie to the boutonniere. Bridesmaids, on the other hand, would never match the bride and are getting more and more non-traditional each year. Several years ago, the trends for bridesmaids broke with tradition with non-matching dresses in all different colors. For 2018, think “fashion forward,” with long bell sleeves, off the shoulder gowns, Florals, beading and sequins are not just for formal events but for formal weddings as well. And velvet is just as popular for bridesmaids as it is for groomsmen. Regardless of what your ultimate selection is for you and the members of your bridal party, the most wonderful trend of 2018 for couples getting married is to just be themselves.

5. DON’T PRICE SHOP AND DON’T TRUST W E D D I N G W E B S I T E E S T I M AT E S .

Key West is attractive to so many couples because it’s different, but that is also true of pricing. A lot goes into the estimate depending on time, venue, style of photography, etc. and the Keys tend to be pricier than other cities. Freas said when couples and their families look back at the wedding, it’s not the cake, or the food, or the flowers that tend to make the most lasting memories, but the photos that captured the moments of the day. 6 .
