Flower Expedition Introduction:

Spring is a very popular time for flowers to bloom. Flowers are usually the most eye-catching part of the plant and come in various sizes, shapes, colors, and scents. Because they are so pretty to look at and smell so nice, they attract lots of humans, insects, birds and animals. While humans like to look at flowers because they are pretty, many insects and animals rely on flowers as a source of food, making flowers an important part of our environment.

Challenge:

Go on a flower expedition around your neighborhood or local park. See if you can find a different flower for each of the characteristics listed on the attached worksheet. When you have completed your expedition draw your favorite flower in the box provided.

Are the flowers not in bloom in your area? Try the same checklist with plants. Can you find a big plant? A plant with markings? A plant that’s a shrub?

Extensions: 1. Flowers provide food to many insects, birds and animals. These creatures feed off of the flower and in turn spread the flower’s pollen wherever they go to next. Because they help spread the flower’s pollen they are called “pollinators.” Closely observe some of the flowers you find. Can you see any pollinators paying the flower a visit? 2. A flower may turn into a fruit or vegetable! The seeds from the fruit or vegetable can then grow more plants! Try germinating a seed at home and growing your own fruit or vegetable plant. Some good seeds to use include avocado seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, lima beans, or pinto beans.
