Military personnel honor 9-11 victims with a moment of silence at the Food Bank’s 9-11 Volunteer Day of Service.

Then Navy personnel packed bags of food for children living in poverty who receive food assistance on the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. Other Navy personnel inspected and sorted tons of food drive donations for families in need.

The Food Bank’s Virtual Food Drive is an internet-based technology that allows our supporters to host a food drive online via our website. All you have to do is visit our Virtual Food Drive webpage, and you can purchase food items for the Food Bank securely online with a bank or debit card.

Commenting about the Day of Service, Russell Pierce, 2nd Class Petty Officer, said, “It makes me feel really good, because I wasn’t always in the best position myself, so to be able to give back… to be able to make other people happy, take the stress off other people’s back. It just feels really good.” Military personnel inspect and sort food drive donations.

Girl Scouts will be volunteering at all 17 Albertsons parking lots to help shoppers stuff the buses full of food, and military volunteers will unload the buses at the Food Bank’s warehouse at the end of the food drive.

Girl Scouts collected food at last year’s Stuff the Bus Food Drive. The food drive raised over 16,000 pounds of food!

The Food Bank would like to thank the following corporations and foundations for their generous contributions. The list reflects donations received July through October 2014.

JACOBS & CUSHMAN SAN DIEGO FOOD BANK NEWSLETTER

By holding your food drive online, you’ll be saving the Food Bank the time and resources incurred by a physical food drive. Plus, your donations will help us purchase more of our “most needed” food items, like canned tuna, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, beans and cereals.

The Virtual Food Drive is a great way for individuals to give as well as businesses and civic groups. Many of our corporate and foundation partners create “themed” Virtual Food Drives or conduct competitions to see who can donate the greatest amount of food between departments. The Food Bank can even create specialized pages for your school or business! Then just set a fundraising goal and invite coworkers, friends and family to help you reach it! “I came out here today to get help from the San Diego Food Bank. We were transferred here from South Carolina a month ago, and we were shocked by the high prices. The cost of living is extremely high in San Diego. When we moved here, the Navy increased the housing allotment to cover the extra rent, but it doesn’t cover food. When we moved from South Carolina to San Diego they increased our Basic Housing Allowance but they do not increase my husband’s pay,” explains Edna. Edna’s husband, Duane, is an EN3 Petty Officer Second Class in the Navy and works as an engine mechanic. They have three children. “My youngest is Landon. He’s one year old. Hunter is four years old, and my oldest is Autumn. She’s seven and in the

first grade,” beams Edna as she smiles at Landon. This is Edna’s second time receiving help from the Food Bank. “The first time I came was last month because the only thing I had in the kitchen was a little bit of meat that my neighbor gave me. My husband was on deployment, and my neighbor suggested that I get help from the Food Bank, so I came and got enough food to get us through to payday,” explains Edna. “Despite the increased cost of rent for housing and the price of food out here, my husband’s pay doesn’t go up, so we deal with what we’re given, and the Food Bank helps us a lot. I still have car payments and my car insurance also increased when we moved out here,” says Edna. “I don’t know what we’d do without the San Diego Food Bank,” explains Edna. “I would be forced to feed my children a lot of ramen noodle soup, rice and pasta which isn’t nutritious.”

This holiday season thousands of working-poor families, fixed-income seniors, and low-income military families will rely on the Food Bank to fill their cupboards and put a holiday meal on the table.

“We love coming to this distribution site because we wait in the park for our number to be called, and the children get to play in the playground, and I can meet other military moms which is great for me since we are new to San Diego.”

This year, First 5 San Diego and Wells Fargo Bank are partnering with the Food Bank along with Vons, Stater Bros., FOX5, the Union-Tribune, KyXy 96.5 FM and the San Diego Chargers for our annual Holiday Food Drive which runs throughout November and December.

Edna walks through the food line and she receives tomatoes, asparagus, bell peppers, zucchini, apples, oranges, canned soup, canned meats, canned vegetables, cereal, fruit juice, bread, oatmeal, and rice. As she receives the food, Edna explains how much the assistance helps her family.

There are so many ways you can help the Food Bank feed San Diegans during our Holiday Food Drive: • Host a food drive at your school, business, civic group or religious organization.

“The donations help us out a lot, especially with a family of five living on a limited budget. The Food Bank truly is a blessing for us. We are thankful for all of the donations,” says Edna as she puts the last bag of groceries in her car.

• Donate money securely via the Food Bank’s website. Every $1 donated provides 5 meals to hungry San Diegans. • Volunteer at the Food Bank’s warehouse by registering online.

If you would like to help families like Edna, please support the Food Bank’s Military Initiative. Contact Kaye de Lancey, Director of Development, at 858-863-5129 or KDeLancey@ sandiegofoodbank.org.

• Host a Virtual Food Drive online via the Food Bank’s website. Visit: www.sandiegofoodbank.org/donate/virtual-food-drive • Donate nonperishable food items at Vons and Stater Bros. And Vons is making it even easier to donate. Visit any Vons supermarket in San Diego County, purchase a pre-filled bag of food for $10, and put the bag in our red food drive barrels at the front of the store. If you’re going to the Chargers game on Nov. 23rd at Qualcomm Stadium, please bring canned food items for the annual Chargers Food Drive, or look for our Food Bank volunteers taking monetary donations. Everyone who donates will be entered to win prizes provided by the Chargers – including an autographed football!
