RADIANT LIFE CELEBRATE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK! ¡Celebre la semana de las escuelas católicas!

FAMILY FUN

FOR EVERYONE!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Fall has arrived! If you’re like me, you find the chill in the air and the vibrant colors of nature invigorating and inspiring. The relaxing days of summer have left us refreshed and renewed, ready to resume our studies, root for our favorite sports teams, and ramp up our volunteer activities.

At Catholic Financial Life, we believe in the words of St. Francis of Assisi who said, “Preach the Gospel at all times, if necessary, use words.” There are many ways for you to get involved and take advantage of all your membership has to offer. Here are just a few:

Volunteers are at the heart of Catholic Financial Life, where caring for our neighbors in need and giving back to local communities has been central to our mission for nearly 150 years.

• Participate in a chapter event – Nearly 2,500 chapter events were held in 2016.

In my last message, I asked you to let us know what charitable cause you would like Catholic Financial Life to support. The results of that survey reinforced our shared values, and affirmed that the Society supports what you find most important. Your top three causes were education, youth, and poverty. Here are just a few ways Catholic Financial Life supported those causes last year: • Education – Awarding more than $288,000 in scholarships to students in elementary school through college across the country, and donating more than $500,000 to schools. • Youth – Providing financial reimbursement of more than $40,000 to those attending a Catholic summer camp or retreat, organizing a variety of member events, and sponsoring a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. • Poverty – Continuing our ten-year national partnership with the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, in serving the needs of the poor, with financial support of more than $1.2 million to date.

2 CATHOLIC FINANCIAL LIFE FALL 2017

• Volunteer – Last year, Catholic Financial Life members volunteered in excess of 85,500 hours with an economic impact of more than $2 million.

• Utilize your member benefits – $500,000 worth of benefits were distributed last year. • Donate - Consider giving to the Catholic Financial Life Foundation, which provides funding for much of our educational support. As you review your volunteer options this fall and upcoming holiday season, I encourage you to consider becoming more active in our network of local chapters, or learn about other ways to engage more with Catholic Financial Life. For more information, please call Joe Gadbois (414) 278-6601 or Sally Krochalk (414) 278-6604 in our Member Engagement department. Before long, we’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving and entering into the season of Advent. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your membership with Catholic Financial Life, and pray for the Lord’s blessings on you and your family. Fraternally,

William R. O’Toole President & CEO PS: If I can be of any service, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 800-927-2547.

FALL 2017 CATHOLIC FINANCIAL LIFE 3

4 CATHOLIC FINANCIAL LIFE FALL 2017

Fraternalmente,

William R. O’Toole Presidente y Director Ejecutivo

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ “...a man scatters seed on the ground. Whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.” – Mark 4: 26-27 As many members of Catholic Financial Life can attest, farming is hard work. Throughout the growing season new challenges arise daily. Yet when the harvest approaches, there is a sense of a job well done. In the end, farmers realize that the fruits of their stewardship and their labor will help feed communities far and wide, all while providing much needed support to their own families. Farming, like our spiritual lives, requires hard work and diligence. It also requires deep-seeded faith in the heavenly power that guides our lives. It demands that we go beyond ourselves and call upon our Lord to guide us through difficult times that are out of our control. Our lives are like fields growing through the summer, striving to reach the fall and a time of abundance. Though we nurture the soil, water it, and do all we can to bear fruit, we cannot make it happen without the conditions being just right. It’s still a miraculous occurrence. In our spiritual lives, prayer and contemplation are the water and nutrients our souls require. Unfortunately, even in the best of conditions, uncertainty, doubt, and silence are like weeds that can affect our fullest harvest. However, with prayer, what happens next is in God’s hands and beyond our control. That fact is both challenging and liberating… it requires faith and faith is a gift! The dignity of hard work and placing your trust in God’s hands can be found in the patron of farmers, Saint Isidore of Spain. His philosophy of life was that if you place your spiritual life in order, your earthly commitments will fall into place. Trust in God, cultivate a fertile spiritual life, and no matter what happens outwardly, you will persevere through the drought, floods, heat, and cold of the most fickle and difficult of growing seasons. In the end, like the harvest time, your lives will bear abundance beyond measure. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki Archbishop of Milwaukee Catholic Financial Life’s Spiritual Director

FALL 2017 CATHOLIC FINANCIAL LIFE 5

In John’s Gospel, Jesus tells the Apostles, “I give you a new commandment: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35)

MAYNARD KETTNER Wisconsin - Chapter 188

Have you ever been to a brat fry? If you haven’t, consider attending one held by the brat fry king! Maynard Kettner, a member since 1944, has been running successful brat frys for the last 18 years. The only year he skipped hosting one was when he had open heart surgery but held two the following year. It was his way of thanking God and his great doctors for a speedy recovery.

A Big Thank You to the Volunteers Maynard credits the success of the brat frys to the many volunteers who have helped over the years. “I’ve been blessed with volunteers that help make the brat frys a success,” shared Maynard. He welcomes anyone to come out and help.

The Famous Brat Fry

Some volunteers include members of area youth groups. He works with children to help make good life choices. “The kids learn a lot from working the stand including business and customer service skills,” says Maynard.

A majority of Maynard’s brat frys have been held at the Colwitz Gas Station in Shiocton, Wis. Jack Colwitz, the owner of the gas station, donates the grill, soda, water and ice for each event. They offer a variety of condiments including sauerkraut, sautéed onions, relish, and of course the basics of ketchup and mustard.

“I’d like to thank Catholic Financial Life for their support over the years. I’d also like to thank Ron and Sally Korth for acting as a back-up when I’m unable to make a brat fry,” said Maynard. Both Ron and Sally will be taking over the brat frys when Maynard eventually steps down as brat fry king.

All of the proceeds are donated to a local area youth group or charity. Some of the local Wisconsin parishes he’s helped

A big thank you to Maynard for his many years of service as the brat fry king!

From helping at church dinners as a boy, to the many brat frys he puts on today, volunteering has been a huge part of Maynard’s life. As a way to give back to local organizations, Maynard hosts a few brat frys each year. Throughout the years, he has sold over 20,000 brats and raised over $60,000! “I pride myself in customer service and enjoy working for the dear Lord,” said Maynard.

To Honor the Brothers In early 2015, Terri Valenta, daughter to Leonard and a Catholic Financial Life member, thought it would be an amazing experience for her father (55-year member) and uncles to be a part of a Freedom Honor Flight. This LaCrosse, Wis. based organization was created for the purpose of flying our military veterans to Washington D.C. to visit memorials that stand in their honor. Terri submitted applications for all the brothers in the fall of 2015 and a year later they received word that they would be on the May 2017 flight. Typically, the organization gives priority to WWII veterans and veterans with a terminal illness, but in this case, exception. case they made an exception

A Heart-Felt Surprise When stepping onto the plane on their way home, they found a special surprise waiting for them. A pack of letters and cards written by family, friends, parishioners, other Catholic Financial Life members, and neighbors thanking them for their service, was placed on their seats. As the Semerad brothers exited the plane, they were surprised with a homecoming celebration of fireworks, the Onalaska marching band, representatives from all branches of active duty, and family and friends! A month later, the Freedom Honor Flight held a reunion party for all the veterans, guardians and their families. Each attendee received a commemorative photo album along with a CD including photos from the trip. This was truly a day they will never forget. Thank you to the Semerad brothers for your many years of service for our country!

The Freedom Honor Flight The Semerad brothers, along with more than 100 other veterans, took off on May 6, 2017 for Washington D.C.
