Annual Report

Dear Friends of Jefferson College Foundation Although we live in challenging economic times, the Jefferson College Foundation grows stronger each year because of our donors. A gift to the Foundation enables and encourages our students of all ages to persevere in sometimes seemingly helpless circumstances. Support for departmental and faculty needs enhances the quality of the student’s educational experience. Our students and alumni enjoy reputations for being prepared, hardworking and successful in their endeavors. They strive to serve their families and the community. A spirit of optimism is reflected in what they do. This belief in a successful outcome to a difficult challenge is directly related to the positive and supportive environment at Jefferson College. I wish that each of you could have the opportunity to visit with students and alumni who have benefitted from scholarships and financial aid through the Foundation. The degree of their gratitude is reflected in the help they provide for other needful students. The work of the Jefferson College Foundation has never been more critical than it is today. We invite you join with us in continuing to make a positive difference in the lives of our students and the future of Jefferson College. Thank you for the trust you have placed in us and for continued support in the future. Sincerely,

Dennis J. Kehm, President Jefferson College Foundation, Inc.

Cash

Savings Bonds

Making a donation of cash to the Viking Fund is as simple as writing a check or authorizing a charge on your credit card. From your standpoint, it’s no fuss, no bother. Find out how the Jefferson College Foundation can put your unrestricted or restricted contribution to work without delay.

There’s more than one way to turn your savings bonds into a generous donation while reducing the tax liability generated by these secure investments.

Securities Stock that has increased in value is one of the most popular assets used for charitable giving, once it has been held for more than one year. Making a gift of securities offers you the chance to help our organization while realizing many important benefits for yourself.

Charitable IRA Rollover Under the extended charitable IRA legislation, if you’re age 70½ or older you can make charitable gifts now to the Jefferson College Foundation using funds from your individual retirement accounts (IRAs) without undesirable tax effects.

Retirement Plan Assets Do you have money saved in an employee retirement plan, IRA or tax-sheltered annuity? Each of these retirement plan assets contains income that has yet to be taxed. Your beneficiaries will owe the income tax at your death, totaling up to 35 percent, which may be reason enough to consider giving your loved ones less heavily taxed assets and leaving your retirement plan assets to charity instead.

Real Estate Your property opens the door to a unique giving opportunity. From townhomes to farmland, many types of real estate assets can be donated to qualified charitable organizations like ours. You’ll be helping a good cause, enjoying tax benefits and potentially setting up a lifetime stream of income.

Closely Held Stock A donation of your closely held stock can be a fine way for you to make a sizable charitable contribution while realizing valuable tax benefits.

Life Insurance Most of us think of life insurance as protection, especially for our loved ones. But it is also a powerful tool you can use to champion our work far into the future.

Life Insurance Death Benefits Your need for life insurance changes as time passes, making way for a new opportunity for its use. If you no longer need the coverage to protect your loved ones, consider changing your policy’s beneficiary to support the Jefferson College Foundation.

Bequests

Endowed Gifts

Discover a powerful way to make a gift to us in your name or in the name of a loved one while realizing tax benefits for your kindness.

Beneficiary Designations Continue supporting our work even after your lifetime by naming us as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, life insurance or insurance annuity assets.

Charitable Gift Annuities Make a donation and, in turn, receive a fixed annuity payment each year for life.

Give Your Home, But Live There for Life: Find out how you can make a gift to Jefferson College Foundation of a remainder interest in your home, receive sizable tax benefits now and continue living in your home for the rest of your life.

Charitable Lead Trusts Make a donation now while reducing the tax burden for your heirs in the future.

Charitable Remainder Trusts In the right circumstances, this plan can increase your income, reduce your taxes, unlock appreciated investments, rid you of investment worries and ultimately provide very important support.

Memorial and Honorary Gifts If you have a family member or friend whose life has been touched by the Jefferson College Foundation, we hope you’ll consider making a gift to us in honor of that person.

Donations Bring Life to Programs at Jefferson College Imperial With the recent opening of Jefferson College Imperial to provide public service and health-care related training, the college’s Law Enforcement Academy and Certified Nurse Assistant programs received several donations of equipment and furnishings for the new facility from community members in support of higher education. Jefferson College is proud to recognize the following individuals for their generosity: Mark and Tracy Sullivan of Arnold, John and Jennifer Linhorst of Crystal City, Scott Poe of Imperial, and Patrick DeClue of Festus. In addition to personal donations, Jefferson Regional Medical Center donated two hospital beds, tables and dressers for the Certified Nurse Assistant program thanks to the efforts of Bob McKeon. The donations will enable the college to provide students with a first class education while continuing the institution’s longstanding commitment to care for our community. Thanks for helping Jefferson College students discover their future!

Family Endows Scholarship to Honor Legacy of Earl Blackwell As a lasting tribute to the tremendous impact that Honorable Earl Blackwell had on the region and state, his eldest daughter, Sharon Rogier (and her brother Bill Blackwell), recently visited Jefferson College to establish an endowed scholarship in his memory on behalf of the Blackwell family. The Earl R. Blackwell Endowed Scholarship was awarded with the 2011 fall semester. The $30,000 endowment was made possible through memorial contributions and private funds from his family. Earl Blackwell of Hillsboro played a vital role in the formation of Jefferson College when, as a state senator in 1961, he introduced Senate Bill Number Seven (later becoming the Junior College Act) that made possible the formation and financing of public community colleges across Missouri. He was also an original member of the Jefferson College Board of Trustees, serving from 1963-1972. A graduate of Washington University and Washington University School of Law, Blackwell practiced law in Hillsboro for over 50 years. He served as a state senator for the 22nd district from 1958-1974 and became an Associate Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge in 1991.

College Creates $30,000 Endowed Scholarship for Public Service As a leader in public service career training, Jefferson College was awarded $30,000 to establish an endowed scholarship to train Jefferson County residents in first-responder fields of fire science, law enforcement, criminal justice, or EMT/paramedic. The funds were awarded to the college in conjunction with a Cy Pres Fund class action court settlement regarding the massive chlorine leak at the Dixie Petroleum Company (DPC) Industries plant near Festus in 2002. The scholarship will be named the HazMat Responders and Workers of the Jefferson County Chlorine Spill of 2002 Endowed Scholarship. Using the interest generated from the endowment, the college began awarding two scholarships annually in the fall of 2011.

“The creation of this endowed scholarship will forever honor the first responders that so bravely stopped the chlorine leak,” said College President Dr. Raymond Cummiskey. “As a community college, Jefferson is extremely proud to have trained thousands of local fire fighters, police officers and EMT personnel that protect us every day. These scholarship funds will enable future generations to continue this noble calling on behalf of our county.” Jefferson College was one of 12 community entities that were selected to receive funds by the Cy Pres Committee consisting of Kevin Roberts, Tim Engelmeyer and Rick Francis. Admissions and Financial Aid Director Julie Fraser secured the funds on behalf of the college by submitting a grant proposal.

A

nnual Named Scholarships can be established with a minimum donation of $2,000 and must maintain that balance through annual gifts as the funds are distributed. Endowment Scholarships can be established with a minimum donation of $30,000, which can be paid over a period of five years, if so desired. While Annual Named Scholarships provide immediate support to students, endowed scholarships accrue interest and only the interest is used each year, leaving the principal in tact to generate scholarship funds indefinitely. No matter which type of scholarship a donor decides to establish, the donor chooses the qualifications a student must possess to qualify for the scholarship funds. For example, you may designate students from a specific school district, level of financial need, grade point average, etc.

Jefferson Health System $50,000 Donation Creates Minority Nursing Scholarship Taking steps to provide easier access to higher education for area residents, Jefferson Health System (Jefferson Regional Medical Center) has partnered with Jefferson College to establish a minority nursing scholarship for those who are interested in training to become a registered nurse (RN).

Twin City Optimist Club “Brings Out the Best” with Scholarship Donation Maintaining their long-standing commitment toward providing higher education opportunities for area residents, representatives of the Twin City Area Optimist Club presented a $2,500 donation on behalf of its members to support scholarships at Jefferson College.

The scholarship is made possible by Jefferson Regional Medical Center’s five-year $50,000 donation to the Jefferson College Foundation.

Dear Jefferson College Foundation, I want to express my appreciation for being selected to receive the Wal-Mart Stores of Jefferson County Scholarship. The scholarship could not have come at a better time. I am a 45 year old displaced worker. I lost my position as an office manager at a physical therapy practice after the company closed all four clinics due to bankruptcy. With the economy being in the shape it is I found it difficult to find a new job comparable to my experience. I had decided it was a good time to go to college and get my degree in business management. Unfortunately my unemployment was not extended after the first six month time frame due to the vote not passing in Congress. I was deeply concerned that I would not be able to afford to continue going to school without receiving unemployment. When I received the notice in the mail two days ago that I had received this scholarship I was elated that I would be able to continue with my education.

Sincerely, Dawn Rueschhoff Dear Jefferson College Foundation, I am appreciative of this award, as I come from a low-income background. It can often be difficult to afford what I need, and I depend on financial aid to help me pay for college and for general necessities. The scholarship you have awarded me will go towards making my life a little easier. I think it is so wonderful that there are people out there willing to help me attain my dreams and move up in the world. No one in my family has ever been to college before; some of them have not even completed high school. College is a great opportunity for me. I am majoring in biochemistry. I am hoping to go into medical research. I could be like anyone in my family, working hard, long hours for minimum wage at a factory or restaurant. Instead, I am a scientist in the making and will be working to figure out what causes diseases, what treatments work best for certain diseases, and why our bodies behave the way they do. I am so happy to be given this award, and I thank you for all of your kindness.

Sincerely, Heidi Rebstock Dear Jefferson College Foundation, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for my scholarship. This will help me to continue my education through Jefferson College. Everything helps during these difficult economic times that we are going through. I want to pursue a degree in radiation therapy. Since my father had cancer, I wanted to get more involved with this field to help others in time of need. It was a very hard time for me because there was not a lot I could do for my father, and now that I am going in this field, I want to give back to others. Again, I want to thank you so much for considering me for the Twin City Area Optimist Club scholarship.
