Explanation of Advent The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival”. The season of Advent, a season of waiting, is designed to cultivate our awareness of God’s actions—past, present, and future. In Advent we hear the prophecies of the Messiah’s coming as addressed to us—people who wait for the second coming. In Advent we heighten our anticipation for the ultimate fulfillment of all Old Testament promises, when the wolf will lie down with the lamb, death will be swallowed up, and every tear will be wiped away. In this way Advent highlights for us the larger story of God’s redemptive plan. A deliberate tension is built into the practice of the Advent season. Christ has come and yet not all things have reached completion. While we remember Israel’s waiting and hoping and we give thanks for Christ’s birth, we also anticipate his second coming at the end of time. --The Worship Sourcebook

Explanation of Art Installations

The art installations for Advent were inspired by Hebrews 11. As we read through the scripture, prayed, thought, and talked together, several themes emerged: leaving home for a risk filled journey to an unknown destination, not seeing clearly how to get there beyond the next step, and walking into the unknown. We thought about how hard the walk of faith is, how uncertain when the signs or directions seem ambiguous or veiled, and how God’s leading is usually clearer in hindsight. How easy it is to second guess ourselves and the journey when the goal and promise is long in coming…or never fulfilled in this life at all. The paintings were collaborations: Students from 2nd through Middle School did pencil drawings based on the stories in Hebrews 11. Artists scaled the drawings to fit large paper, and the congregation painted them during our Advent Workshop. Read Hebrews 11 and compare it with clues in the paintings to help identify the faith heroes who are depicted. The vestment fabric stands for the promise of descendents as numerous as stars and sand. ~~Barb Knuckles, on behalf of the Creative Class and liturgical artists at Redeemer.

Window Covering

Hebrews 11 accounts the faithful walks of a diverse group of people. These faithful acted their God-given work in a territory set apart for them. The overlapping and distinct areas of color represent the lives lived “by faith,” each layer of color adding to the bigger picture and greater glory of our Triune God. ~~Katie Pourcho

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge;

His faithfulness is our shield and our rampart.

Opening Hymn “The Lord is King” All

The Lord is King! Lift up your voice, O earth and all ye heav’ns, rejoice! From world to world, the joy shall ring, “The Lord omnipotent is King!” Sing his praise, sing his praise, Lord of lords, Ancient of Days; Sing his praise, sing his praise, all your days, all your days. The Lord is King! Who then shall dare resist his will, distrust his care, Or murmur at his wise decrees, or doubt his royal promises? Sing his praise, sing his praise, Lord of lords, Ancient of Days; Sing his praise, sing his praise, all your days, all your days. The Lord is King! Bow down you must; the Judge of all the earth is just; Holy and true are all his ways; let every creature sing his praise. Sing his praise, sing his praise, Lord of lords, Ancient of Days; Sing his praise, sing his praise, all your days, all your days. Sing his praise, sing his praise, Lord of lords, Ancient of Days; Sing his praise, sing his praise, all your days, all your days. words Josiah Conder, 1824; music Nathan Partain, 2003

Jesus, the risen king, declares, “All authority on heaven and earth has been given to me.” We avoid and evade Jesus’ authority. We deny that he has the right to tell us what to do. We shut our ears to his word and live under our own authority. Lord, you have established authority and entrusted it to seek the common good. Yet we know that authority is often abused by human authorities. We lament, Lord, that what you make good so often we distort and even destroy with it. Authority exploits rather than serves. Authorities wield what they hold for themselves, and enslave rather than set free. Jesus invites us to come to him and drink that we may have life. We seek life and purpose on our own. We forsake the spring of living water, and try to drink from cisterns cracked and dry. Lord, forgive us and help us.

In love, you have authority to lay it down and authority to take it back up again. Through you, Jesus, we find pasture. We enter through you and are saved. You came that we may have life, and have it to the full.

Song of Thanksgiving “Marvelous Grace of Our Loving Lord” All

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt, Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured, There where the blood of the Lamb was spilt. Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that is greater than all our sin! Sin and despair, like the sea waves cold, Threaten the soul with infinite loss; Grace that is greater - yes, grace untold Points to the refuge, the mighty cross. Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that is greater than all our sin! Dark is the stain that we cannot hide; What can avail to wash it away? Look! there is flowing a crimson tide; Whiter than snow you may be today. Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that is greater than all our sin! Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace, Freely bestowed on all who believe! You that are longing to see his face, Will you this moment his grace receive? Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that is greater than all our sin! words Julia H. Johnston, 1910; music Daniel B. Towner, 1910; Hope Publishing, 1938

Song of Thanksgiving “Your Ways and Not My Ways” All

My will, O Lord, my deepest need, to you I give. For what I’d seek, and what I’d gain, is foolishness. When I fight against your voice with hardened heart, I am lost, toyed with and I stumble in the dark. I want your ways and not my ways, I want your plans and not my plans, ‘Cause when you bless it’s so much more than I could ask. You turn in me, and from my earth, bring loving fruit. O Spirit breathe, abide in me and I in you. O bind your heart to mine and never leave, And Jesus keep me ever at your feet. I want your ways and not my ways, I want your plans and not my plans, ‘Cause when you bless it’s so much more than I could ask. I want your will and not my will, I want your time and not my time, ‘Cause when your work is done, it’s beautiful and right. When you call me, I’ll obey and won’t resist. Every part and every reach of me says “yes” I want your ways and not my ways, I want your plans and not my plans, ‘Cause when you bless it’s so much more than I could ask. I want your will and not my will, I want your time and not my time, ‘Cause when your work is done, it’s beautiful and right. I do not know but i can taste, That I will weep and laugh with praise, because it pleases you to overwhelm with grace. Nathan Partain, 2016

Children’s Worship is for ages 4 through kindergarten and is a time for children to worship through song, Bible stories and response (art or story play). Children will return to the sanctuary before communion, and parents can pick them up at that time. Visitors are welcome, and parents are always invited to attend with their children. 5

Offering of Gifts and Service Pastoral Address Charles Anderson

Scripture Mark 1:14–39 Reader

After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” 14

As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him. 16

When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. 19

They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are— the Holy One of God!” 21

“Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. 25

The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. 27

As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. 29

6

That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demonpossessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. 32

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” 35

Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. 38

Authority for Life

7

Notes:

Community Group Questions 1) How do you tend to relate to authority? What has shaped your default response? How does that shape how you see Jesus’ claims to authority? 2) Read Mark 1:14–31. What strikes you about how Jesus reveals his authority? 3) How can you – both personally and as a group – hold together the fullness of the kingdom, in its wide and zoom lenses? 4)Where do you feel moved to hope for the restoration and re-humanization of life in God’s kingdom? Take some time to share and pray together for Jesus to reign as king. Children’s Questions As a kid, sometimes it can feel like everybody is just ordering you around: your parents, teachers, older siblings. And what they tell us is designed to take away all our fun. But authority actually gives life, it helps us live like God invites us to. And that’s the kind of king that Jesus is. How does Jesus show he’s the king in Mark 1? How can you respond to him as your king? 8

Call to Communion and Prayer Guidelines for the Reception of Communion Redeemer welcomes all Christians who are willing to forsake their sin and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation and who are members of congregations which proclaim the gospel to receive Communion with us. We will be coming forward for the distribution of Communion. Please eat the bread privately, and then drink the cup together with us after everyone has returned to their seats. Clear cups (located in the interior rings) contain grape juice. Red cups (exterior ring of tray) contain wine. Children who have been examined by the elders and admitted to the Lord’s Table are able to partake of Communion. The ministry of prayer is one of the ways we live together as a community of believers and seekers. During Communion, members of our prayer team are available at the front of the sanctuary. It would be our privilege to pray with you as we walk together through the joys and struggles of life. We also encourage you to pray with one another in the pews during this time of movement in our service.

Prayers Prayer for Guidance to Truth God, I don’t know how I feel about what I have heard today but I want to trust that you are good, that you are loving and that you are just. I want to know if you are the true God. If you are there would you guide my soul to the truest truth. I don’t want to be tricked or believe a lie. I don’t want to believe in something just to make me feel better. Please God, lead me to the truth. Prayer of Belief and Repentance Jesus, I believe that you are who you say you are: the Son of God and the savior of broken people like me. I need forgiveness. I need to be made new and to start over again. I now turn away from all I have been doing. I turn away from my self-centered life. I turn my whole heart toward you. I believe that when you were crucified, you took all of my evil and somehow you gave me all of your beauty. I invite your Holy Spirit to live in me. I do not want to live for myself any more. I want you to lead my life. I want to know you and to receive your love for me. Please teach me and protect me and guide me. I am yours. I ask these things in the name of Jesus. Amen. Prayer of Doubt and Faith God, I don’t really believe all of this but there is a part of my heart that knows there is truth and goodness here. I am confused by the fact that there are so many things that I don’t understand or that make me angry about you. There are also so many things that fill my heart with hope and many things that draw me to you and I want to put my trust in you. God, you say I can come to you and ask for anything so if you are real, please give me the faith I need to believe. Give me the desire to continue to seek after you. Keep my heart from self-deception. Protect me from any evil misleading or binding spirits. Calm my fears. Soften my cynicism. Be patient with me and if you are God, please don’t let me go but instead let me know that you are real. I have a little faith, help me in my doubt.

Song of Celebration “Fairest Lord Jesus” Ensemble

Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature, Son of God and Son of Man, Thee will I cherish, thee will I honor, Thou, my soul’s glory, joy and crown. Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands, Robed in the blooming garb of spring; Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, Who makes the woeful heart to sing. Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight And all the twinkling starry host; Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer Than all the angels heav’n can boast. Beautiful Savior! Lord of all the nations! Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, praise, adoration, Now and forever more be thine. words Munster Gesangbuch, 1677; tr. Departing Hymn “I am One of Those” All

I am one of those, at the table not invited, And, to all here at the feast, it’s very plain; I cannot hide in etiquette or conversation, But Christ himself sent word to me and so I came. I am one of those who was dead and fully buried, And I still bear every stigma of decay; There is no way I can cover what I’ve been through, ‘Cause when Jesus called, I came fresh from the grave. Though the world may number me among the foolish, I think Jesus Christ is all I need to know, Jesus suffered and paid blood to buy the lowest of the low. Hallelujah! Amen! That’s me! Yes, I am one of those! I am one of those, who was a leper and contagious, The deformities and scars I have today; Yet while I was vile with sickness, Jesus loved me, And he healed, restored, and, through and through, remade. I am one of those who was doomed to death in prison, And I’ve done more evil things than I could say; Jesus broke inside and there unlocked my shackles, And, to set me free, he died and took my place. Though the world may number me among the foolish, I think Jesus Christ is all I need to know, Jesus suffered and paid blood to buy the lowest of the low. Hallelujah! Amen! That’s me! Yes, I am one of those! I am one of those, who was hard to love and ugly, Self-righteous critical religion was my stain. So I ran to Christ to wash and be discovered; Jesus called me out and he covered up my shame. Though the world may number me among the foolish, I think Jesus Christ is all I need to know, Jesus suffered and paid blood to buy the lowest of the low. Hallelujah! Amen! That’s me! Yes, I am one of those! Nathan Partain, 2009

Thanks for joining us in our mission! About a month ago, Charles brought our whole congregation into the fact that we were behind in raising money for our ministry expenses and responsibilities. He asked that each of us prayerfully consider how God was calling us to financially give to help reach our goal. To our amazement and encouragement, you all responded with an overflow of generosity. In fact, 169 different peoples or families gave gifts ranging from $5 to $16,000 and together, as one big Redeemer family, not only did we make budget, we exceeded it, ending 2017 at 101.8%, $30,160.16 over. Thank you for partnering with us! Over the next few weeks, we will be wrapping up the finances for 2017 and the leadership will be praying about how the Lord would like us to use his money for his kingdom. We would love for you to join us in those prayers. It is exciting and humbling to look back and see what God has done through Redeemer in 2017 and we know that he has gone ahead of us into 2018, with good works for the healing of our city. It is an honor to be in this together!

Town Hall Follow Up We hope you were able to be a part of our town hall last Sunday. We had great conversations about our vision for starting gospel communities in Indy and how to make that happen. Most important is for each of us to consider how we can personally own this vision and be a part of what God might do to change lives in our city through our giving, our prayer, maybe eventually our going to be part of a new church. Over the next few months, we as elders will visit community groups to talk about Redeemer’s heart for engaging Indy with the gospel through new churches. We’re looking forward to wrestling together with how we can all own this vision. If you want to talk one-to-one before then (or aren’t in a community group), let us know so we can arrange how to connect. An email went out at the beginning of last week highlighting the town hall. If you didn’t receive the email and would like to, please send your email address to Lauren [[email protected]].

Membership at Redeemer Membership in a PCA church is meaningful in multiple ways. First, we believe that as Christians, it is a part of our calling to be active and engaged in the Church. When you become a member, you take public vows to confirm your faith in Christ and commit to his Church. These vows submit members to the leadership and discipline of the church. We submit ourselves to accountability just like in marriage, friendship, citizenship, and any other relationship or institution that we enter into. In the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA), membership allows you certain benefits. Members in good standing are able to vote on church matters. They elect elders and call pastors and have a say in other church business. To become a member at Redeemer you must take our Discover Redeemer class and meet with an elder for an interview. You will take membership vows privately and then publically before the church. To begin this process, contact Jamie MacGregor [[email protected]].

Good to See You Again. You’ve been around, but there are so many ways to get plugged in that you’re not sure where to start. How about starting here? Give us your name and email, check some boxes, and drop this in the offering plate. FIRST & LAST NAME
