Whether their uniforms are red, green, black or orange, blue collar teams can be found in every sport. Blue collar workers are a blast from the past, a reference to those with jobs requiring physical brawn and a tireless work ethic. Even today, when describing hard scrapple NFL teams, this sports cliché still resonates. The Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears, and Green Bay Packers are traditionally recognized as NFL blue collar teams. They perennially field squads that embody the strong work ethic of their fans. Blue collar teams in the NFL normally play smash mouth football. They regularly run the ball off tackle and boast stout, aggressive defenses. You may never witness ESPN or the NFL Network featuring NFL players carrying aluminum lunch pales, sporting hard hats and donning blue collared shirts. However, the slobber knocker, “three yards and a cloud of dust” mentality these tough teams embody guarantees fans lots to root for. Because blue collar teams will always work hard and never back down in any NFL game they play. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

Along with the 218’ bell tower of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the gleaming 187’ dome of the school’s administration building, the 210’ tall Hesburgh Library forms the skyline of America’s most recognized Catholic university. An enormous mosaic adorns the entire south side of the library. It towers over the north end zone scoreboard of the University of Notre Dame’s 80,795 seat football stadium. The famous mosaic showcases Christ the Teacher reaching out to others. With his familiar raised arms, Jesus appears to mimic an NCAA football official signaling a touch down. Known throughout the college football world as Touchdown Jesus, this wonderful Word of Life mosaic needs no instant replay or further review to make a call. Any ruling on the field for Notre Dame will always stand because apparently Touchdown Jesus has already signaled a score. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#23 Football Comic

You’ll never see an ESPN highlight reel with woefully out-of-shape football players like the ones pictured in this comic. However, sports fans should immediately recognize how this comic brings to life the universally understood expression gut check time. Cheeseburgers aside, critical times in big NFL and NCAA football games require that players be extra tough. To win a game, they have to dig down deep in their bellies and unearth additional energy, grit and courage. As trite as this cliché gets, it never loses its appeal. Coaches and fans always expect their players to play their very best at gut check time. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

This immovable football wall stood as arguably the National Football League’s best defensive team ever. The Pittsburgh Steelers’ Steel Curtain defense of the 1970s totally tyrannized opposing offenses, helping this franchise capture four Super Bowls – IX, X, XIII and XIV – during that time. Birthed as part of a 1971 Pittsburgh radio station promotion, the Steel Curtain reference was originally created by a ninth grade student. It captured the spirit of both the NFL team and Pittsburgh’s steel mill workforce. The name became a source of pride not only for the team, but also for the City of Pittsburgh. In every season during the 1970s the Steel Curtain finished in all top 10 NFL defensive categories. Whether you want to call this defensive wall immovable or invincible, one thing is certain. With four Super Bowl wins to their credit, this Steelers defense earned its mettle as one mighty Steel Curtain! MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#21 Football Comic

In this comic, the Lions picked the wrong day to face the Gators. The scenario could happen in any football game at any level - high school, NCAA or NFL. If a team is not properly prepared – or lets down its guard defensively – they can run into a figurative buzz saw. Even today, this outdated cliché reminds players and fans of an ageold truism. Lack of preparation - mental, physical or both - can result in nasty scrapes. Nobody wants their reeling team showing up on ESPN highlights running into a buzz saw, either literally or figuratively. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#20 Football Comic

The image in this comic isn’t a reference to New England Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick’s famous “Spygate” scandal. It’s a football figure of speech and not a reference to actual thievery. Stealing a play out of another team’s playbook helps describe how a team successfully anticipates what its opponent plans to do on the playing field, and then capitalizes on it. You don’t need to be a Bandit like the one in this comic in order to metaphorically steal the other team’s plays. You just need to be a smart and savvy football player who knows his competition well and anticipates their next move. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#19 Football Comic

In the same way the 2013 NFL Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens’ defense intimidated opponents, the fictional Ravens in this comic have similarly followed in their footsteps. No football fan wants to watch a game that’s played without passion or when it appears that one team has figuratively failed to show up. Blowout games resulting from one team being present in body, but lacking in spirit, disappoint both serious players and rabid fans alike. When it comes to familiar football phrases, this one will always remain in our sports vocabularies whenever one team metaphorically fails to show up for a game. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#18 Football Comic

No need to be a Florida Gator or an LSU Tiger fan to enjoy this humorous clichéd football comic. Whether it’s in a NFL, NCAA or high school game, the scene in this comic plays out every football season. The exhausted looks on the players’ faces, and the tail-less Gator and Tiger team mascots, capture a familiar happening on football fields across America. The mascots’ tails may be missing, but sports fans know that they’ve just watched a great game. Great games happen when both teams square off in high-scoring, overtime thrillers . . . and play their tails right off. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#17 Football Comic

In 1978, NFL Films called it the greatest football play of all time. Designed around a two-thousand-year-old miraculous Catholic belief known as the Immaculate Conception, football’s Immaculate Reception marks one of the sport’s most clever plays on words. Pittsburgh sportscaster Myron Cope first used the clever term during a 1972 NFL Playoff Game. It described a last second pass between the Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers. Cope referred to Pittsburgh Steelers’ rookie Franco Harris’ miraculous catch, or his reception of a deflected pass, in the game’s final possession as the Immaculate Reception. Pittsburgh Steelers fans still talk about Franco Harris’ famed catch, insisting that divine intervention created the turning point for the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise. This famed reception borrowed from the Catholics did more than help win the historic playoff game. It paved the way for the Steelers to win five Super Bowl Championships. When it comes to miracles, the Immaculate Reception is one cliché all football fans can believe in. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#16 Football Comic

Words aren’t necessary to describe the pained player or the dismayed coach featured in this comic. Whether in NFL, NCAA or even high school football games, players can fail to perform their best when making ill-advised decisions. Rather than merely losing a game, they also suffer from knowing they were responsible for inflicting harm on their own team. Fortunately, the comic employs a sling shot doing the shooting rather than an actual gun. Regardless of the weapon, nobody on a football team wants to know they’re responsible for their team’s loss for being the ones who shot themselves in the foot. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#15 Football Comic

The really young players on this team are apparently unfazed by the more mature football team looming on the horizon. Football fans would never witness a scene of diaper clad toddlers wearing football helmets on an actual NFL or NCAA football field. Yet, the really young team in this comic figuratively depicts confident players on NFL teams comprised of several rookies or NCAA teams made up of lots of underclassmen. Regardless of their size and age, really young teams armed with skill and confidence never become intimidated by bigger, stronger and more experienced opponents. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#14 Football Comic

Whether you call it crunch time or gut check time, no explanation is necessary for this cliche. All sports fans know that at critical junctures, a team needs to step up their game. When there’s a huge championship trophy at stake, players need to rise up to meet the challenge. It doesn’t matter if the crucial moment arrives during an NFL, NCAA or high school football game. Fans and players understand how vital it is to marshal every bit of energy and will power. If they want to climb the steep stairs to claim the championship trophy, winning football teams will always step up to the challenge. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

Technology changes so fast that iPhones, iPads and Macs will soon be replaced by newer, faster and more impressive gizmos. You’d think that popular sports expressions would keep up with changes in the way we communicate, but it’s just not so. Even the most computer savvy kids today know what it means to telegraph a pass. They’ve heard this sports expression countless times while watching highlights of NFL and NCAA football games. Remarking that a QB Tweeted to the defense or posted his anticipated pass on Facebook may be more in line with today’s technology. But, when it comes to being understood on the football field, the century old adage – and antique mode of communication - will do it. When a QB tips his helmet on where he’s throwing a pass, the timeless term telegraphing a pass is still the best way to describe it. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#12 Football Comic

Today’s NFL and NCAA offensive coordinators routinely design intricate plays with lots of X’s and O’s to catch their opponents off guard. When viewed on the chalkboard, sophisticated plays might look more like advanced math equations than routine football plays. Not all of today’s NCAA and NFL players aced the Wonderlic test or scored perfectly on their SAT’s. Some players with more brawn than brain may struggle in understanding the complexity of these diagrammed plays. But, this exaggerated XOXO comic can give every football fan a laugh. Any gridiron player should know football is a game of X’s and O’s and that hugs and kisses are the last thing to expect on the playing field. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#11 Football Comic

A century ago, audiences raved about the three ring circus developed by Ringling Brothers legends P.T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey. It was touted as the Greatest Show on Earth. The original circus masters would have never imagined how a future NFL team would borrow their slogan and give it a modern day twist. Playing on artificial grass at the Edward R. Jones Dome, the St. Louis Rams became football’s new big top attraction. The Rams’ entertaining play caused ESPN announcer Chris Berman to remark, "Forget Ringling Brothers: the Rams are the Greatest Show on Earth." Soon, Berman’s comment morphed. Playing America’s favorite sport on Astroturf instead of plain old grass, the St. Louis Rams became famous as the Greatest Show on Turf. Truly cliché, but it still ranks as one of NFL’s greatest nicknames ever. MIKE - thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#10 Football Comic

Football fans need not be Catholic or able to recite the Hail Mary prayer. It’s easy to understand the Hail Mary Pass. As if through divine intervention, the Catholic Church’s reference to Mary, the biblical mother of Jesus, cleverly descended from heaven and made itself known on the football field. The Hail Mary Pass was popularized in 1975 during an NFL divisional playoff between the Dallas Cowboys and the favored Minnesota Vikings. Dallas’ QB Roger Staubach connected with WR Drew Pearson on a long, last second pass. A stumbling Pearson miraculously caught the desperation pass, pinned the ball against his hip and walked backwards into the end zone. After the game, Staubach, a Roman Catholic, told reporters, “I closed my eyes and said a Hail Mary.” Originally applied to football, this pass now carries universal sports applications. When either divine intervention or a whole lot of luck are needed for successful completion of a play, fans of all sports and faiths understand and love the Hail Mary Pass. #9 Football Comic

Even in an era of high def Jumbotrons in 80,000 seat NFL stadiums, tacking on the extra point remains a relevant sports expression. Not long ago, guys like the one in this comic actually tacked on the extra point after touchdowns. The simple, manual job involved just a tool belt and hammer. Today’s sophisticated operators have traded brawn and physical labor for tech sense and fancy computer degrees as they currently keep score in stadiums and arenas. Whether we’re looking at a relic of a high school scoreboard or a high tech Jumbotron, football fans still love reciting this timeless cliché after a touchdown that the kicker is tacking on the extra point. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#8 Football Comic

When it comes to blanket coverage, this comic might never make an ESPN highlight, but it would sure make NFL all-pro defensive back Darrelle Revis proud. As evidenced by his Revis Island nickname, Tampa Bay Buccaneer corner back Darrelle Revis may be the most talented individual cover defender in the NFL. The age old football cliché reminds fans of frustrated NFL wide receivers struggling to get open on the limited football field real estate. When it comes to football’s blanket coverage, this old cliche is still a fitting one that all fans understand. MIKE – the ultimate talking head on sports!

#7 Football Comic

Football fans who love old Western Movies can definitely appreciate this clever comic! It’s a cowboy influenced depiction of circling the wagons during NFL, NCAA and high school football games. When viewing this comic’s covered wagons protecting the team’s quarterback, football fans immediately recognize the significance of the expression. Great NFL offensive lines from teams like the Patriots, Ravens and Packers expertly circle the wagons around franchise quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Joe Flacco and Aaron Rodgers. We could have updated this comic to depict high-tech, anti-virus spyware protecting a QB on a computer screen. But, what football fan would choose to leave behind the rough and ready notion of western movie defense? This American-bred circling of the wagons is far more exciting a way to describe the thrill! MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

Standing 13.5” tall and weighing in at a hefty 25 lbs., the Heisman Trophy is the most prestigious award in all of college sports. It’s also a perennial football favorite. Every December since 1935, the Heisman Trust in New York City awards the beautiful bronze trophy to the nation’s most outstanding football player. Heisman Trophy winners form college football’s most famous and wellrespected fraternity. These players will always be recognized for their extraordinary accomplishment. When it comes to football favorites, every fan and player would stiffarm would-be competitors and strike this familiar pose. The Heisman Trophy signifies every NCAA football player’s fantasy. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#5 Football Comic

This next pick easily hurdles his way into my FREE football comic book. Robert Griffin III, or simply RGIII, utilized an amazing combination of skill, speed and smarts to win the 2011 Heisman Trophy. Less than one year later, he became one of the NFL’s most exciting stars as a QB for the Washington Redskins. What distanced the athletically gifted Robert Griffin III from the rest of the pack of other fantastic NCAA athletes was his intelligence. He excelled in the classroom and graduated from Baylor with an impressive GPA. A high IQ enabled him to solve problems arising out of text books and helps him read blind side blitzes from defenses. With intelligence, incredible athleticism and a megawatt smile, it’s no surprise that RGIII has quickly hurdled over all would-be competitors to become one of the NFL’s brightest and talented new stars. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#4 Football Comic

It might sound insensitive or morbid, but when it comes to football, driving a nail into a coffin can be a really good thing. Metaphorically speaking, that is, for the winning team. This comic picks up on a scene common to NFL games, especially when self-promoting wide receivers find pay dirt late in a game. As the receiver celebrates, teammates in the background are literally hammering big nails into an extra large coffin belonging to the opposing team. Apparently, this football player’s actions, combined with the 42 – 14 score, indicate that the last touchdown produced a death knell. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

Famous for Niagra Falls, hydro-electric power plants and becoming America’s first city to convert to electric street lights, Buffalo, NY is also a die hard football town. Taking a cue from their city’s incandescent history, the Buffalo Bills’ famous and talented offensive line of the early 1970’s is widely celebrated as The Electric Company. Ironically, in a city known for its power plants, the Bills became the first NFL franchise to turn on the proverbial Juice - Hall of Fame running back O.J. Simpson. The star NFL running back recognized the power of the team’s offensive line and attributed his amazing rushing success to the massive guys who blocked for him. The Buffalo Bills only advanced to the NFL Playoffs once (1974) during the heyday of this popular NFL offensive line. However, football fans in the City of Lights and across the league have always been grateful to watch O.J. Simpson carry the football downfield after being turned on by his very own lead blockers cleverly known as The Electric Company. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

#2 Football Comic

During his 15-year career, the imposing defensive lineman known as the Minister of Defense delivered his football version of a fire and brimstone sermon. In his case, he demonstrated the message in the way he dominated opposing offenses. An ordained Evangelical pastor, Reggie White embodied his befitting Minister of Defense nickname. On the football field, he consistently administered defensive pressure. When away from the gridiron, he ministered to inner-city youth and those less fortunate. NFL.com rated White as the #7 NFL player of all-time, and his storied career validates the lofty choice. Sadly, the Minister of Defense answered to a heavenly calling when he passed away prematurely from a respiratory disease in 2004. For this remarkable player who impacted others both on and off the football field, NFL fans can all say, “Amen.” MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!

Originally meant as an insult, the Cheesehead nickname now ranks as one of the highest forms of professional football flattery. In 1987, Chicago Bears fans believed they were mocking Green Bay Packer rivals from the dairy state of Wisconsin. Their intended Cheesehead jab only churned the seeds of fan loyalty and Wisconsinites proudly adopted the label. Since the creation of the Cheesehead in 1987, the Packers have continued their success on the field. The Pack won Super Bowl XXXI in 1996 behind legendary QB Brett Favre. And, in 2011 they won Super Bowl XLV behind QB Aaron Rodgers. In America’s dairy land, cheese production, championship seasons and famous Lambeau leap touchdown celebrations continue today. And, to the disappointment of mocking Chicago Bears fans, so does Wisconsin’s pride in being called a Green Bay Packer Cheesehead. MIKE – thee ultimate talking head on sports!
