GAME 3: NO. 8 VILLANOVA (1-1, 0-0) VS. JAMES MADISON (2-1, 0-0) SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2014 VILLANOVA STADIUM (12,000) VILLANOVA, PA. TALLY ON TALLEY: Villanova head coach Andy Talley is currently in his 30th year as the Wildcat mentor. The winningest coach in school history, Talley’s record on the Main Line currently stands at 205-126-1. His 34-year overall coaching record is 235-144-2. Last season, Talley became the 37th coach in all divisions of college football to win 200 games at one school and just the eighth active coach with that distinction. Throughout his Wildcat career, Talley has guided Villanova to 10 NCAA playoff appearances, six conference championships, three Lambert Meadowlands Cup, three ECAC Team of the Year awards, three national semifinal appearances and the 2009 national championship. CAREW AWARD: Villanova University head football coach Andy Talley was recentlyhonored by "Be The Match operated by the National Marrow Donor Program" and earned the 2014 Rod Carew Leadership Award. Talley received the award at the Be The Match Gala in Minneapolis, Minn., on Friday, Sept. 12. The Rod Carew Leadership Award is given annually to a person or organization who makes a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families. It is named for Minnesota Twins Hall of Famer, Rod Carew, who raised national awareness of the need for marrow donors while searching for a donor for his daughter, Michelle. Past winners of the award include NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon, the anchor of ABC's Good Morning America Robin Roberts and Carew. Away from the football field, Talley dedicates most of his time to the Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation, as well as Be The Match. Through their joint initiative, "Get in the Game, Save a Life" (GITG), both organizations work in conjunction with college football teams nationwide to register potential marrow donors for the Be The Match Registry. Since 2008, with the help of over 50 colleges and universities, GITG has added over 52,000 donors to the national registry and is credited with providing 271 potential donor-patient matches. From the 271 donors, 194 were selected as patient's perfect match and continued on to provide a marrow transplant and second chance at life. GAME 3: NO. 8 VILLANOVA (1-1, 0-0) VS. JAMES MADISON (2-1, 0-0) SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2014 VILLANOVA STADIUM (12,000) VILLANOVA, PA. FORCING TURNOVERS: The Villanova defense snapped a streak of 447 consecutive plays without forcing a turnover when sophomore defensive end Austin Calitro intercepted a Fordham pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown with 4:51 to play in the second quarter. The streak began during last year’s game at Towson on Oct. 12, 2013 and consisted of six full games in addition to parts of two others. Villanova forced another turnover later in the game when safety Cameron McCurry recorded his fifth career interception. CHERRY LEADS THE WAY: The Villanova defense has been led in the early going of the season by junior linebacker Don Cherry. After two games, Cherry leads the Wildcats in tackles (16), tackles for loss (4) and sacks (3). In the win over Fordham in Sept. 6, he had a team-high seven tackles, including a career-high four tackles for loss and a career-best three quarterback sacks. As a sophomore last year, Cherry led the Wildcats in both tackles with 99 and tackle for loss with 12.5. For his efforts a season ago, Cherry was named second team All-CAA. MINUS YARDAGE: Villanova finished the Fordham game with 12 tackles for a loss of 51 yards and six quarterback sacks for a loss of 36 yards. This was the most tackles for loss by a Wildcat defense since having 13 at Rhode Island on Oct. 18, 2008 (44-7 win) and the most sacks since Villanova had seven at Maine on Sept. 29, 2012, in a 35-14 win. GROUNDED: In the team’s 50-6 win over Fordham on Sept. 6, the Wildcat defense held the Rams to just 18 net yards rushing on 27 carries. It was the fewest rushing yards allowed to an opponent since the Wildcats gave up just 17 yards rushing to Towson in a 43-7 victory on Sept. 18, 2010. THIRD DOWN CONVERSIONS: Villanova has been excellent on third downs in the first two games of the season. Entering play on Saturday against James Madison, the Wildcats have converted 63.0 percent on third down (22-of-35). Last year, Villanova was 50-of125 on third down for 40.0 percent. HIGH EXPECTATIONS: Villanova was picked to finish second in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in the league’s preseason poll. The poll is a vote by league head coaches, sports information directors and selected media members. The Wildcats, who earned two first place votes in the preseason poll, return 15 starters and 33 letterwinners from last year’s team that went 6-5 overall and 5-3 in CAA play. INDIVIDUAL RECOGNITION: Junior quarterback John Robertson has been named the CAA preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Robertson enters his third year as the Villanova starting signal caller in 2014. As a sophomore last season, Robertson completed 169of-247 for 1,957 yards to go with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also ran for a team-best 1,405 yards on 217 carries (6.5 avg.) and 20 touchdowns a season ago.

GAME 3: NO. 8 VILLANOVA (1-1, 0-0) VS. JAMES MADISON (2-1, 0-0) SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2014 VILLANOVA STADIUM (12,000) VILLANOVA, PA.

GAME 1 RECAP: SYRACUSE 27, NO. 12 VILLANOVA 26 (2OT) Aug. 29, 2014 Carrier Dome Syracuse, N.Y. SYRACUSE, N.Y.--In a gritty performance against an FBS and ACC opponent No. 12 Villanova was stifled on a two-point conversion attempt in the second overtime and fell by a final score of 27-26 to Syracuse in front of an announced crowd of 41,189 at the Carrier Dome. A game that featured the Wildcats second punt return for a touchdown in the last 30 years had no shortage of gut-wrenching momentum swings in the fourth quarter and the overtime periods before the host Orange pulled out a victory by the narrowest of margins. Junior quarterback John Robertson, who had 314 yards of total offense on the night, completed consecutive passes to junior running back Gary Underwood for a combined 20 yards on the final two offensive plays of the game. After an 11-yard completion on 3rd-and-5 from the 20-yard line, Robertson connected again and Underwood made a one-handed catch in the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown which pulled Villanova to within 27-26. Syracuse had the ball first in the second extra period and scored on a one-yard touchdown pass from punter Riley Dixon to tight end Kendall Moore on a fake field goal. In the two overtime periods the Orange ran nine goal-to-go plays, including seven from inside the five-yard line, and each time the Wildcats came up with potentially game-saving stops to thwart a touchdown. It was after those nine plays that Syracuse opted for the trick play, and Dixon’s touchdown pass put the Orange in front, 27-20. Villanova tried for heroics of its own after answering with a touchdown of its own. Robertson was stuffed on a quarterback sneak to end the game. Senior kicker Chris Gough kicked a 24-yard field goal to give the Wildcats a 20-17 lead in the first overtime period and the Orange answered with a 22-yard make by Ryan Norton after coming up inches short of a touchdown. Senior nose guard Pat Williams stopped running back Adonis Ameen-Moore on first-and-goal from the one and junior Jordan Hunter came up with an equally big stop for a three-yard loss on second down. The late-game excitement really started late in the third quarter when senior Poppy Livers returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown to cut into the Syracuse lead and get Villanova to within three points at 17-14 with 2:34 remaining in the third period. Livers also had a 66-yard punt return touchdown at Georgia State two years ago and is the only Wildcats player in the 30-year Andy Talley era to achieve the feat. His big return marked the first points for Villanova since early in the second quarter. On their ensuing possession after Livers’ touchdown the Orange went threeand-out and the Wildcats then ate up more than nine minutes of clock on a 19play, 80-yard drive which culminated with Gough kicking a game-tying 25-yard field goal with 7:14 to play in the fourth quarter. Syracuse went three-and-out again on its next possession and Villanova held the ball for nearly all of what was left in regulation. Gough had a 25-yard field goal attempt to win the game with 12 seconds to play but the kick was wide right. Robertson finished the game with 115 rushing yards on a career-high 34 carries and he also went 16-of-27 through the air for 199 yards and a touchdown. During the game he passed Vince Thompson (1975-78) and moved into third place in school history in rushing yards. Robertson has now rushed for 2,542 yards in his career and he also tallied his 11th career 100-yard rushing game. That is tied with Thompson for the second-most in school history. Senior running back Kevin Monangai ran for 46 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. His five-yard scoring run with 10:17 left in the second quarter got the Wildcats on the scoreboard and tied the game at 7-7. Livers had a team-high five receptions for 58 yards and finished with 138 all-purpose yards thanks to two punt returns totaling 80 yards, including the 67-yard return for a score. A terrific defensive effort by Villanova was led by junior linebacker Don Cherry, who had a team-high nine tackles and made two tackles for loss. During regulation the Wildcats held the ball for more than 37 minutes and Villanova finished the game with 87 offensive plays compared to 69 for the Orange.

VILLANOVA, Pa.--Led by 514 yards of total offense and another terrific defensive effort, Villanova looked dominant in a 50-6 victory over No. 11 Fordham in the Wildcats home opener at Villanova Stadium. Five different offensive players scored touchdowns for Villanova, which also got a pick-six from a defensive unit that finished the day with two interceptions, six sacks and 12 total tackles for loss without allowing a touchdown.

Scoring Summary: 1st 3:58 Villanova - John Robertson 20 yd run (Steve Weyler kick), 14-70 5:55, Villanova 7 - Fordham 0

Junior quarterback John Robertson threw for 216 yards and three touchdowns on 17-of-24 passing. He also ran for 61 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries before sitting out nearly the entire second half with the game’s outcome already well in hand. Senior wide receiver Poppy Livers led all players with eight receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Senior running back Austin Medley also caught a touchdown pass, while junior running back Gary Underwood and freshman running back Matt Gudzak each ran for scores.

2nd

The game was delayed due to lightning for just over an hour early in the second quarter. Villanova led 7-3 at the time of the delay and just before play was halted the Rams had used a timeout to mull a 4th-and-6 play from the Wildcats 36-yard line. The teams had just taken the field following the timeout when play was suspended with 13:49 to play in the second quarter. After the delay, Fordham went for it on fourth down and quarterback Michael Nebrich was sacked by senior nose guard Pat Williams as the Rams turned the ball over on downs. Villanova then went on to score 26 unanswered points in a span of 10:52 to end the half and take a commanding 33-3 lead into the locker rooms. Underwood scored on a one-yard touchdown run to cap an 11-play drive coming out of halftime and the Wildcats scored twice in the fourth quarter on a field goal by senior kicker Chris Gough and a 61-yard touchdown run by Gudzak on the second carry of his collegiate career. He had picked up five yards one play earlier on his first career run. Fordham was held to a 31-yard field goal by Micheal Marando in the first quarter and a 38-yard attempt by Marando just before the end of the third period. Nebrich completed 14-of-28 passes for 182 yards and two interceptions before coming out of the game late. Sam Ajala led the Rams with seven receptions for 95 yards. If the turning point of the game wasn’t the weather delay, it would have been the interception by sophomore defensive end Austin Calitro which was returned 35 yards for a touchdown with 4:51 left in the second quarter. That score stretched the Villanova lead to 26-3 but also ended a dubious streak for the Wildcats defense. Prior to the interception, Villanova had not forced a turnover by its opponents in a stretch of 447 plays. The streak dated back to the middle of last year’s game against Towson on October 12, 2013 and included six full games and parts of two others. Calitro registered the first interception and first touchdown of his career to snap the streak and junior safety Cameron McCurry tallied his fifth career interception and a 32-yard return later in the second quarter. Villanova started at its own 39-yard line after McCurry’s interception and Robertson threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Livers with 57 seconds remaining in the half to extend the lead to 33-3. Livers had caught a nine-yard touchdown pass earlier in the period and Medley had a 16-yard touchdown reception. Balanced production helped the Wildcats eventually run for exactly 300 yards in the contest. Three different players had at least 60 rushing yards and a total of six players ran for 28 or more yards. Underwood led the way with a careerhigh 75 yards and his first career rushing touchdown on eight carries. Gudzak needed only two runs to pick up 66 yards and Robertson added 61 yards. Medley ran for 34 yards on seven carries, senior running back Kevin Monangai picked up 29 yards and senior quarterback Chris Polony added 28 yards on four carries in relief of Robertson. Junior linebacker Don Cherry had career highs of four tackles for loss and three sacks to help lead the defensive effort. Williams, senior linebacker Joey Harmon and sophomore defensive tackle Tanoh Kpassagnon had one sack apiece.
