SEPTEMBER 2017 / ELK CALL

From the Station of Fidelity Can you believe that we are almost half way through our Elk year? Time flies when you are having a good time. I hope you are all having a good time this year. Let the good times roll! I enjoyed seeing many of you at the Opening Ceremony for the Orange Coast District Olympics. Rick Ross and crew did an outstanding job once again planning and getting participation from the other Lodges for this fun event. The final outcome is not known yet, but hopefully Garden Grove will prove to be triumphant again. Many thanks to all those involved in the Luau this year. It was very well received and a great time had by all. Our Lodge can be proud of these individuals and their efforts to support our Veterans in this way. Great job! Don’t forget our annual Rudy Kaul’s Night at the Races, and our Labor Day Festival in early September. There is still time for those who have not turned in your car tickets and Exalted Ruler donation to get in the drawing for the car. We need and appreciate your support. Come on down for a great day of music, food, and giveaways. Our next Initiation will be on Sept. 28. Once again I am asking for your attendance as we welcome more new members that night. Our membership is growing! A hearty welcome to all new members, and looking forward to many more this year. Be sure to check the calendar for September and October in this issue for any changes or updates that may have occurred so you don’t get left behind. Always Practice Fidelity, and Enjoy the Ride with Elkdom! Mark Mahoney

From the Station of Charity My Brothers and Sisters, As I mentioned in my August article, one of my major responsibilities as your Leading Knight, is organizing the annual Labor Day Family Fun Festival. This festival is a major fundraiser for our Lodge. I am hoping that all of you have already bought or sold your tickets for the Labor Day drawing for a brand new car. If you still have not done anything with your tickets, may I suggest that you fill out the stubs, put your member number on the back and bring them to the Labor Day Festival and drop them into the drawing hopper? It could be your lucky day. I am also hoping to obtain a large number of dedicated Elks and friends to help me run all of the events scheduled for that special day. When you see me, please let me know if you can volunteer and help. Esteemed In August, I started attending the new District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, R, C, Stoney Bourke’s visitations at several of the lodges in the Orange Coast District. The visitations will Leading Knight continue this month and our DDGER Stoney Bourke will be visiting our Lodge on Thursday, September 14th. It is my hope that we can fill our lodge room with members of our lodge and prove to other visitors what a great and active membership we have here in Garden Grove. Finally, I want to congratulate all of the winners of our Orange Coast District Annual Elks Olympic Games. This event, created and organized by our very own Past Exalted Ruler Rick Ross, It has been a wonderful and friendship bonding District event once again. I am so impressed by all of the talented members of our District. Thank you for supporting the Elks Olympics. So, start practicing for this event for next year. It will be here sooner than you may realize. God bless you all. And remember my members…“Be Charitable to All Mankind” Fraternally yours, Sherrie Larson Esteemed Leading Knight Editor reserves the right to edit the submissions for Grammar, Punctuation, and Content as space allows. Greetings From the Station of Justice Welcome fellow Elk friends,

We are already half way thru our Elk Calendar year and we’ve made some great strides with building membership and gaining new lodge friends. We need to continue the momentum to not only initiate new members, but I’d like to ask all of our members to be sure to participate in lodge activities as much as we all can. We need our members to make an effort to visit the lodge at least twice a week. Join us for lunch during the week; come to our lodge meetings and for our special backyard events and ticketed events. Don’t forget our extra weekly activities ~ Darts and Horseshoes on Mondays, Karaoke & Family Night on Wednesdays, Friday Fun Nights in the Sports Room (Patio Bar), BBQ Saturdays as well as our recently added Pool Tournament Saturday Nights. Participating at the lodge will build strength of our lodge’s future. Keep happy, stay active within the lodge. Our 14th Annual Hot August Days Show was very well attended.  We had an awesome team that worked very hard to make it a success!  There were many cars and motorcycles entered, several Esteemed vendor booths, raffle prizes, and a large number of volunteers.  Miss Southland sang the National Loyal Knight Anthem, and two young ladies from the Garden Grove Miss Court handed out trophies.  The Bay City Rodders Car Club turned out once again to support our event with the Bloody Mary & Mimosa Bar and judged all the show entries!  A task that is not very easy.  So, again, thanks to everyone who volunteered that day, and a special thanks to all those who donated cash to support the event, and to those who created and donated the great raffle baskets and prizes!  What a great day it was, kudos to everyone. Our ENF Fundraiser and 30th Annual “Night at the Races” is happening on Saturday, September 2nd. There are still a few seats left for this event, so act fast and call the lodge to make your reservation, or see Bertha Smith. To our new members ~ ENF is the Elk’s National Foundation and its mission is to help Elks build stronger communities. ENF fulfills this pledge by investing in communities where Elks live and work. ENF helps youth develop lifelong skills, sends students to college, meets the needs of today’s veterans, supports the charitable work of the state’s Elks associations, and fund projects that improve the quality of life in local Elks communities. Since inception in 1928 through March 31, 2017, the Elk’s National Foundation has granted a total of $42,090,088.44 to California/Hawaii, compared with our total donations of $38,102,736.67. That’s a ratio of 1.105 for every dollar the Foundation has received from California and Hawaii combined. Elks Care ~ Elks Share. Remember my brothers and sisters…“Be Just to Your Fellow Man”

Sincerely, Anthony Manzo Your All State Esteemed Loyal Knight

Greetings From the Station of Brotherly Love Hello brothers and sisters of Elkdom. This summer has been a busy season for the lodge. The month of August was no exception. We started with the District Games, which was another exceptional event that brought many members from the Orange Coast District together to enjoy healthy competition. Once again, your Garden Grove lodge was well represented and many gold, silver, and bronze medals were won. A huge thanks, and recognition, goes out to PER, Rick Ross for championing the games. If you didn’t participate, make sure that you sign-up for next year’s games. The competition is getting tougher and we need all the help we can get to keep the Games trophy where it belongs, in the Garden Grove lodge trophy case. Soon after the District Games, the Military and Veteran Support Luau took place and for those who attended, I would like to give huge thanks for supporting our military. I am sure that you enjoyed the Kalua pig, music, and entertainment during this festive day at the lodge. Many people worked hard to make this event happen and to those I would like to personally thank for their hard work and dedication to Brotherly Love. I am sure your Loyal Esteemed Knight will mention the Car Show, which was another well planned and attended event. Congrats to all those who make the event happen. Lecturing Knight This Month I would like to recognize a new member who came into our lodge and began to work on getting our sound booth up to the 21st century. Dean Johnson has been a vital member of this lodge. He updated the sound booth with new amplifiers, speakers, and microphones. If you have been to the lodge lately, you will surely notice the sound difference in the lodge room. Dean also worked on getting new phone and data cabling into the lodge, which immediately helped with our credit card machines and will work on our future phone system. When you see Dean, thank him for all the work he has done and will do to better our lodge. All these events are for the membership to enjoy and to help drive future new members to join. If you come to one of the lodge events, why not invite a guest so they can see that we are not just a drinking lodge. Future new members will be excited to join if the see that we are all having a good time and we are also putting our benevolence into action by helping those less fortunate. And, as always my friends…….” Ever Practice Brotherly Love”. Tony Lopez Esteemed Lecturing Knight PAGE 4

Emblem Club President’s Message

Location: Vista Elks Lodge 1968 Vista, CA

There was a lot going on last month, but we got through it with flying colors. Special thanks to LuAnn Barrows and her team for a successful ice cream social on the 9th. And, a special thanks to Cindy DeCou for the dinner and ice cream social for the State President’s visit. It was Emblem Club a pleasure to welcome Evelyn President Godinez, her Officers, and all the special people who attended for the evening. Good job, Ladies. Now we are looking forward to the Convention in New Orleans. As I lived there for several years before returning to California I am sure I will see a lot of changes. Still, it is New Orleans, and I have no doubt there will be plenty to do. We leave on the 3rd of September so we will not be here to celebrate Labor Day. I am sure Joanne Zapata and her team will have everything in hand. These Ladies always do a terrific job when they take on an event. Please come down and enjoy the day with your Emblem Sisters and the Elks. Remember to save the date of September 16 for the Emblem Birthday Luncheon.; this is always a fun day. Contact Chairman, Cindy DeCou for details. Try to stay cool and if where you are is air conditioned, DON’T FORGET TO DANCE. Nancy Clark President

Elk of the Month for August, 2017 – Pete Zappella Pete has shown a strong desire to become involved in helping our Lodge. He became involved in our Lodge’s activities right away, and became a member of our Entertainment Committee. Pete came up with and implemented a Talent Show that involved all the Lodges in our Orange Coast District, which was hugely successful and well received. Pete already has plans underway for the next edition of this show. Pete is always ready and willing to jump in and help out when asked or the need arises. It is my pleasure to congratulate Pete Zappella as our September Elk of the Month for his dedication and willingness to help our Lodge. SEPTEMBER 2017 / ELK CALL

Wagon masters: Joe & Pat Spychaj, Jerry & Kathi Tretter Glenn & Margo Dobbs, Howard Whittaker and Cathy Van Bruggen Twenty rigs enjoyed a fun filled weekend of games and a good time July 25th to 30th, 3 rigs on Tuesday, 8 rigs on Wednesday, 9 on Thursday. Those arriving by Thursday were able to participate in the Vista Lodge’s “Cook your own” special outdoor event. After diner we played L-R-C on the patio with Avo Joe being the big winner and maybe getting paid for his parking job which finally worked out because the Vista camp host was on vacation and never left a current list. J.R. & Barbara Cortez had to be squeezed in with no sewer, but ended up smiling with the lower parking rate. Friday morning “Buzzy’s Bar opened at 8 a.m. with appropriate libations to ensure a well-rounded breakfast and the start of the day’s activities. At 1 p.m. Howard & Cathy furnished margaritas for all. In keeping with a well-established Elk Ender tradition Happy Hour and lite appetizers were enjoyed. At 2 p.m. we all enjoyed a special treat from Kathi Tretter’s Buffalo milk. We had dinner in the Lodge, a tasty catered Italian dinner by the Lodge, and sang Happy Anniversary to the Dooley’s. After dinner we played Screw Your Neighbor on the patio with Jim Young 1st, Channing came in 2nd, Cheri Racke was 3rd. They all donated their winnings to the Purple Pig. We then played L-R C again with Howard winning this time. Saturday morning Buzz’s Bar again was a huge success and we all enjoyed a wonderful pot luck breakfast, and some members went down town to the National BBQ cook off. Not sure how many went but Don Quijada and Joe enjoyed it. Howard & Cathy again mixed margaritas for all and at 5pm we again had another Happy Hour and Heavy appetizers. Jerry Tretter provided a special desert that was enjoyed by all. Then, came the meeting; Jerry and Eileen both spoke. Joe presented Buzz Dobbs with a special award for 5 years of contributions at Buzz’s Bar. Bud Preston was the Sheriff and fined everyone. Buzz, Kathi, Howard & Jerry again donated all the ingredients and their time for everyone to enjoy. All the money collected went to the Purple Pig. We collected a total of $246 dollars. Next time we can vote to give to the Lodge maintenance fund. The evening closed with another campfire and tall tales and of course true stories. By a vote no coffee or sweets were served on Sunday. Thanks to Joe Spychaj for this article. PAGE 5

Biography of

R.C. “Stoney” Bourke

Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, Orange Coast District 2017-2018

R.C. “Stoney” Bourke was born in Chelsea, Mass on October 2, 1944. Stoney is an only child with 9 half brothers and sisters. His parents were divorced when he was 2 and he was relocated to Topeka, Kansas with his father and later moved to Wichita, Kansas. During his early years, he was raised by a couple different stepmoms. At the age of 17, Stoney dropped out of high school and picked up odd jobs here and there until the age of twenty at which time he decided he needed to do something productive with his life. California-Hawaii Elks Major Project, Inc. An Informative Message from Your Lodge Bequests and Living Trusts Committee Chairman Kevin Perkins PER

The BLT Benefactor Program Making Charitable Giving Affordable The BLT Benefactor Program encourages people to give to the Major Project. It makes it easy and affordable for everyone to give. Anyone, member or non-member alike, making a minimum present of $1,000 will automatically become a BLT Benefactor. However, if one were to make a deferred gift through a Will, Living Trust, Bank Account, Insurance Policy, or other means, there is NO MINIMUM amount. You may designate any amount with which you now feel comfortable to become a BLT Benefactor IMMEDIATELY and add more to it later as circumstances allow. As a BLT Benefactor, you will receive a beautiful oak-framed certificate and a distinctive triangular BLT lapel pin to wear with pride. SAMPLE CLAUSE: “I give to the California-Hawaii Elks Major Project, Inc., a non-profit corporation, the sum of (name the dollar amount) or, (insert the description or other real or personal property you may wish to give).” When you have added a gift to the Major Project in your financial instrument, please take a minute to let me know. Fill out the form below, and give it to me so I can ensure you and the Lodge get proper credit. In return, you will receive a beautiful BLT certificate and BLT lapel in. Wear the pin with pride!
