Gate Fees Trends 2015 Save £1 With Energy From Waste!

Since the Chancellor ended the automatic addition of £8 per tonne on Landfill Tax, landfill costs have stabilised, whereas Energy from Waste (EfW) has continued to creep upwards. The consequence is that whether your waste goes to landfill or to EfW, there is precious little difference in it from a commercial point of view. The recycling of segregated waste, on the other hand, continues to present a better option, as shown in the chart above. The Gate Fees for organic wastes (food waste, green waste) has remained stable for a number of years, at around half the cost of sending material to landfill or EfW. This is largely because the two technologies (Anaerobic Digestion and In-Vessel Composting) are locked in competition for diminishing food waste feedstock, while the number of AD sites around the country continues to grow. The market prediction is that Gate Fees for food waste, therefore, are set to head downwards over the next few years. If you are sending large volumes of waste to landfill or to EfW (either direct combustion or for processing into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF)) then you may wish to explore whether there are better and more innovative options for your bulk waste such as possible Industrial Symbiosis solutions - get in touch. www.link2energy.co.uk The data presented is taken from WRAP’s latest Gate Fee report, available from WRAP website www.wrap.org.uk
