Introduction Last year SFC published our Gender Action Plan. In it we committed to hold a ‘year on’ conference to bring together representatives from the sector to reflect on progress and share plans for improvement. We will be holding this conference on 4 December 2017 at the Hilton Edinburgh Carlton and will be publishing our first annual progress report on the implementation of the plan at the event. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Outline of day The format of the day is set out on page 5. It includes keynote addresses by Dr Mike Cantlay, Chair of SFC and Zoe Thomson, Depute Headteacher of Woodmill School. The conference will be an opportunity to hear from SFC about how implementation has progressed over the past year; to hear a school perspective on working in partnership; and SFC priorities for action for the coming year, as well as to take part in workshops focused on sharing good practice. There will also be the opportunity for networking. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who should attend? This event is targeted at representatives from colleges and universities and relevant organisations with an interest in this area. Please note places are limited, therefore interest should be coordinated within institutions and organisations. This is a free event. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Registration details Register for the conference online at: www.sfc.ac.uk/gendernationalconference. Please note, registration will close on Friday 24 November 2017. Applications to attend after this date cannot be guaranteed. 2

These recommendations can be found in Preventing and responding to Violence Against Women (VAW) in Scottish HE. Further details to be confirmed shortly. Workshop 2: Working in Partnership with Students to Address Gender Imbalances at subject level: NUS Scotland and West College Scotland This session will consider how colleges and universities can work effectively with students to implement the actions in their Gender Actions Plans and facilitate long term change. their implementation over the coming year, including the support required, both at an institutional and national level. Facilitated by Rachel Adamson or Fiona Burns, Scottish Funding Council Workshop 5: What does “Supporting Success” look like?: Equate Scotland In this workshop we will discuss the fifth theme of the gender action plan; supporting success, what does a “gender inclusive environment” look like and how do we assess for it? How can we best support students through networks and give them insights to non-stereotypical industries? We will discuss and generate ideas on how we support students beyond matriculation so they stay in non-stereotypical careers. This session will be led by Equate Scotland, as such the emphasis is on women into STEM, however examples will be used and discussed on men into non-traditional roles. Workshop 6: Addressing retention / completion and attainment gaps As part of their gender action plans, Colleges and Universities are asked to address gender retention / completion and attainment gaps. In this workshop, we will explore the available data on gender retention / completion and attainment disparities and focus in particular on the impact of intersectionality on these areas. We will also consider how institutions might address these gaps, sharing good practice and considering ways forward. Facilitated by Pauline Hanesworth (Academic Lead, Equality and Diversity / TEF, Higher Education Academy) and David Bass (Scotland Programme Manager, Equality Challenge Unit) Workshop 7: Mind the GAP!: City of Glasgow College This workshop will provide an overview of how City of Glasgow College responded to the questions posed in the Scottish Funding Council’s Developing Gender Action Plans: April 2017 Guidance when developing its Gender Action Plan 2017-2021. Following a presentation, participants will be encouraged to discuss, reflect upon and share their experience of how Colleges and Universities have:     

Identified and prioritised the focus of action plans. Secured leadership and accounted for different drivers and perspectives. Aligned activity with Strategy/Policy and considered required infrastructure. Translated planning into action through targeted activities, capacity building and student involvement. Planned to monitor and evaluate progress, whilst reviewing and updating action plans.
