Come along to a literary celebration featuring tutors and participants in a very special series of creative writing workshops. Starting in December 2016 with support from the Aber Fund, the English and Creative Writing Department at Aberystwyth University has been offering a series of two creative writing workshops each month free of charge for the public. Professor Matthew Francis of the English and Creative Writing Department organises the series, and tutors for the sessions are drawn from postgraduate students in the English and Creative Writing Department. We have been delighted to see that the free workshops have brought together members of the wider community as well as the university, for a rich and rewarding creative experience. The evening will start off with a reception and include readings by participants to share the fiction or poetry they wrote in response to workshop activities. Tutors will also read from their own work. Do come along to the Old College with its Hogwarts atmosphere to hear what these experienced and budding writers have produced.

Dr Hywel Griffiths, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University has won the Chair at the 2015 National Eisteddfod of Wales. The Chair is presented for an ode written in strict meter and is one of the Eisteddfod’s most prestigious awards. Hywel’s success at this year’s Eisteddfod follows his success at winning the Crown in 2008 when the National Eisteddfod was held in Cardiff. He has also won the Urdd National Eisteddfod Chair on two occasions.  

Bu Eurig yn gymrawd ymchwil yng Nghanolfan Uwchastudiaethau Cymraeg a Cheltaidd Prifysgol Cymru, Aberystwyth, lle y bu’n gweithio ar brosiectau Cyfres Beirdd yr Uchelwyr, Prosiect Guto’r Glyn, a phrosiect Cwlt y Seintiau yng Nghymru. Ers mis Medi 2015 mae’n ddarlithydd mewn Ysgrifennu Creadigol yn Adran y Gymraeg ac Astudiaethau Celtaidd ym Mhrifysgol Aberystwyth. Hydref 28 October Our Lady of Shadows (am ddim / free of charge) 11:30-12:00 Theatr Castell / Castle Theatre A work-in-progress showing of Lucy Gough’s radio play, Our Lady of Shadows, a radical adaptation of Tennyson’s famous poem, ‘The Lady of Shalott’. Cathrine is a medieval nun trapped in a tower for life. Her only access to the outer world is the flickering image of a camera obscura. As she battles with her inner demons, memories past and megalomaniac dreams, she desperately attempts to paint a more habitable world, a virtual haven, a palace of imagination. The work combines dramatic text, physical performance, digital scenography, painting, animation and music in an intermedial exploration of the tenuous pact between reality and imagination.   

Hydref 28 October Writing workshop for children “Build a Hero” (am ddim / free of charge) 13:00-13:30 Neuadd Fawr / Great Hall Sarah Todd Taylor What do you think makes a great hero? Do you want to get started writing your own stories? Join children’s writer, Sarah Todd Taylor for a workshop and we’ll create some new heroes and send them on an adventure. Sarah Todd Taylor is a children’s writer based in Wales. Her first book, Arthur and Me, won the Firefly Press Children’s Book Competition and was published in 2014. Poetry workshop “The Conditions For Music” (am ddim / free of charge) 13:30-15:00 Neuadd Fawr / Great Hall Damian Gorman Damian Gorman is a writer and encourager of other people’s writing who has been working with groups for over 30 years. His own work has garnered many awards and accolades. Although as a poet he has tended to work on stage and screen, he is one of the poets featured in the seminal vellum manuscript, The Great Book of Ireland, acquired by University College Cork in 2013. He was awarded an MBE for services to the arts, and is a Creative Associate of the IAH (the Institute for Arts and Humanities) here in Aber. In “The Conditions For Music” he wants to focus on what makes for music in our poetry, and how we might look to ensure its presence and develop it in our work. Croeso i bawb. All welcome.

Fiction workshop “Using Research in Fiction Writing” (am ddim / free of charge) 15:00-16:00 Neuadd Fawr / Great Hall Alice Vernon Alice Vernon is a Creative Writing PhD student and part-time tutor at Aberystwyth University. She recently won the 18 – 25 category in the 2016 Daniel Owen Writing Competition, and her reviews have appeared in New Welsh Review. Her thesis involves interdisciplinary research that draws together literary fiction and popular science journalism. This workshop will encourage you to use research to inform and inspire your fiction writing. “Shared Voices” Reading by Word Distillery and Sound Studio Poets (am ddim / free of charge) 15:00-16:00 Theatr / Theatre Shared Voices is a joint reading by Word Distillery and Sound Studio poets of their own work interspersed with that of celebrated poets. The Sound Studio Poetry Group meet weekly at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre to workshop individuals’ writing and receive feedback on their work through relaxed and informal discussion. The Word Distillery is a long-established group of local poets based at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre who hold monthly workshops, perform their work there from time to time and on tour. English and Creative Writing Society Student Showcase The English and Creative Writing Society is an enthusiastic gathering of students at Aberystwyth University who enjoy and promote all things literary. We host a range of inclusive events throughout the year; from writer’s talks to poetry slams which aims to inspire people through their academic career.

Katherine Stansfield grew up on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. She moved to Wales in 2002 to study at Aberystwyth University where she worked as a lecturer in Creative Writing for several years. She now teaches for the Open University and the School of Continuing and Professional Education at Cardiff University. She works as a mentor for Literature Wales, and from September 2017 she will be the new Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Cardiff University. She is a poet and fiction writer, represented by Sam Copeland at Rogers, Coleridge and White Literary Agency. Her new novel Falling Creatures, based on a real life murder on Bodmin Moor in 1844, is out now with Allison & Busby. The sequel, The Magpie Tree, will be published in March 2018. Her debut The Visitor was published by Parthian in 2013. It went on to win the fiction prize at the 2014 Holyer an Gof awards. Playing House, a poetry collection, was published by Seren in 2014. It includes ‘Canada’, Poem of the Week in The Guardian online. Born in Dorset, he now lives in Cardiff with his girlfriend and their growing board game collection. His short fiction has appeared in numerous markets, links to

He is the author of several books and his short fiction has appeared in a wide range of magazines and anthologies, including New Welsh Review, Prairie Fire, and PRISM: International. He has received a number of awards for his work, most notably The Missouri Review’s Jeffrey E. Smith Editors’ Prize, the Wales Book of the Year People’s Prize, and the Writers’ Trust of Canada / McClelland and Stewart Journey Prize. Among other things, he has worked as a landscaper, tree planter, and ice barge deckhand; he is now a Lecturer in Creative Writing at Cardiff University. Innovations £8/6 20:15-22:00 Theatr / Theatre The festival concludes with a reading by leading poets and prose writers from around the UK: Zoë Skoulding, Richard Beard, and David Harsent. Zoë Skoulding is primarily a poet, though her work encompasses soundbased vocal performance, collaboration, translation, literary criticism, editing, and teaching creative writing. She lectures in the School of English at Bangor University, and has been Editor of the international quarterly Poetry Wales. Her recent collections of poems are The Museum of Disappearing Sounds (Seren, 2013), Remains of a Future City (Seren, 2008), long-listed for Wales Book of the Year 2009, and The Mirror Trade (Seren, 2004). Her collaborative publications include Dark Wires with Ian Davidson (West House Books, 2007) and From Here, with Simonetta Moro (Dusie, 2008). She is a member of the collective Parking Non-Stop, whose CD Species Corridor, combining experimental soundscape with poetry and song, was released on the German label Klangbad in 2008. You Will Live in Your Own Cathedral is a multimedia soundscape, video and poetry performance with Alan Holmes that has been presented across Europe in several languages including Slovak, German, Slovenian, Czech, Greek, Norwegian and Danish. Richard Beard’s six novels include Lazarus is Dead, Dry Bones and Damascus, which was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. In the UK he has been shortlisted for the BBC National Short Story Award and longlisted for the Sunday Times EFG Private Bank Short Story Award. His latest novel Acts of the Assassins was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize in 2015. He is also the author of four books of narrative non-fiction, including his 2017 memoir The Day That Went Missing. Formerly Director of The National Academy of Writing in London, he is a Visiting Professor (2016/17) at the University of Tokyo, and has a Creative Writing Fellowship at the University of East Anglia. In 2017 he is a juror for Canada’s Scotiabank Giller Prize. http://www.richardbeard.info/ David Harsent is a poet and librettist. He has published twelve volumes of poetry. Legion won the Forward Prize for best collection 2005; Night (2011) was triple short-listed in the UK and won the Griffin International Poetry Prize. Fire Songs (2014) won the T.S. Eliot Prize. His most recent collection, Salt, was published in October this year. Harsent has collaborated with a number of composers, though most often with Harrison Birtwistle. Birtwistle/Harsent collaborations have been performed at the Royal Opera House, BBC Proms, the Aldeburgh Festival, The Concertgebouw, The London South Bank Centre, The Salzburg Festival, the Holland Festival, the Megaron (Athens) and Carnegie Hall. An oratorio – The Judas Passion (music by Sally Beamish) had its world premiere in London in August 2017. Subsequent performances were given in San Francisco. Harsent holds several fellowships, among them Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and Fellow of the Hellenic Authors Society.
