The DAV works to promote the legal profession in Germany. The membership to the DAV is voluntary for practicing lawyers in Germany.

Some local branches of the DAV provide 24 emergency telephone hotlines with criminal lawyers who provide legal assistance after arrest. Many also organise pro-bono clinics which provide quick legal advice free of charge.

Petitions Committee is in place to receive comments, suggestions and complaints from members of the public about all aspects of public bodies and their functions. Anybody can petition, including foreigners and prisoners. Comments, suggestions and complaints can also be made by a third party on their behalf.
