Why an eBook on Periscope? This eBook is for YOU. To get you started on Periscope – the video live streaming application from Twitter – a tool with huge potential for your marketing and business objectives. Periscope is a strong player in yet another phase of social media networks. The concept is not new but the convenience and ease the app provides makes it highly tractable. My team and I played around with Periscope a lot recently and learnt that people are hesitant on how to use this. So here we are to help you out!

Why Periscope over other tools? Live video streaming is not new. We have apps like Skype, Meerkat and Google Hangout that offer live video streaming. So why talk about Periscope? For one, Periscope has been acquired by Twitter. That alone adds to its potential and possible usage down the road. It is also much easier and cleaner to use. Install, set up & go! The slightly older Meerkat is Periscope‟s closest competitor and has a significant user base from its popularity at SXSW 2015. But with Twitter‟s clout and financial backing, Periscope could well be the frontrunner. And as winners go, it‟s good to know them better! PS: Periscope is available on iOS 7.1 and above and Android 4.4 and above devices. Replays can be viewed on desktop by clicking on the Periscope link and clicking Play.

Periscope etiquette is good to know Periscope etiquette • Get permission before you broadcast anyone else‟s show. •

Privacy is an important factor. Make sure you inform and get permission before broadcasting a public or closed event.

Be courteous and respect others.

Observation on the Indian audience Expect more passive viewers if the periscope is for the Indian audience. The viewers seem to be shy to interact though analytics from Scopes will show you did have a good number of views.

Tips on the broadcast preliminaries Notify people about the broadcast Enable Twitter to notify your followers whenever you broadcast. Copy the URL via the Periscope app and share it on SMS, email, Whatsapp, etc. • Use a headphone to reduce background noise. And use a small mic so people can hear what you are saying. • Ensure the lighting is bright – either outside or arrange for soft lighting inside a room. • Use a tripod to keep the phone steady (unless you‟re on a hot air balloon or bungee jumping!

Tips on the broadcast structure • Keep the broadcast short & sweet, making the first 5 -15 seconds interesting. Remember attention spans are getting shorter! • Make it personal, intriguing and short. • Make the title of the broadcast compelling as that‟s what comes up on lists when people search. Use smiley emoticons and the like to make it funkier. • If you don‟t want the Periscope to be available for replay, make sure you delete it. • The first shot of the video (focus) serves as the thumbnail for the broadcast.

Deleting a Periscope Go to the broadcast, scroll all the way down and tap Delete Replay.

While hosting the broadcast •

Interact with people as they join – welcome them by name, ask about their interests and questions they have.

Give people time to join but keep the rest interested.

Keep pointers to stay on theme.

Ask viewers to help each other out via the chat as you won‟t be able to type in, yourself. Arrange for this beforehand.

Keep interacting with viewers through the broadcast. Block spam, rude or pervert users.

If you are broadcasting a live event, maybe you can‟t talk. Use paper notes and other visuals for your messages.

Periscope with a purpose •

Before concluding the broadcast, announce some call to action. Point participants to a website, channel, etc.

If broadcasting a lecture, have someone take down the questions and answer their questions at the end or during breaks, one-on-one if you can.

Ask followers or public to share, interact, ask and answer questions.

Keep in mind You can use both front and rear cameras by double tapping. The screen may blank out for a few seconds before the broadcast is resumed. Zoom in when focusing on something at a distance for the sake of viewers.

Sharing some of my observations After 150 Periscopes, these are some things I‟ve found: • It helps to follow people on Periscope. You get notified when they periscope. •

If you‟re looking for a global audience, Periscoping between 8-10am (Indian Standard Time) works well versus afternoon. The time slot of 7-9pm works better for Indian audiences but again, varies from city to city. You need to test.

Average viewership for our broadcasts was 150, with most viewed at 750 for the periscope Digital Marketers asking questions to Suresh. It was broadcast at 7.30pm for 35 minutes.

Tutorials, how-to kind of broadcasts work well. Viewers are even willing to wait for Part 2 of the session. Some broadcasts went up to 1 hour or more on topics such as How search engines work and how it’s changed.

Return viewers? Still early to say.

Consistency and quality, valuable content works.

After the Periscope broadcast •

Broadcast hosts can save broadcasts to their camera folder; auto-save is available. The video can be made available on YouTube (without viewer interaction though).

Once you stop the broadcast, wait for it to buffer a few seconds for auto-save to work.

On Periscope Analytics The analytics from Periscope is not perfect. Hopefully we‟ll get more details on the engagement in the coming weeks or months. Retention: Percentage of total viewers who watched your broadcast from beginning to end. If someone popped in for a few seconds and dropped out, they are not part of this count. Total Viewers: The total number of viewers from iOS and Android apps. This doesn’t include web viewers which is a bummer. It doesn‟t give you a complete picture of viewership. Time watched: Total amount of time viewers watched your broadcast. If 2 people watched 30 minutes of your broadcast, the total time will be 1 hour (60 minutes).
