The barony of Erris is located on the north west coast of Co. Mayo in Ireland. Erris is a Gaeltacht region, which means that our native language is still used here, allowing you to experience an Ireland of old. A hidden gem with breathtaking rural scenery, Erris is an outstanding cultural and natural heritage destination.

Erris is a Gaeltacht area. This means that the Irish language (Gaeilge) is spoken here and many of our road signs are in Irish. This can sometimes be confusing for visitors, so before you visit us, please download a list of translated placenames from our website,

At the four corners of Erris, you’ll find: the Neolithic Céide Fields, the unspoilt wilderness of Ballycroy National Park, the towering cliffs at Ceann Iorrais (Erris Head), and the final resting place of the fabled ‘Children of Lir’ – the island of Inis Gluaire.
