PROF DAN KGWADI V ICE-CH AN CE LLOR | VISEKANSELIER | MOTLATSAMOKA N S E LI R I Welcome to the North-West University! May this Reception and Orientation programme succeed in smoothing your entry into university life.

Welkom by die Noordwes-Universiteit!

Student life will probably be a very different experience from that which you are used to. You will need to accept new responsibilities and develop much greater self reliance. This may be challenging. I do though have good news for you.

You are now part of a larger NWU community. Whether you reside in a university residence, a flat or other private accommodation, you are just as much a part of the NWU as any other student. This is your new home. Our academics and support staff are all here to provide a caring and supportive environment for you. Please make use of the services we offer. Come and discuss any challenges with us. We are really here to assist you. Engage with fellow-students and be part of student life in all its many facets. Never think that this is only meant for others. You have made it to here; now grab every good opportunity university life offers. Of course I have to remind you that in final analysis your academic success takes priority. We want you to succeed, but you have to take co-responsibility for this. When classes start, stay focused and try not to be overwhelmed. Attend classes faithfully. Tackle each assignment or project without delay, but pace yourself. This is a marathon, not a 100-meters sprint. Keep running. Remember, it all starts here – but only if you participate. My best wishes accompany each and every first-year.

Jy is nou deel van ‘n groter NWU-gemeenskap. Of jy nou in ‘n universiteitskoshuis, ‘n woonstel of ander privaat akkommodasie tuisgaan, jy is net soveel deel van die NWU as enige ander student. Woon klasse getrou by. My allerbeste wense aan elke enkele eerstejaar.

THOKOZANI HADEBE SR C PR ESID ENT | VSR-PRESIDENT | MOPERESIDENTE WA S R C Dear student

Beste student

Moithuti yo o rategang

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the North-West University. Being a student and a member of the NWU community is indeed a privilege.

Re go amogela ka boitumelo mo Yunibesiting ya Bokone-Bophirima. Gape ke ka rata go go lakaletsa masego ka tshiamelo e o e amogetseng gore o kgone go nna moithuti le leloko la morafe wa YBB.

A wise man by the name of Rabindranath Tagore once said, “The highest education is that which does not merely give us information, but makes our life in harmony with all existence”.

With that in mind, I greet you all. Students of the North-West University have chosen one of the best institutions, which aims to not only provide you with information, but also to make your life at university one of the greatest experiences of your life.

Gaining entry into any university remains a challenge; it is therefore your duty to ensure that you seize every opportunity that is placed at your disposal. Walk in at every door that is opened to you and use all available resources to expand your horizons, and where you are met with challenges, push your boundaries as far as it is safe for you to do. The next four years of your stay at the NWU are not only to give you a qualification, but also to groom you into becoming an important influence in respect of positive change in society. Do not sacrifice your social life as a young person for your academic life. It is important to make the acquaintance of people who will support and encourage you, because no man is an island. Live your life to the full; just remember to strike a balance. With determination and the end-goal ever before you, strive to be the best student that you can be and enjoy the best years of your life. May you prosper in all your aspirations and enjoy being a part of the NWU. SRC President and SCC Chairperson: Vaal Triangle Campus

NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY In the period from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, the people of the North-West Province took the initiative and raised the sum of R100 000 as a contribution to the establishment of a university.

The Mafikeng Campus has proud roots in the North-West Province and close ties with its people.

Initially, their institution was known as the University of Bophuthatswana. Then, after the democratic change that took place in South Africa in 1994, the university community voted by popular ballot to change the name to University of the NorthWest.

The Theological School of the Reformed Churches in South Africa (GKSA) was established in Burgersdorp in 1869 with two lecturers and five students. Early in 1877 a literary department was established with a specific assignment to

In 1919 the Literary Department was separated from the Theological School and “Het Potchefstroom Universiteitskollege voor Christelike Hooger Onderwijs” (PUK) came into being as a higher education institution independent from the GKSA. In 1921, the Potchefstroom University College was incorporated with the University of South Africa and lost the “Christian Higher Education” part of the as part of Higher Education (PU for CHE) began presenting refresher courses for cost accountants in the Vaal Triangle on request. Three years later, in 1969, lecturers commuting from Potchefstroom began presenting a part-time BCom degree in Vanderbijlpark - the beginning of the Vaal Triangle Campus.

The Vaal Triangle Campus has a rare claim to fame: it was established by popular demand from business and industry around Vanderbijlpark, a growth hotspot in Gauteng Province. It all started in 1966 when the Potchefstroom University for Christian

In 1977 full-time lectures began on this campus, with six permanent lecturers for 52 students. The campus’s name officially changed to the Vaal Triangle Campus in 1983. In this year construction began on the

Finally, in 2004 - exactly a decade after the advent of democracy in our country – the university became the Mafikeng Campus of the newly created North-West University. Today, the Mafikeng Campus is the second-largest NWU campus and it is the alma mater of numerous top Southern African business and sports leaders.

their name. After repeated efforts, the PUK managed to get back the “Christian Higher Education” part of the part of their name. In 1951 the PUK was recognised as an independent university known as the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (PU for CHE). The first issue of the Wapad Student Newspaper was published on 12 April 1946. In 2004, the PU for CHE became the Potchefstroom Campus of the newly established NWU.

banks of the Vaal River and the first professors in the Faculty of Engineering were appointed. In 1984, student numbers grew to 1140 students. One year later in 1985, the first two men’s residences were build on this campus and within the next two years there was capacity to accommodate 185 students in residences. The first democratic election for the Student Representative Council was held in 1994. At the time of the merger in 2004, student numbers grew to 3038.

2002 Prof Kadar Asmal, Minister of Education, announced that the University of North-West (UNW) and the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education must amalgamate and that the staff and students of the Sebokeng campus of the Vista University must be incorporated into the new institution. On 1 October Council meetings of the PU for CHE and the UNW suggested in a presentation to the Minister of Education that: • a new tertiary institution must be created; and that • an interim council be compiled from both councils.

2003 In April the Minister of Education announced guidelines according to which the amalgamation and incorporation of higher education institutions must take place. On 20 June the councils of the PU for CHE and the UNW agree that: • The name of the new institution would be North-West University (NWU);and that • The institutional seat would be located in Potchefstroom.

2004 On 1 January the North-West University was established by the amalgamation of the University of North-West (UNW), its Mankwe Campus, the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (PU for CHE) and its Vaal Triangle Campus as a single institution with multi- campuses. The staff and students of the Sebokeng Campus of the Vista University were incorporated with the North-West University on 2 January.

2014 Celebrate 10 years of existence of the NWU.

2015 A new strategy for the NWU was approved by the Council on 20 November 2015.

2017 Council approves a new unitary colour. The NWU Student Representative Council and Student Campus Councils are constituted.
