GIN TIMELINE 17th Century

Mid 16th Century

Late 17th Century

Jenever

Old Tom

Sloe Gin

Jenever is the ancestor of what we now know as gin. Originally made in Holland as a cure for stomach ailments; distilled malt wine was flavoured with juniper as it was thought to have health benefits. The spirit was brought over to the UK in the time of William of Orange who wanted to promote the drink of his homeland over French drinks such as Brandy.

As with London Dry, there is a rich history surrounding Old Tom gins, along with a few far fetched tales! Old Tom is a sweeter style of gin that rose to popularity in the 18th century when the quality of spirits was poor. Herbs and natural sweeteners such as liquorice root (or according to certain tales, a dead tom cat!) were added to the gin to make it taste better.

In the 17th century, common land in the UK split up into farmland by hedgerows which produced huge crops of sloe berries. Rather than waste them, they steeped them in alcohol! The flavours of the sloe berries helped make the spirit more palatable. By Pre-prohibition times, sloe gin was used in cocktail classics like Charlie Chaplin and the Sloe Gin Fizz.

London Dry

Navy Strength

Modern Classic

Now we know you’re here for a drink and a good time so let’s just cover the basics. London dry doesn’t actually have to be distilled in London. When this style first appeared, it was comparably drier than some of the sweeter, more rustic attemps at gin making. It must be a minimum of 37.5% abv and no colours or flavours can be added after distillation.

The navy was an important buyer for many distilleries and helped to ship the spirit across the oceans. In order to check if their rations had been watered down, the sailors developed a test. If the spirit burned with a clear flame then it was full strength. The strength at which this happens is 57% therefor Navy Strength Gin must be at this abv or above!

The latest gin boom has brought about hundreds of new gins from all over the world. Since the boom began in 2009, distillers have been experimenting with new techniques and becoming more adventurous with flavours. Demand for local craft spirts means that there are currently almost double the amount of distilleries in the UK than 5 years ago!
