A Message from the CEO Dear Troop Leaders and Families: Many Girl Scouts don't start to think about the Gold Award, our highest and most prestigious achievement, until they reach the Senior or Ambassador level. But actually, the time to motivate girls to aspire to the Gold Award starts now. As her leader and mentor, your guidance can inspire a can-do attitude to help her reach the "PhD in Girl Scouting." The Gold Award represents the culmination of a Girl Scout’s experience. Through this journey, girls discover their passion, find their voice and work together as a troop to positively impact their community. As they earn badges, explore the outdoors and grow as leaders, girls gain the confidence to take on a project all on their own. This is the path to the Gold Award. Remind your girl as she progresses that becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout positions her for success. The Gold Award is recognized by universities and can be critical in the college admissions process. Our Council and other organizations offer financial scholarships to girls who have earned the Gold Award. Additionally, the armed services elevates a Gold Award Girl Scout one rank higher than other recruits. But most importantly, Gold Award Girl Scouts have acquired project management and leadership skills that will follow them throughout their lifetime. So instill in her a desire to make the world a better place. Take a look at the tips below to help guide her to become a Gold Award Girl Scout, no matter her level. Five Tips to Get Her to the Gold Award 1

Plant the seed when she is a Daisy and Brownie. Foster in her a love of Girl Scouting and an awareness that she is part of a movement where girls can make the world a better place.

Help your troop earn the awards designed for their level. Juniors earn the Bronze Award while Cadettes earn the Silver Award. In accomplishing their take action projects, girls develop more confidence as they see the impact of their work. They discover the kind of fun that happens when girls work together to make a difference.

Introduce your troop to a Gold Award alumna from your community. Connect with your service unit to find a Gold Award Girl Scout willing to talk to your troop about her experience. Learn more about our Council’s Gold Award Girl Scouts in our award yearbook at www.gscnc.org/goldaward.

Encourage your troop to experience it all, from camping, earning badges and cookie marketing to financial literacy and STEM exploration. These experiences can help girls determine their Gold Award topic and develop the determination to complete their project.

Remember that becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout takes determination. Girls should allow enough time to complete their project (generally two years). Take it one step at a time and let her know that if she runs into roadblocks, there are caring troop leaders and mentors there to guide her. By adding online to your in person sales efforts, you can offer everyone’s favorite cookies to customers down the block or across the country with just a few clicks. • Girl Scouts who offer cookies online in addition to in person order card sales sell an average of 76% more cookies than girls who did not use the online option. • Girl Scouts who personalize their online cookie storefront with a photo or video on average sold more than double the number of cookies than those who did not. Council Events Girl Scout DC Step Showcase

February 24, 2018, 10:30am-3:30pm Join us for the 12th Annual DC Step Showcase at Trinity Washington University in Washington, DC! Step is a form of dance in which the performers – usually as a group – use their entire bodies as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps. Girl Scouts of all levels can form a team and register to participate in the show. For guidelines and to register, visit gscnc.org/councilactivities. Family and friends are invited to come out and cheer for all of our Girl Scout step teams and learn some signature step moves. This community celebration is free to all, so come out and enjoy a festive day of fun and dance. Just before the show, a free activity fair will be set up celebrating Black History Month. Council program partners will also be available with exhibits on the many Girl Scout programs offered in our Council. *Please Note: There is no registration for spectators. Entry will be first come, first served

Congressional Aide

If you are interested in the thrill of Capitol Hill, complete your Congressional Aide application and submit to the D.C. Council office by Thursday, March 1, 2018. Girl Scout Days Girl Scout Day at the Newseum March 3, 2018, 9am-5pm Discounted $11 admission tickets are available when booked through a troop. Girl Scouts under the age of 6 are free. March 10, 2018, 10am-3pm Admission is free. Parking is $15 (All Girl Scouts who register by February 8th will receive a free patch at the Girl Scout table on the day of the event.)

Come and take part in the exciting science activities at Girl Scout Day at the National Air & Space Museum (NASM), Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center! Take the controls of a flight simulator, see the Space Shuttle Discovery, experiment with the forces of gravity and speak with female scientists and engineers all on the same day. Presenters from the museum, the Federal Aviation Administration, NASA, US Fish and Wildlife Service and many more make this a unique opportunity for Girl Scouts of all ages! This is a “family and friends” event, so parents, siblings and future Girl Scouts are encouraged to attend with your troop. Please include these additional people in your registration. Celebrate spring with a fun-filled, festive day at Hillwood! Girls will earn badges while they explore enchanting gardens, discover glittering treasures in the mansion and enjoy a variety of hands-on activities. Play lawn games such as badminton, hula hoop and jump rope, try costumes from a collection of hero's capes and royal crowns and create works of art including self-portraits and fancy placemats inspired by Hillwood's art collection.

Maker Day May 19, 2018 Mark your calendars! Come out and support your fellow Girl Scout Makers at NOVA– Annandale Campus. There will be hands-on activities and demonstrations to inspire girls to be future makers and innovators. Want to exhibit at Maker Day? Are you a maker? Have you made something that you would like to showcase at Maker Day? Have you been working on the new Girl Scout STEM badges? Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital is seeking applications from Girl Scout Makers of all ages who are passionate about hands-on learning to exhibit their projects through a demonstration or presentation. The best participants are mature young girls and their adult mentors who are willing to explain, demonstrate, and share their creations with others. Archives and History Programs

In 1912, Juliette Gordon Low started a movement that would change the lives of millions of girls. To remember the many women and girls who took part in our Girl Scout movement, Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital maintains two Archives & History Centers in Frederick, MD and Winchester, VA where girls can learn about our rich traditions and legacies. Girls will see vintage uniforms, explore old handbooks, hear stories about local Girl Scout heroes and discover the many artifacts that represent our accomplishments. Throughout the Girl Scout year, our programs focus on Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scouts’ birthday in March, World Thinking Day and the World Centers. Programs run monthly, so check out the events calendar at gscnc.org for dates, times, and locations.

Highest Awards Updates

2018 Highest Awards Deadline Save the date! March 15, 2018 at 5:00pm is the deadline to submit Gold Award final reports and Silver Trefoil reports. Girls who meet the deadline will be: • Invited to the In Your Honor ceremony on May 12, 2018 • Recognized in the 2018 Award Yearbook. This deadline also applies to Silver Award final reports in order for girls to be recognized in the 2018 Awards Yearbook. President’s Award and Gold Award Scholarship applications are also due on March 15, 2018.

New Gold Award Resources & Website Updates We’ve updated our website with more resources on the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. Now, you can access a Gold Award FAQ that provides helpful tips on submission deadlines, Gold Award presentations, and GoGold Online. We have also developed a Gold Award Parent Guide that provides details on how parents and guardians can best support their girls throughout the Gold Award process. Find both the FAQ and the Parent Guide on our website, www.gscnc.org/goldaward.

Program Grants Every girl should be able to participate in her Girl Scout troop activities, no matter her financial situation. Last year, more than $45,000 was distributed to girl and adult members with financial needs in the form of loans and grants! Program grant applications can be found at gscnc.org/forms by searching “Program grant application.” Please remember that grant applications should be received six to eight weeks before the activity to ensure there is enough time for review by the Program Grants Panel. Council Resources Program Kits

Did you know Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital offers materials that can be borrowed to support your Girl Scout experience? Program kits are available for leaders to check out and use with their troops. Kits are fun, age-appropriate resources and are available for a variety of subjects such as STEM, Journeys, the environment, teamwork and healthy living. Leaders can use them during troop meetings and as stations at larger events like encampments. Each kit is designed to serve a troop of 16-20 girls but can be modified to accommodate larger groups. New and Updated! Check out our updated History Kits to explore Girl Scout traditions, vintage uniforms and early Girl Scout skills. And, try our newest kits: Daisy and Brownie GoldieBlox. These kits come with all the activities needed to complete the Mechanical Engineering badges!

If you find yourself wondering where to earn the Jeweler Badge or want to know where to take your teen troop whitewater rafting, be sure to keep up with Troop Edition. Troop Edition is a weekly e-newsletter containing upcoming Council and Program Partner activities for troops and individuals. You’ll also find details on upcoming Girl Scout days and volunteer opportunities. Troop Edition is posted each Thursday to our website, and troop leaders and service unit manager receive Troop Edition via email. Rallyhood is an online Girl Scout community that can help you connect with other troop leaders in your area. Who better to teach you all about the Girl Scout program than another volunteer like yourself? Our volunteer adult educators offer everything from required program level and cookout/campout training to fun enrichment courses like knots and ceremonies. Girl Scout Camp Our camps are for girls by girls! A key benefit of being a Girl Scouts is having access to our beautiful camps. In a girl-led, girl-friendly environment, girls challenge themselves and take healthy risks, surrounded by supportive friends, leaders and camp staff. Girl Scouts believes in getting girls outdoors. Our summer camps allow girls to unplug from their smartphones, laptops, TVs and tablets, and get outside to enjoy nature. The Girl Scout Nation’s Capital summer camp information is available online at www.gscnc.org/camp. Programs from two days to two weeks are available for girls currently in grades K to 12. When girls spend quality time outdoors and increase their exposure to nature they thrive physically, emotionally and intellectually. And that's great news because when Girl Scouts get outside, they: · Discover that they can better solve problems and overcome challenges. · Develop leadership skills, build social bonds, and be happier overall. · Become team players and care more about protecting our environment. Explore STEM & Outdoors Troops: Explore the Outdoors, Your Way Whether they’re camping pros or just starting out, girls of all ages can have exciting experiences in the great outdoors. Why venture out? Time spent outside teaches girls how to take healthy risks, problem solve and develop an appreciation for our environment. Check out ideas for helping your Girl Scout progress in the outdoors.

1. Hold a troop meeting outside. Start small by exposing girls to nature during your troop meeting. Girls can have fun planning a picnic, or taking a walk around their neighborhood.

2. Plan a short hike. Our region is surrounded by beautiful parks and hiking trails. Girls can practice leadership as they decide where to go, what to pack and what trails they’d like to take.

3. Earn the Troop Camping badge. The new Girls’ Choice Troop Camping badges allow girls to test their skills with age-appropriate activities. Daisies can try a backyard sleepover, while Ambassadors will test their survival skills as they embark on challenging camping adventures.

4. Register for Girl Scout summer day, evening and sleep-away camp. Whether she wants to camp for a few days or a week, she’ll practice independence while forming new friendships at Girl Scout camp. Talk to your troop about Girl Scout summer camps. The camp brochure will be mailed to all members by the end of December and information will be posted online. Registration begins in January and families should register early to get in the program of their Girl Scout’s choice. (see page 10)

Become a STEM Superstar Are you ready to explore the exciting world of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)? Girl Scouts at every level have fun opportunities to unleash their inner innovator and discover how STEM can help them improve their world.

1. Try the new STEM Journeys and Badges New Journeys will help girls begin to Think Like an Engineer, Think Like a Programmer and Think Like a Citizen Scientist. Through the Robotics and Mechanical Engineering badges, girls learn how robots are designed and complete hands-on engineering activities like building and testing rollercoasters, race cars and gliders. 2. Earn the Staying STEM Patch Through our Council’s Staying STEM fun patch, get ideas for STEM-related activities, field trips and fun experiments like growing your own crystals or making homemade lava lamps. The patch is designed to highlight STEM opportunities around our Council and offer resources to help girls of all ages engage in STEM. Learn more at gscnc.org/kits

3. Be a Girl Scout Maker Have you ever dreamed about building a robot, designing a video game or even developing products to help people recycle? You can become a Girl Scout Maker! This year, girls will showcase their projects at Maker Day on Saturday, May 19 at NOVA – Annandale Campus. Girls can sign up to be exhibitors or attend with their troop and engage in hands-on activities and demonstrations that will inspire future makers and innovators.
