2010 BOARD OF DIRECTORS You’ve heard it before – a volunteer at an organization is asked to make a contribution and the reply is “I give my time. Isn’t that enough?”. But not at Girl Scouts of Rhode Island! Our annual report this year features the kind of wonderful people who care so much about building girls of courage, confidence, and character that they donate their time, talent AND treasure to our organization. And then they ask, “What else can we do?” Our donors serve on the board of directors, chair committees, drive their daughters to Girl Scout meetings and camping trips, work at summer camp, volunteer as troop leaders, and offer to train new leaders. Our donors have garages full of Girl Scout Cookies, cars full of camping equipment, and scrapbooks full of photos from when they were Girl Scouts. Our donors can recite the Girl Scout Promise and love to reminisce about the Girl Scout leader who inspired them when they were young. Our donors give year after year and want to know where their money is most needed, how their money is spent. Then our donors ask their employers to consider financially supporting Girl Scouts because they do. So, thank you. Thank you for all you do to make a difference in the lives of girls. Thank you for always asking “What else can I do?”

2010 DONORS

CONTRIBUTIONS TO GSRI, INC This annual report reflects a twelve-month period from October 1, 2009 through September 30, 2010. A large portion of our philanthropic funding this year came from individual giving to our annual fund. Donors to the annual fund – through our Friends of Girl Scouting campaign, our campership appeal, and our Family Partnership campaign -- are Girl Scout alumnae, parents, staff, volunteers and other individuals who care deeply about the future of girls. We also continue to benefit from the generosity of private foundations like the Ida Ballou Littlefield Memorial Trust and the June Rockwell Levy Foundation and corporate foundations at Amica, Textron and Hasbro that fund our efforts to bring the values and benefits of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to girls in underserved communities. Other foundations like The Champlin Foundations and Fall River Women’s Union fund camperships and major capital improvements at our camps, helping us introduce girls to the beauty and majesty of the natural world.

Grants 40.5%

The following is a list of donors who made a gift of cash or securities, or a gift-in-kind and/or made a pledge between October 1, 2009 and September 30, 2010. For the purposes of this report, matching gifts are credited to both the donor and the matching gift organization. We have made every effort to correctly identify our donors. If omissions or discrepancies are noted, please contact Jill Martens at [email protected] or at (401) 331-4500 x1304 so we can update our records.

2010 YEAR IN HIGHLIGHTS • More than 843,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies were sold during the 2010 Girl Scout Cookie Sale – a slight increase over the previous year in spite of an ailing economy! For the first time ever, girls were allowed to participate in GSUSA approved on-line marketing for Girl Scout product activities. • Twenty-six girls from our council received their Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. The girls were recognized for this wonderful accomplishment at a ceremony on Sunday, June 6 at Save the Bay in Providence. Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts and Congressman Jim Langevin were on hand to congratulate the girls. • Thanks to generous grants from Hasbro Children’s Fund and the US Department of Justice via Girl Scouts of the USA, GSRI’s Girl Scouts Beyond Bars program received the funding it needed to serve incarcerated mothers and their daughters for another year and beyond. The program expanded substantially in 2010 with thirteen women and twenty girls participating. • We “stuck our big toe” in the waters of social media and launched our own Facebook page, which now has nearly 700 friends! • After extensive research and development, Girl Scouts launched a brand campaign designed to reacquaint the country with our iconic organization. The branding is composed of a striking new visual identity, which includes a distinctive trefoil mark, revised color palette, and refreshed logo – all reflected in this year’s annual report! • Sixteen hundred girls had a Girl Scout summer camp experience. And, thanks to the generosity of individuals, civic organizations, corporations and foundations to our campership appeal, more than $39,000 worth of financial aid was distributed, helping 237 girls to enjoy a summer out-of-doors. • Close to 4,000 generous Girl Scout families contributed $64,533 to the council’s Family Partnership campaign. Family Partnership donations help defray the cost of leadership training for volunteers, council-wide events, financial assistance and the production of our council newsletter, S’More News.

• Girls elected to donate $5,867 from their Girl Scout Cookie Sale proceeds to Operation Support Our Troops’ Wheels for Warriors project which gives away specially equipped vans to injured or paralyzed veterans. This was the largest amount ever contributed to a Cookie Sale Service Project recipient! Local customers also purchased and donated 300 cases of Girl Scout Cookies for our soldiers abroad. • Individuals who include Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, Inc. in their estate plan become members of the Juliette Low Society. In November 2009, nineteen members of the Juliette Low Society gathered for a luncheon at Camp Hoffman, where they had an opportunity to reconnect, ask questions about the future of GSRI’s camp properties, and enjoy the fall beauty of Camp Hoffman. Even Juliette Low made an appearance! • Project Undercover, our long-time community service partner, collects new diapers, socks and underwear for children in need. During 2010, girls from our council collected 53,300 items for Project Undercover through troop and service unit events. We joined forces once again with the Pawtucket Red Sox for the popular “Sox for Socks” event and added a similar event in partnership with the Providence Bruins! • The PS3 Ronald A. Gill Jr. Memorial Scholarship Foundation was established by the parents of Ronnie Gill to ensure that their son’s death was not in vain and that his legacy continues. In 2010, Ronnie’s father was inspired to establish a new scholarship when he discovered a wreath made by the girls in Troop 276 at his son’s memorial. In June 2010, five girls from our council received a “Troop 276 Scholarship” to help pay for college. • In March, over 230 girls from the Northeast attended the 23rd Annual Senior Leadership Conference held at Salve Regina University.  The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Maureen Raymo, Research Professor at Boston University.  Girl attended workshops about illegal immigration, engineering, DNA analysis, African drumming and cultural awareness.

2010 DONORS

2010 FEATURED DONORS Rebecca & David Brown

Pictured with their daughter, Girl Scout Cadette Sophie Brown David and Rebecca Brown contribute to the council’s Family Partnership Campaign each year. Says Rebecca, “I’m a professor at URI and don’t have a lot of spare time so this is my way of supporting Girl Scouting. We value what the adult volunteers do for our daughter and want to show our appreciation.”

Keith O. Flanagan & Linda Tainsh Flanagan

Pictured with Girl Scout Cadette Caroline Kelly Keith and Linda have contributed to GSRI’s Campership Fund and, most recently, to provide the equipment necessary for an advanced archery program at Camp Hoffman. Linda wrote, “Keith and I choose to donate to GSRI because Scouting and camp influenced and enriched both our lives. Camp was also a very important part of our children’s lives.”

Georgette Nobrega

Pictured with Girl Scout Gold Award recipient, Carissa Johnson Georgette, a Girl Scout leader and a Girl Scout since she was a child, supports the council each year through the Friends of Girl Scouting annual campaign. “I contribute financially to Girl Scouts because I believe in the values that Girl Scouting promotes and I want to be sure that the organization continues well into the future.”

Nancy Armstrong

Pictured with Girl Scout Brownie Emma Martens Nancy is a lifetime member of Girl Scouts and has held many volunteer positions for the council; currently, she is a member of the Finance Committee. Because she has included Girl Scouts of Rhode Island in her estate plan, she is also a member of the Juliette Low Society. “I am grateful there is a method available to ensure the future of Girl Scouting so generations of girls can discover all the choices and leadership opportunities available to them.”

Nancy Telford

Pictured with Amber Fearn, GSRI’s Outdoor Program Specialist Nancy is a loyal contributor to GSRI’s Campership Fund. “I made a decision awhile ago to give more money to fewer organizations so that I could make a greater impact. Girl Scouts was one of the organizations I selected. Going to Girl Scout camp was a dream of mine when I was a little girl and it feels good to know that several girls can realize that dream each summer because of my financial support.

G I R L SCOUT MISSION Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

G I R L SCOUT PROMISE On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

T H E GIRL SCOUT L AW I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority,
