Ankara Overview

Ankara is the capital of Turkey and the second largest city in terms of both population and economy. It is located in the center of Turkey in the region known as Anatolia. As the capital city, it is home to the Turkish Government, Military Headquarters and all foreign embassies. In addition to its importance in government, it is also a commercial, industrial and educational hub and hence has a highly developed infrastructure. Due to its geographic location it is strategically located at the center of Turkey’s highway and railway networks and serves as the marketing centre for the surrounding agricultural area.

Ankara has nineteen universities which brings a vibrant, young population and the foreign embassies create an international dimension to the city. Ankara has some thirty-five shopping malls with five more scheduled to open by the end of 2013. It also has the high streets of Tunalı Hilmi, Arjantin and Filistin which are home to a host of international and domestic retailers as well as a wide range of restaurants, cafes and entertainment. Each year from June 8 to July 1, Ankara’s Shopping Fest is host to local and foreign visitors alike. For 22 days there are special events throughout the high streets and shopping centers including special promotions, music, dance and family entertainment. The city has become more urbanized in recent years as the working population chooses to live outside the city in the many new developments that include green space, leisure and shopping alternatives in their master plans. It is expanding to the west along the Eskişehir Highway.

Ankara Key Retail Areas & Streets TUNALI HİLMİ STREET The oldest established street for shopping is Tunalı Hilmi. It is a vibrant busy street hosting both international and local retailers as well as many restaurants, cafes and the famous Swan Park. You will find some kind of activity there 24/7.

ARJANTİN STREET Arjantin Street is the new high street of Ankara. It has both international and local luxury retailers as well as many upscale restaurants. The growth is slowly moving up this street as the surrounding area gains a more upper class status.

FİLİSTİN STREET Filistin Street is home to a small group of retailers but tends to gear itself more toward the younger eating and drinking crowd. It is in close proximinty to both Arjantin and Tunalı Hilmi streets.

SHOPPING MALLS Shopping malls are a very important part of the Ankara retail market as the city is growing outwards to handle its increasing population. The rapid expansion of shopping centers has caused some uncertainty in rental prices on the high streets as more and more people move to suburban Ankara. Unlike Istanbul, in Ankara many international brands, including luxury, choose the shopping mall as their main retail selling point. As an example, Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Emporio Armani can be found at the Panora Mall. Harvey Nichols can be found at the Kentpark Shopping Center as well as Calvin Klein, Paris Hilton and Tommy Hilfiger. Next to Kentpark is Cepa where H & M, Calvin Klein Jeans, Lacoste and Levi’s have stores. AnkaMall, one of the oldest shopping and most popular in Ankara, is home to Cacharel, Benetton, Zara, Massimo Dutti and Bershka. Also of note is the Armada Mall, which is undergoing a major expansion due for completion in 2013-2014 and Next level, a new mixed-use development with offices, residential and a shopping center being built at the crossroads of Eskişehir and Konya highways. This is the new city center of the future.

Ankara Food & Beverage Ankara, because of its wide mix of population both in terms of age, socio-economic class and ethnicity, has restaurants that cater for all tastes. The student population prefer the many local and international coffee and fast food outlets as well as the traditional Turkish “buffets.” Starbucks, McDonalds, Pizza Hut and Burger King are just a few of the choices available. Foreign embassy personnel as well as the upwardly mobile government workers enjoy more trendy places such as Tapas, Cafemiz, Kuki House and Mickey’s. Big Chefs, a local partnership, is also very popular. These restaurants have healthy salad alternatives as well as international favorites mixed with local delights. Chinese food is also rising in popularity – Quick China, another locally owned company, is rapidly expanding in Ankara with five restaurants.

For the many power dinners hosted in Ankara, Kosebasi (southern Anatolian cuisine) and Uladağ (now with garden seating for 350) are long time favorites for meat and compete with newcomers Gunaydin and Dukkan. For fish, Trilye is the new choice. Since 1955, Washington, at the top of the castle, is still is a favorite for local and tourists alike. Many restaurants add music on weekend nights to entertain the large, youthful population. The November Pub (Tunalı Hilmi) and the Texas Style Amarillo Grill (Gaziosmanpasa) are two popular spots.
