Thinking Missionally in Our Next Chapter BY PASTOR JEFF BECKETT Some of the most exciting days of Salem’s history are being written right now. We have a newly crafted mission statement, we are reaching the Triangle with the Gospel, and we are growing in amazing ways. This growth has created some “good” problems, and our challenge now is to find an approach that is consistent with our mission: to glorify God, make disciples, and share His story to address those problems. The first problem of note is that our 9:45 AM small group (BFG) ministry is essentially at capacity in terms of room availability. Several current BFG’s are thriving and in need of birthing new groups, but there is little to no room to use for expansion. The second “good” problem is that parking in the few minutes leading up to the 11 AM service is also at near capacity. We often hear stories of people intending to come to Salem, but who end up leaving after finding no convenient parking. The pastoral staff has been busy developing a strategy to address these “good” problems that aligns with our mission. First, of course, we could do nothing. However, when we say we are here to glorify God and make disciples, accepting that we are at capacity and deciding to do nothing seems unworthy of our mission. Second, we could begin to focus more on off-campus approaches. This may be a future strategy worthy of consideration, but the pastoral staff does not believe that we are ready to utilize this approach in a way that could provide near-term assistance. We also still have on-campus opportunities available to utilize.

“Our challenge now is to find an approach that is consistent with our mission.” Finally, Salem has the potential to address these “good” problems in the manner that we addressed them back in 2001 in our smaller worship facility … We can add a third Sunday service and create a new BFG hour to compliment the newly added service. This approach would thoroughly address the issue of needing additional BFG space, and somewhat address the issue of limited parking at 11 AM. It would also do a great job of bringing God glory by opening more opportunities for discipleship and sharing the Gospel with our community. After praying and considering the possibilities, the pastoral staff is now focused on option three; the creation of a new worship and BGF hour to initiate in the Fall of 2018. Be on the lookout for prayer opportunities and more information as we get closer to launching our new worship schedule. The next exciting chapters are ahead of us. May we glorify God, make disciples who pursue Jesus, and share His story! More information will soon be available at www.salem-bc.org/new-service. Watch, read, and pass it along!
