GO HUMAN LOCAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT CALL FOR PROJECTS OVERVIEW Are you interested in making your community safer for people who walk or bike? To increase the reach of the Go Human campaign, the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is offering Local Community Engagement funding to local non-profit organizations, artists, students and innovators to implement projects that improve safety for people walking and biking throughout the SCAG region. Eligible counties: Imperial - Los Angeles - Orange - Riverside - San Bernardino - Ventura

BACKGROUND Southern California has some of the highest levels of pedestrian and bicyclist injuries and fatalities in the country. In the SCAG region, 1,580 people died and more than 149,000 people were injured in collisions in 2016. To address this challenge, SCAG, in collaboration with its county partners and the California Office of Traffic Safety, has implemented the Go Human campaign. Go Human is a regional outreach and advertising campaign with the goals of reducing traffic collisions and encouraging people to walk and bike more in the SCAG region.

GOALS & PROJECT EXAMPLES Through this Call for Projects, SCAG aims to fund 15-20 local community engagement projects. The primary goals are to increase the number of people who see or hear Go Human’s safety messaging, while simultaneously aiming to decrease the number of collisions involving people walking and biking. The local community engagement projects are intended to complement and reinforce the regional ad campaign and must be implemented between May and September 2018. While the primary focus should be on safe driving around pedestrians and bicyclists, proposed projects should also encourage more people to walk and bike. The list below represents a few possible ideas, but please get creative! Examples of eligible projects include, but are not limited to: •

Artistic enhancements to crosswalks, roundabouts, or other safety related infrastructure

Murals or other art projects that promote safety or active transportation

Bike Month events with a focus on safety

Group bike rides or walking tours

Temporary parklets or place-making features with active transportation or traffic safety components and engaging activities

Social media or grass roots marketing tactics

Gamification and Mobile Applications

Creative or artistic elements heavily concentrated at a prominent intersection

Parent-focused back to school safety strategies

Other unique, engaging and visible programming primarily targeting drivers
