Welcome Well, I suspect nobody ever thought we would be up in arms about the gentrification of Wentworth! It’s hardly a place that could be gentrified any further really, but somehow the new owners have managed it. Already one of the most exclusive clubs in the UK, the owners have decided in their wisdom to make it even more elite, alienating the current membership and demanding they prove their wealth with a doubling of fees and a rather bazar extra fee of £100,000. Oh, and only 800 people will get to be members, a big cut from the current membership of 4000!

But the members have plans to fight back. One of the local residents has said he will hold a massive party in his residence, which happens to have a balcony over-looking the 18th hole, every day of the BMW PGA Championship! The choice of music will be Cuban, apparently, and will be so loud no golfer will be able to focus on their putts. The decision for the new owners to price thousands of members out of the club house comes at a time when most courses are doing the opposite. There might be money in the ultra-rich, but it isn’t just about the green stuff in your pocket. Courses which continue to alienate members fly in the face of exactly what the golfing community is trying to do, which is open the game to all. Let’s hope that every member of Wentworth does their best to oppose the fees… and joins the party on the 18th!

Nick Pink appointed new Chief Executive of England Golf Nick has previously worked for other organisations including UK Sport, where he led the international work and was head of the senior management team. He built key relationships with national and international organisations and developed a fundraising strategy for international development which raised almost £2m within 12 months. He has also worked with the Youth Sport Trust and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Nick Pink, who has held senior roles with leading sports organisations, has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of England Golf and will take up his post on Monday 14th March 2016. For the past four years he has been the European Manager for the International Cricket Council (ICC), charged with implementing a global strategy to increase participation and financial growth across 33 national federations. The European region – which is the largest in the ICC - is on track to meet its ambitious targets. In the past four years Nick has led a 35% increase in cricket participation across Europe; worked with member nations to improve governance and administration; and supported members to develop corporate and public fundraising and commercial strategies to ensure continued growth.

8

Commenting on his appointment Nick said: “I am delighted to be joining England Golf and look forward to working alongside internal colleagues, County Unions and Associations, clubs and all other stakeholders to deliver the ‘Raising our Game’ strategy. Golf has played an important role in my own life and I passionately believe the sport can provide people of all ages the opportunity to play and be involved in our great game.” Graham Yates, Chairman of the England Golf Board, said: “We are delighted to welcome Nick to England Golf. His experience, leadership qualities and networking skills will drive our strategy forward and support our aims to create more members, more players and stronger clubs. We are very much looking forward to working with Nick to further develop the game of golf.”

England Golf has welcomed the creation of an All-Party Parliamentary Group to support the game of golf. All-Party Groups comprise Members of both Houses of Parliament and all political parties who support specific interests. The Golf Group’s first meeting was held on Tuesday 19 January 2016 in the Houses of Parliament.

Rod Findlay, England Golf’s Director of Strategy and Governance, said: “England Golf welcomes the establishment of the All-Party Golf Group. Golf is the fifth largest sport in the country by participation and makes a huge sporting, social and economic contribution. We look forward to working with the Officers and Members of the Group to give golf a greater presence in Parliament and with Government”. As well as Lords and MPs, the Group welcomes non-Parliamentarians as Associate Members, and invites organisations, clubs, and individuals to join the Group and attend meetings and provide their thoughts on various issues and any regulation that impacts on the sport. To coincide with the launch of the Group, the website www.parliamentary.golf has been created and anyone interested in becoming an Associate Member can join by visiting the relevant page or can sign up to the Group’s news announcements. The Group has also created the twitter account @ParliamentGolf. The Group’s Chairman is Lincoln’s MP Karl McCartney who said: “I am delighted to be a part of this new Group. Golf is a sport enjoyed by everyone, and many of them are my constituents, but there is more that can be done to ensure the opportunities to play are there and barriers to being involved are removed. I am very much looking forward to welcoming Members of all parties into the Group and holding our first meeting in the New Year.” Stephen Gethins, MP for North East Fife – home of The R&A – is Vice-Chairman. He welcomed the creation of the Group as a vehicle for economic development as well as sport participation. He said “Golf is incredibly important to the economy in North East Fife and elsewhere. It is also a fantastic way for people to be active, keep fit and play competitive and recreational sport. We have a great professional game in the United Kingdom, and it is important that we recognise the local benefits major tournaments can bring and ensure that those benefits are passed on to all in the game.”

England Golf’s leading amateur stars will have high hopes of hitting the ground running in their quest for major honours in 2016 after taking part in the first training camps of the winter at Quinta do Lago in Portugal. Members of the England Men’s and Men’s ‘A’ squads who gathered at the prestigious Algarve resort included Bradley Moore and Alfie Plant – both ranked in Europe’s top ten. The visits provided the opportunity to fine-tune their swings and enjoy the award-winning venue’s array of five-star facilities as part of Quinta do Lago’s role as the winter training base for England Golf’s national squads. In addition to working on technique, activities for the players during the week-long camps included sessions on fitness, the short game, ball-flight control, game management and the mental side of the game. Paul Ashwell, coach of the England Men’s A Squad, said: “The players really enjoyed the beautiful weather and excellent practice facilities and were especially impressed with the North Course following its recent remodelling. We are all looking forward to returning for our next visit in March!” Featuring three 18-hole championship courses, outstanding practice facilities at its Paul McGinley Academy, a TaylorMade Performance Centre and extensive leisure activities and facilities, Quinta do Lago has everything needed to guarantee a first-class golf experience. Quinta do Lago has been the official winter venue for hosting England Golf’s squad since 2014. Both men’s squads are set to return to the resort for a second winter training break in March, while the women’s, boys’ and girls’ squads will also enjoy the facilities on

camps in the run-up to the start of the 2016 season. As part of the partnership with Quinta do Lago, England Golf squads stay at the resort and use its driving range and practice facilities as well as having access to both the South and North courses. In addition, each group uses the swing analysis with a launch monitor and has biomechanics golf fitness training sessions.

England stars target success after Quinta do Lago camps

The England Golf National Performance Programme supports more than 40 of the best amateur players within the England national squads and almost 200 players within regional squads. Previous players include some of the world’s leading golfers, such as Justin Rose, Lee Westwood, Charley Hull and Melissa Reid. The resort has invested €50 million upgrading its sports, leisure and lifestyle facilities as part of a six-year investment program, including the €9.6 million redesign of its North Course by renowned American architect Beau Welling in close association with European Ryder Cup winning captain Paul McGinley, and was named ‘Europe’s Best Golf Venue’ at the 2015 World Golf Awards. Set amongst 2,000 acres of the picturesque Ria Formosa Natural Park, Quinta do Lago has been at the forefront of European golf for more than four decades with three 18-hole championship courses matched by outstanding practice facilities including the world’s only Paul McGinley Golf Academy, a state-of-the-art TaylorMade Performance Centre and new short game area. Away from the fairways, there is plenty to keep everyone occupied, with events, tennis, cycling and watersports just some of the extensive leisure activities available.

National Golf Club Challenge announces new beneficiary After a successful association with Help for Heroes, The National Golf Club Challenge team – organisers of the UK’s largest amateur charity inter-club golf event – have announced a change of beneficiary for their various fundraising initiatives. From 2016 On Course Foundation will be the new National Golf Club Challenge partner and sole beneficiary for a period of 5 years.

Stacey went on to say “We are now excited to move on to what we see as a natural progression for The National Golf Club Challenge. Through the wonderful initiatives put in place by On Course Foundation NGCC will continue to support our injured Soldiers, helping to enrich and rebuild their lives through the game of golf we all love.”

On Course Foundation supports the recovery of wounded, injured and sick Service personnel and veterans through golf. The charity’s mission is to build confidence and self-belief in its Members through golf skills and employment events, and set them on the path to meaningful employment opportunities in the golf industry. As a sport, golf offers a unique platform where players of all skills and backgrounds can compete healthily, improving not only their physical but mental strength too. With many lacking self-belief, it’s the Foundation’s aim to help Members realise their potential and set them on a fulfilling career path.

The new partnership with On Course Foundation will mean participating golf clubs will get to see how their fundraising will directly benefit the lives of individual veterans, many of whom will be local to their club.

“The National Golf Club Challenge has enjoyed a long and rewarding relationship with Help for Heroes,” Stacey Jeffries, NGCC Event Director commented, “I am extremely proud of what NGCC has achieved over the last 6 years, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds to support – through the work of Help for Heroes – our brave men and women injured while serving our country. It is a testament to the benevolence of the worldwide golfing community who have united with us during this period.”

14

NGCC Patron, Lee Westwood OBE commented, “The National Golf Club Challenge has done a fabulous job since 2010 and I’m excited to continue as Patron to the event moving forward, supporting On Course Foundation. I am really pleased to see how the game we all love to play can make a significant contribution to the lives of our Heroes as they work to rebuild their lives after suffering life changing injuries protecting our freedoms.” Sam Torrance, OBE also commented, “As a proud Patron of The National Golf Club Challenge, I think the new partnership with On Course Foundation is a perfect fit. It means we can continue the good work of supporting the brave lads and lasses from our Armed Forces who have suffered both physical and mental scars, by providing opportunities within golf. Superb!” “With many of our Members lacking confidence, it’s been our aim

national news

to help each person realise their potential both on the golf course and within the golf industry, with the aim of setting them on a fulfilling career path” Managing Director of On Course Foundation Steve Holt remarks. “NGCC are a great partner for us and we are delighted to be involved with Stacey and his team. We very much look forward to a long, fruitful relationship, spreading awareness of our cause, and ultimately helping even more deserving beneficiaries.” Golf clubs all over the UK are invited to take part in the 2016 National Golf Club Challenge, by holding a qualifier at their own club – at the same time as fundraising for On Course Foundation. The aim of the event is to bring hundreds of golf clubs, and tens of thousands of golfers together to compete against each other, at the same time as demonstrating their support for our injured troops. Challenge Patron Marc Warren extended the following invitation, “I challenge golf club Captains, Secretaries, Pros, General Managers and golfers of all levels to get involved and make a difference. Remember, the funds raised will mean more brave individuals can learn new skills, build greater self-confidence and acquire valuable work experience as part of the Great British golfing community.” Star of the Ladies European Tour, NGCC Patron Melissa Reid said, “I’m thrilled to continue to be a part of such a worthy cause. Using golf to provide opportunities for real British Heroes as they rebuild their lives is a win, win for everyone.” There is no registration fee for golf clubs to take part in The National Golf Club Challenge. The only requirement is to raise as much money as possible through fundraising for On Course Foundation in, or around your NGCC event any time in May, June or July in 2016. Golf clubs can register online to take part in the 2016 National Golf Club Challenge by going to www.ngcc.uk or calling 01780 765599.

England golfers flying high on worldwide tours England golfers, led by world number four Bronte Law, have been flying high with impressive results across the world. Law was joint runner-up in the South American women’s amateur championship in Peru, losing out to a last-hole birdie by one of her playing partners. Meanwhile, Bradley Moore claimed third place in the Lake Macquarie Amateur in Australia. Their successes followed immediately after the triumph of the team from the England men’s A squad, winning the Costa Ballena Quadrangular Tournament in Spain with emphatic wins over Finland, Germany and Spain. In addition, England’s squad of four have arrived in South Africa to begin their campaign of six tournaments. They are Jamie Bower (Meltham), Paul Kinnear (Formby), Alfie Plant (Sundridge Park) and Sean Towndrow (Southport & Ainsdale). Bronte Law (Bramhall) was one of four England Golf players taking part in the South American Amateur in Lima. She completed the championship in six-under par and, as she played the last hole was involved in a four-way tie for top spot. The deadlock was broken by Sofia Garcia of Paraguay, who birdied the 18th to successfully defend her title. Meghan MacLaren (Wellingborough, Pictured) shared eighth place in the women’s championship, on one-over par. In the men’s championship, Marco Penge (Golf at Goodwood) impressively finished sixth on threeunder par – having opened with a five-over 77 in the first round. He played his way back into the championship with 68 in the second round, which included a back nine of sixunder 30, thanks to four birdies and an eagle two on a par four. He signed off with a birdie on the 72nd hole to take sixth place on his own. James Allan (Chelmsford) was also aiming for a top ten finish before a disappointing run over the final seven holes, ending with a triple bogey on the 18th, dropped him back to 20th. In Australia, Bradley Moore (Kedleston Park) was in contention throughout the Lake Macquarie Amateur. He opened with a pair of 68s before adding 73 70 for a nine-under total, finishing three shots behind the winner, Harrison Endycott of Australia. Ashton Turner (Kenwick Park) shared 12th place on five under after rounds of 72 70 72 69.

This Girl Can birthday highlights golf campaign Happy first birthday to This Girl Can - the inspiration behind the #ThisGirlGolfs campaign to get more women and girls playing the game! This Girl Can was launched a year ago by Sport England to encourage more women and girls to get active. Figures released to mark the anniversary show that 2.8 million women who recognise the campaign say they’ve done some or more activity as a result. What’s more, 1.6 million of them say they’ve actually started exercising. Golf has its own positive story. This Girl Can inspired the video campaign #ThisGirlGolfs, which was launched last July to shift the perception that golf is a game for men and show that it’s an accessible game for all. The video, produced by Sports Publications with the backing of England Golf, the PGA and Scottish Golf, has already received over 3,000 views on its microsite, has featured on over 370 websites and the hashtag has been used over 8,000 times. It’s set to get even more exposure as the new season gets underway and #ThisGirlGolfs supports a host of England Golf activities with clubs and counties to attract women and girls. Lauren Spray, the England Golf Women & Girls’ Participation Manager, said: “Golf is a great game for women – it’s fun, friendly and good exercise. We’re supporting Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign and applying it to golf with #ThisGirlGolfs and

18

there’s going to be lots of activity over coming months.” England Golf is already working intensively with clubs to attract more women and girls to the game. A pilot project with 100 clubs started last July, helps clubs to make connections with local women’s groups and focusses on providing playing and membership opportunities in an environment which women find comfortable and enjoyable. In just five months, over 1200 women took structured coaching courses, almost 600 began playing regularly and over 360 became members. The pilot is part of Get into golf, the England Golf campaign to inspire adults to take up golf and play more often. Female interest in the game is highlighted by the fact that over 41% of people taking up Get into golf coaching opportunities are women. Other initiatives include working with the Golf Foundation on Girls Golf Rocks which features girl county squad players acting as ambassadors to inspire other girls to start playing. It was successfully trialled in Essex last year when 90 girls attended taster sessions, 40 took structured coaching and six became members. More counties will be running projects in 2016. England Golf has also produced factsheets for clubs packed with information on recruiting and retaining women members, with a girls’ version due out shortly.

The Rest of the World emerged triumphant in the annual Tri-Nations Competition at Caversham Heath A total of 54 players took part in the skins challenge, playing for the Rest of the World, England and Celts, with the scores being so close the competition had to wait for the last group to finish before the winner was confirmed. The Rest of the World took the trophy with 115 skins. England finished second with 104 skins and the Celts were third with 90 skins. Fung Yee Sarah Lau (21hcp) retained sufficient feel in her hands in the cold conditions to win the Ladies Stableford with 32 points – a creditable 17 points scored on the back nine. Kjersti Cannon (23hcp) began with 16 points on the front nine, but the last four holes in the biting wind proved too much, and she had to settle for second place with 26 points. Third was Jane Weller (24hcp), on countback from Fiona Ives (32hcp), both with 25 points. The team of Mervyn Jones (14hcp), Javier Dieguez (19hcp), David Holloway (13hcp) and Stuart Webb (10hcp) won the Four-Man Team Multiplier competition with 110 points. Runners-up were Carl Bache (9hcp), Jim McGiveron (21hcp), Colin Leighton (17hcp) and Andy Holmes (16hcp) with 108 points. Michael Beaumont (5hcp), David Wise (8hcp) Gareth Goodall (5hcp) and Richard Craven (1hcp) were third with 98 points. Twos were recorded by John Downey, David Holloway and Duncan Mee, all on the 13th hole.

Former racing star ‘drives in’ John Gowing, who used to race bikes and cars and motorbikes for a living, has enjoyed another sort of drive when he became the next captain of Frilford Heath Golf Club. John is now better known as an independent jeweller and has a shop in the Covered Market selling high-end watches and jewellery. However, the nerves of the event got to him first time and his club dug into the ground, sending the ball only a matter of meters. He was given a second chance and this time produced a fantastic drive to officially take the role as captain. John raced motorbikes in road races and at one point ran a team in the Isle of Man TT. Cars took over as his ‘driving passion’ in his 30s and he even took part in the British Saloon Car Championship. His career highlight was winning the Will Hire 14-hour race at Snetterton. An 18 handicap, he has been a player at the club for 13years and his chosen charity this year will be Heart Research UK. The new ladies captain is Julie Purcell-Smith. She has chosen Flexicare as her charity, who are a local organisation providing baby care. Julie has also been a member at the club for 13 years and is currently a 17 handicap. Her daughter Sophie is also a member.

Frilford Heath is Oxfordshire’ club, and one of the best in the south of England. Rarely can a club o er 54 holes of top quality golf and almost a hundred years of golf design heritage. The original 18 holes were laid out in 1908 b ve times Open champion JH Taylor, who along with James Braid and Harry Vardon dominated golf around the turn of the twentieth century, part of the ‘Great Triumvirate’. Frilford Heath is Oxfordshire’s finest golf club, and one of the best in the south of England. Rarely can a club offer 54 holes of top quality golf and almost a hundred years of golf design heritage. The original 18 holes were laid out in 1908 by five times Open champion JH Taylor, who along with James Braid and Harry Vardon dominated golf around the turn of the twentieth century, part of the ‘Great Triumvirate’. The Green course holes 5 to 13 retain their original layout today, a testament to their designer! Frilford Heath along with Woburn and Wentworth is unique in style, it is one of very few clubs with three championship standard golf courses, each offering a range of delights, allowing players to choose a classic or a modern challenge to suit all standards of golfers! Situated on 600 acres of glorious undulating heathland just south of Oxford city, Frilford Heath is built on sandy subsoil and combined with the latest equipment and modern maintenance schedules enables the Club to present its courses to the finest playing standards all year round. The Red was described by Bernard Darwin as ‘both good and diffcult’, and it still lives up to this description. An authentic championship challenge at just over 7000 yards from the Black Tees, it offers a traditional heathland golfing experience with pushed-up greens that run fast and true and fairways that demand accurate driving if golfers are to score well. The course was designed by five-time Open champion JH Taylor, whose other courses include Royal Birkdale and Royal Mid-Surrey; in 2013 it hosted the English Amateur, and has hosted the European Tour 1st Stage Qualifying

Home to the English Amateur 2013 since 2011 and welcomes Regional Open Qualifying in 2016. The stretch between holes five and nine is especially strong, with four hefty two shot holes and a par three that many will vote the most memorable on the course. The tee shot must carry a pond, and the elevated green is further protected by out of bounds to the rear. Seven consecutive par fours to close the round are a testing finishing stretch matched by very few courses. The Green course at Frilford Heath may be the shortest, at just over 6,000 yards, but playing to a stiff par of 69, it is no pushover. As at the legendary Rye links in Kent, the Greens only par five is the opening hole - from then on, birdie opportunities can be few and far between. Likened to classics such as the Sunningdale Old and Swinley Forest, the Green course is more than a noisy neighbour, its original features including small undulating greens and sharp faced bunkers await the errant shot. The newest addition the Blue course, was designed by golf course architect Simon Gidman and opened in 1994, this Par 72 offers a more modern “links” feel with a notably stern test on the early hole, where you will not need reminding about the card threatening water. From the Black Tees at over 6700 yards the course meanders through a number of par four dog legs and four par fives that face in all compass directions, seemingly getting the best of the prevailing westerly. The subtle greens are more undulating than on the two older courses, and offer a number of interesting and challenging flag positions as tested by the Brabazon Southern region qualifier in 2010. For five days every spring the Blue is coupled with the Red Course as the home of the Europro Tour Qualifying School. The question everybody asks is which course is the best at Frilford Heath Why not join the debate!

Calcot Park introduces new membership categories

Following on from the successful 85th Anniversary membership promotion, Calcot Park Golf Club is to extend the promotion for this year. The introduction of special membership categories is aimed at the casual golfer who, perhaps from personal circumstances, may not be able to take advantage of full membership at Calcot Park but, at the same time, will give them the opportunity to enjoy this renowned Harry Colt designed course set in the heart of the Thames Valley. Membership of Calcot Park provides an ideal opportunity for anyone wishing to improve their game further. Calcot’s Head PGA Professional, Gareth Johnston, is a recognised coach in his own right but is also an Elite Teaching Professional with Today’s Golfer Magazine. He is supported by three PGA Assistant Professionals creating a team whose primary objective is to provide the highest levels of customer service and teaching for golfers no matter what their ability. The most popular category being extended is the Silver Associate Package. This package has been designed for people who want to play limited levels of golf without incurring the costs associated with full Golf Club membership. There is no bar levy or entrance

26

fee required to purchase this package; the price includes 12 rounds of golf with the option to buy a maximum of eight additional rounds at the members’ guest rate of £25. Silver Associate status is just £350 per annum, allowing access to the course throughout the week and at weekends but not on days when competitions are being held. The Gold Associate Package is designed in exactly the same way as for the Silver Associate but offers unlimited, rather than restricted levels of golf, throughout the year. Again, no bar levy, or entrance fees are incurred. The Gold Associate is available at £1500 per annum and allows access to the course throughout the week and at weekends but not on days when competitions are being held. Student Associate Package. This package is ideal for students in full-time education, enabling young people to continue to play golf, particularly during holiday periods. At £350 per annum the Student Associate package will provide unlimited golf during the year but not on days when competitions are scheduled. The Grove, London’s five-star golf resort, has commenced a series of enhancements to its award-winning Kyle Phillips-designed golf course, in preparation for hosting The European Tour’s British Masters supported by Sky Sports, later this year. Already acknowledged in a number of influential Top 100 rankings lists, The Grove is renovating all 90 bunkers on its 7,152 yard golf course, and also enhancing drainage on 13 holes. The work will see the installation of a specialist Blinder liner system into 18 sand traps to improve drainage and safeguard original design features, whilst a program of sand exchange will be undertaken across all 90 bunkers. A number of bunkers will also be built back up to their original levels, decreasing the height of some faces. Anna Darnell, Director of Golf at The Grove, said: “These important course improvements highlight our ongoing commitment to significantly invest in our product and will maintain the golf course in prime condition for the 2016 season and beyond, and ensure an exceptional stage is set when we welcome The European Tour’s finest golfers for The British Masters in October. We are expecting the work to take up to eight weeks, but it is important to note that visitor-play will be unaffected, with only two temporary greens in use at any one time during the process.”

Middlesex, HertFORDSHIRE & GREATER London

Important golf course enhancements herald the beginning of a stellar year for The Grove

The British Masters supported by Sky Sports, which this year will be hosted by Luke Donald, will mark 10 years since The Grove last hosted a major golf tournament. In 2006, it staged the American Express World Golf Championship, won by Tiger Woods, which remains the only WGC event ever played on UK soil.

Tudor Park Marriott takes on youngest Director of Golf After recently completing his first year at Tudor Park Marriott Hotel & Country Club, James Ibbetson is relishing the prospect of another busy 12 months as Director of Golf for the 18-hole championship course in the heart of the Kent countryside. At just 26, James is the youngest Director of Golf at any of Marriott’s 11 Hotel & Country Clubs in the UK, but the proud north-easterner is loving the challenge of providing top class playing conditions and facilities for the 440 members and thousands of visitors who play at the Donald-Steel designed lay-out, near Maidstone, every year. He said: “The course is playing really well at the moment despite all the rain we’ve had this winter and it does stand up well to a lot of use. At just over 6,000 yards from the white tees it’s quite a short course by modern standards but don’t be fooled by that, it’s tight and undulating with small greens and a lot of run-off areas, and you need to plot your way around.” And, as a scratch handicap player himself, James knows what he is talking about. Before taking up his post at Tudor Park James worked for five-and-a-half years at the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club where he performed a range of duties including acting as one of the teaching professionals. But, having previously taken a golf management degree course at the University of Birmingham, his passion for that area of the golf industry meant that James’s focus gradually moved from playing and teaching to the administrative side.

36

And he certainly has plenty of special events with which to keep himself busy at Tudor Park over the coming months, starting with two pre-qualifying events for Sky Sportstelevised Trilby Tour on April 2nd and May 7th, followed by the Kent Final on May 19. And, two days before that Kent Final, Tudor Park will again be hosting the ever-popular Mancini Trophy where teams of three amateur golfers have the opportunity to play alongside a former professional footballer. Among the ex-pros who took part in last year’s event was England and West Ham legend Sir Trevor Brooking, with James saying: “It was fantastic for all the amateurs to have someone of the stature of Sir Trevor Brooking taking part in the event, and to add a bit of drama they don’t know which footballer they will be playing with until we do the draw on the day.” Looking further ahead, the Disabled Golf Association will be holding one of their events at Tudor Park in August, followed by regional finals for both the Daily Express Junior European Open in September and the “League to Dubai” amateur tournament in October. For more information about all of the above-mentioned competitions, or for club membership details, contact the Tudor Park pro shop on 01622 632040 or email James at [email protected]

Members hit back at Wentworth fee plans Surrey sisters make a mark in the USA Two sisters from Roehampton are separately making their mark on the golf world. Sammy and little sister Annabel Fuller have both recently had success in various competitions in the USA. Sammy, who is 16, has just scored a record seventh win in the Florida International Championship while 13 year-old Annabel has had a string of wins, also in the USA. Sammy (pictured) has worked through the age groups since she was nine years old and was champion in the Florida Junior International Championship in 2009, 10, 11, 12, and 13. In this year’s championship at the PGA Golf Club in Port St Lucie, Florida, the weather conditions were tough with temperatures reaching an unseasonal 30degrees and winds gusting up to 15- 20 mph Fuller responded with scores of 7471-74 on the Ryder Course to win the 15-17 girls’ title by one shot. Her long game was in great form and she hit 49 of the 54 greens in regulation, but found the greens tricky. Meanwhile sister Annabel is a member of England Golf’s U16 regional South Squad and has recently won the Junior Honda Classic. She had a 36-hole score of two-under par on the Fazio course at the PGA National in Florida and, says dad, Ashley: “She played some great golf.” Annabel was one over par in the first round and then stormed her way to the turn in four-under in the second round. She had a couple of bogeys on the way in but birdied the 15th. Earlier she won her age group title in the US Kids Holiday Classic by two shots, on the same course. Before that, she tied for the win in the Doral-Publix Junior Classic, but lost a title play-off with Mexico’s Cory Lopez. The two girls were eight shots clear of the third-placed player.

42

Philip Hammond MP, whose constituency includes Wentworth Golf Club, has stepped into the row over a massive hike in fees at the club. A Chinese company, Reignwood, bought the club in 2014 for £135m and initially promised to keep the course’s ‘unique culture’. However, the new owners announced that they planned to double the fees from £8,000 a year to £16,000 as well as expecting members to make a £100,000 oneoff payment to keep their place in the club. Hammond, who is also the Foreign Secretary, expressed his concern at the increase in fees. Members have also put together a 15-page letter to the new owners which threatens them with legal action if they insist on changing the fees and informs the owners that the planned changes would be in breach of a legal trust agreement that has been in place for 50 years. Famous club members Sir Bruce Forsyth and Michael Parkinson have also voiced their strong opposition to the proposals and many have called it a ‘cull’ of ordinary members in order to create an ‘ultra-rich’ membership. Peter Alliss, the BBC golf commentator who is an honorary Wentworth member, described the debenture plan as “an extraordinary step” commenting that “there are very few people who have £100,000 to piddle away on their pleasures”.

GOLFING GREAT

Byron Nelson was born near Waxahachie in Texas and was raised in a strict Presbyterian Church. When he was 11 the family moved to Fort Worth and within a short time of moving he contracted Typhoid. He barely survived and lost almost half of his bodyweight. However, he recovered swiftly and at the age of 12, he started caddying at his local course. At that time, caddies were banned from playing on the course. However, he was keen to learn and like many other of his contemporaries, he would often sneak onto the course at night, using a white hanky to mark where the hole was. The course later changed their policy and even held a competition especially for caddies. Now aged 14, Nelson narrowly beat a fellow caddie called Ben Hogan. After their epic nine-hole play-off, the two became friends and remained close into their later lives as playing professionals. Nelson turned professional in 1932 and worked as a club professional in Texas. Even though money was tight, he still had dreams of becoming a playing professional and a series of wins in 1935 gave his chances a boost. He was also one of the first to notice the impact steel shafts would have on the game. A new technology, he re-designed his swing from a half to a full one. The impact of his new style on the game would later earn him the name of ‘the father of the modern golf swing’.

His first major title came when he won the Masters in 1937. His score on the first round, 65, remained the lowest score shot in the tournament for many years. Nelson won four more majors, the U.S. Open in 1939, the PGA Championship in 1940 and 1945, and a second Masters in 1942. Nelson also won the Vardon Trophy in 1939 and played in two Ryder Cup teams (1937 and 1947) and he was also a non-playing captain in 1965.

Golfing Great – Byron Nelson

1945 was a record-breaking year for Nelson. He won 18 of the 35 PGA tournaments, which included an amazing 11 in a row. Both records still remain unbeaten. All this in a year the tour was weakened because of the war. His record of 113 consecutive cuts has also to date only been beaten by Tiger Woods (142). However, Nelson had ambitions beyond golf. Now married, he decided to retire at the age of 34 to become a rancher. He also became a commentator and leant his name to the HP Byron Nelson Championship, the first ever PGA tour event named after a player. Nelson died in 2006 and in honor of his achievements, State Highway 114 through Texas was renamed Byron Nelson Boulevard. In 2006 he was also approved to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award of the United States Government.

Kintyre course open for play while Ailsa work gets underway Work on the Ailsa course at Trump Turnberry is now underway and is expected to re-open in 2016. Named after the third Marquess of Ailsa, who owned the land on which it was built, this par-70, 7,211-yard championship course is one of golf’s storied places. Home to four Open Championships, Ailsa has shaped some of the most remarkable moments in the tournament’s history. Less than a year after securing ownership of the course, The Trump Organisation called in famed architects Mackenzie and Ebert to completed a modern-day review of the course, keeping in mind its complex history. The proposals for the great Ailsa course, which first opened in 1901 and has hosted the Open Championship on four occasions, will include the creation of five dramatic and stunning new holes and a range of alterations covering virtually every corner of the course which sits on over 1,000 acres. Among the new changes announced include the lengthening of the Open layout by 150 yards giving it a total yardage of just over 7,350 yards which will be a real test bearing in mind that there will now be 5 par 3s in the layout. It will retain its par 70 status for The Open but will increase to 71 for general play with the 5th hole becoming a par 5. While the Ailsa course undergoes an exciting transformation, you can still experience links golf at its finest at Trump Turnberry with Golf in the Gulfstream. Play the challenging Championship Kintyre course for just £65 per person and enjoy 18 holes of golf on the rugged west coast. Also included is a bacon roll and coffee on arrival in The Duel in the Sun then, following your round, you’ll also enjoy a hearty lunch of soup and sandwiches. To reserve, please call 01655 334 042 Subject to availability. Selected teetimes only. £10 supplement for Saturday/Sunday play applies. Available until 30th April 2016.

The Algarve, Europe’s leading golf destination, has smashed its all-time high for golf visitor numbers and has topped a new chart as the cheapest holiday location for UK tourists. The sun-drenched southern Portuguese coastline boasts 42 superb courses which together clocked up almost 1.2m rounds in 2015 - a significant rise of seven per cent on the previous best year (2007) and almost eight per cent higher than 2014. In real terms, that is more than 100,000 extra rounds - or 274 more per day - as golfers flocked to a destination which also came out on top in the recent Post Office Holiday Money Report - a barometer of value for money in worldwide holiday destinations. Prices for meals - one of the biggest costs for tourists - do not come any cheaper than along the Algarve coastline, which can make a huge difference to travellers as they plan their budgets. In the report, eight holiday essentials including food, drink and sun cream, were purchased at 44 destinations and The Algarve came out on top of the pile as the best value overall.

on 2007 levels - as golfers took advantage of the warm and sunny climate. October was the busiest month as almost 152,000 rounds were played but The Algarve remains a popular choice for UK golfers throughout the year with short and inexpensive flight connections and great value for money, particularly with the strong Sterling against the Euro.

The picturesque region will also be celebrating its 50th anniversary as a golf destination in 2016 as it continues to lead the way in attracting golfers who want to play on the top-quality courses with friendly, golf-savvy service. Maria Manuel Delgado e Silva, ATA golf product manager, said: “We are proud and delighted that so many people enjoyed the Algarve experience in 2015 and we are hoping many more will choose to visit us again in 2016. “We strive to provide the very best in hospitality, accommodation and golf venues with great value and quality. Our guests can also benefit from our 50 years of experience.”

It ties in with the impressive golf visitor numbers from 2015 and an exceptional final quarter - which saw growth jump 15 per cent

Vale Spa crowned Wales’ leading spa at World Travel Awards The Vale Spa, at the Vale Resort in Hensol, has been named the leading spa in Wales by an international awards body that recognises excellence in the tourism industry. The team at the Vale Spa fought off competition from spa resorts across the country to be named Wales’ Leading Spa Resort 2015 at the 22nd World Travel Awards (WTA). The Vale Resort was one of five businesses shortlisted for the Wales’ Leading Spa Resort award, and its win saw it triumph over two fivestar resorts following the strict assessment and voting process. Stephanie Metson, marketing manager at the Vale Resort, said: “The World Travel Awards is internationally recognised as a benchmark of excellence for the travel and tourism industry. To have been named as Wales’ Leading Spa Resort for 2015 is an honour and a reflection of the team’s hard work and commitment at providing the best spa and therapy experience in the country. Calling all Junior Golfers Win a junior driver signed by Bernard Langer We’ve teamed up with Scottish brand Golphinforkids and Dean Davis the author of The A-Z of Junior Golf to give our junior readers the chance to win some fantastic prizes. Golphinforkids is the innovative product range that is transforming children’s golf and combined with the A-Z of Junior Golf this is a fresh and exciting way for children aged 3-11 years to enjoy our great game. Based in Scotland, The Home of Golf, ethos and principles are focused on providing young children with an enjoyable, fun filled and confidence building experience when they are introduced to the great game from the very beginning. Scientifically designed using aerospace technologies, Golphinforkids product designs are specifically engineered to benefit young children aged 3 to 11 years of age and were developed in partnership with The R&A, PGA professionals and Strathclyde University’s biomechanical department. Traditional junior clubs have smaller club heads than adult clubs thus making it more challenging for children to strike the ball. Traditional children’s clubs have a fairly square leading edge. Golphinforkids clubs have a radial sole reducing the resistance at impact to the turf or mat, they also generate more spin on the ball, increasing its trajectory significantly therefore the ball gets airborne quicker and flies higher than traditional children’s clubs. Golf professionals recommend Golphinforkids clubs to all children because there are so many advantages: •

They are 30% lighter than traditional junior clubs, meaning that they are easier to swing

The club heads are larger than normal junior clubs, increasing the probability of connecting with the ball

Easier for children to keep balanced

Encourages children to instinctively hinge and rotate their wrists and arms on the backswing

They are suitable for boys and girls of all ages

They come in a range of colours

The A-Z of Junior Golf on the other hand is an exciting book, which provides children with guidance and helpful hints about

the game of golf through the use of four exciting characters, Harry Hook, Sally Slice, Tommy Topper and Souzy Straight. stampyourballs.com “play the ball you marked”

Golf is a frustrating game at the best of times, none more so than when someone else plays your ball. A faux pas that we have all experienced during one round or another; local businessman and keen golfer, Paul Green, has created a product to ensure you never play the wrong ball again. Paul grew tired of using permanent markers on his new gear – certain that there must be a better, cleaner approach to personalising his golf balls. When he found no quality product in the market, Paul decided to invest his own time in finding a solution for this often embarrassing, and always frustrating, golfing predicament. Not only do stampyourballs.com produce a range of designs, but they also offer branded stampers, fixing any image of your choice to the cap of your stamp. Whether it’s a brand logo or group motif, these smart accessories provide a fun and functional alternative to branded golf balls and are the perfect golf day giveaway for Captains Days, charity or corporate events. Priced at only £5.99, with discounts on larger orders, stampyourballs. com really does marry affordability with performance. Sure to leave an indelible impression on your golf balls and playing partners; make sure you never play the wrong ball again with one of these must have golfing accessories. Over 3 years Paul conceptualised, designed and produced a solution that balances efficacy and value with simplicity and fun. A product that has been put to the test, fine tuned and perfected,stampyourballs.com will leave an indelible impression on your golf ball. Employing technology unique to the market, each stamp uses millions of small holes to ensure that the print is clear, vibrant and long lasting. Offering 100 distinctive designs, there is something for everyone; from national emblems to lucky horseshoes, stampyourballs.com caters to every taste. Using waterproof inks with high durability, these stamps will survive all conditions. No matter if you’re a fair weather player, or hardened competitor, your stamp will remain crisp and recognisable.
