Total:2,089 (from 92 countries and regions) It’s only natural, considering the long history of diplomatic relations and geographical proximity, that the majority of international students studying at Kyushu University are from Asia (84.9%). However, we also have many students from Europe (4.7%) and Africa (4.3%).

Prominent Alumni In line with our traditional emphasis on Asia, we have produced a significant number of notable graduates from that region. They include: Guo Moruo (Chinese author, poet, historian, archaeologist, and government official, M.D. 1923); Luong Dinh Cua (“Father of Vietnamese Agriculture,” B.S. 1947); Vo Tong Xuan (Recipient of a 2003 Ramon Magsaysay Award, Ph.D. 1973 ).

International Master’s Program in Japanese Humanities Graduate School of Humanities

Kyushu University truly offers a unique opportunity to study in Japan. Fukuoka is a vibrant area full of historical significance and cosmopolitan amenities. As a student of the humanities, my prior studies had centered on the Kyoto and Nara area, but one of the greatest joys I have had is discovering all the culture this area has to offer. The campus and libraries are wonderful resources that allow students to deepen their knowledge about their chosen field, and the ability to take classes in both English and Japanese is perfect for students with a future in or connected to Japan.

Ekenechukwu Okafor (From the Federal Republic of Nigeria) International Doctoral Program in Mechanical Engineering Graduate School of Engineering

My over four years of graduate school experience at Kyushu University have been fulfilling. The well-equipped laboratories with advanced research facilities, the international students-friendly university system and campus environment, and the location of the university in one of the world’s most livable cities make Kyushu University a choice institution for oversea graduate studies. I’m impressed with the curriculum of the international graduate program taught entirely in English, the highly experienced and supportive teaching staff, and the international students’ support system of the university. The large international student community with their extracurricular activities has also contributed in making my life here quite blissful.

Junjun Ni (From China)

International Doctoral Program in Dental Science Graduate School of Dental Sciences

The quiet atmosphere, strict professors and kind staffs of Hospital Campus give me a great impression. During the past two years, I enjoyed studying and living in this place. Moreover, the advanced science and technology are deeply attracting me. In every discussion and seminar, I am always learning a lot from my professors and laboratory friends. They guide me, inspire me and enrich my experience in both research and personal life. The greatest changes are I’m more interested in my research and becoming loving sashimi. I just feel proud to be a student of Kyushu University. Hope to see you here.

Campus Locations Kyushu University has five campuses in all, with most in Fukuoka City. Students study on different campuses according to each major. Most students in science courses will study on the Ito Campus, where the latest equipment and facilities are available.

[地球社会統合科学府]

The Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Global Society (ISGS) is a new institution established in 2014. It has been progressively reorganized from the Graduate School of Social and Cultural Studies. The ISGS is a unique interdisciplinary and international institution, offering a broad range of courses across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Teachers from different fields routinely team-teach, creating a vibrant approach in knocking down disciplinary barriers. Our record in promoting international exchange speaks for itself. Over 55% of the graduate students in our standard Master's and Doctoral Programs are international students, and over half of the PhD degree awarded since 2008 have gone to international students. All facilities of the ISGS are located in a brand new building in the new Ito Campus and are well stocked and installed with the latest and the most advanced equipment. Graduate students in the International Programs can take courses selected from the six interdisciplinary courses from a wide range of academic fields.

Programs Offered in English International Master's Program in Integrated Sciences for Global Society International Doctoral Program in Integrated Sciences for Global Society International Master's and International Doctoral Programs in Integrated Sciences for Global Society, taught entirely in English, cover a wide range of subjects of Earth and Biological Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, each with strong interdisciplinary emphasis. Our Graduate School offers six different courses of (1) Comprehensive Earth Sciences, (2) Comprehensive Sciences of Biological Environment, (3) International Cooperation, Security and Safety, (4) Social Diversity and Coexistence, (5) Language, Media and Communication, and (6) Comprehensive East Asian and Japanese Studies. The interdisciplinary course works across these different courses to provide students with improved professional skills and to develop advanced knowledge for understanding Global Society and for finding solutions to global problems. Graduate School of Human-Environment Studies

[人間環境学府]

The Graduate School of Human-Environment Studies was established back in 1998 with the aim of developing an interdisciplinary, cross-sectional approach to both the human and natural sciences. Currently, the Graduate School consists of five Departments: Urban Design, Planning and Disaster Management; Clinical Psychology and Community Studies; Behavior and Health Sciences; Education; and Architecture. Of our five Departments, the Department of Architecture and the Department of Urban Design, Planning and Disaster Management in particular are dedicated to research and education in sustainable built environments and urban systems. We developed our new Master’s and Doctoral Courses to share our mission of environmental sustainability with dedicated students and researchers from around the world. These new multidisciplinary courses offer theoretical and practical knowledge in designing, building, managing sustainable buildings, and urban systems.

Programs Offered in English International Master’s Course in Sustainable Architecture and Urban Systems International Doctoral Course in Sustainable Architecture and Urban Systems The development of low-carbon, resource-efficient buildings and urban centers is becoming extremely important against the background of the ever-increasing consumption of natural resources. Our Master’s and Doctoral courses provide students with opportunities to develop the advanced knowledge and skills required to find innovative solutions to these needs. Our courses consist of urban and architectural design workshops and construction training classes to improve the professional skills of our students. With our diverse resources, we offer unique research opportunities in architectural design, building environment, structural mechanics, urban design, regional planning, and disaster management. These courses will collaborate with major universities in Asia and the UN-HABITAT Fukuoka office in developing a new curriculum. We believe that students of these courses will play an active role as leaders in global sustainability.

LL.D. Program The LL.D. Program offers students the unique opportunity of preparing a doctoral thesis in English whilst studying at a Japanese university. The Program is designed to provide students with the skills required to complete high-level research in law. A core part of the Program is the Annual Law Conference. Initiated in 2006 and organized by LL.D. students, its reputation for thoughtfully addressing cutting edge legal issues has grown, and it will continue to serve as a valuable educational opportunity for our students.

IEBL Program (LL.M. in International Economic and Business Law) In the fall of 1994, the Graduate School of Law established Japan’s first Master’s Program taught entirely in English, the LL.M. in International Economic and Business Law. Drawing upon the support of a Faculty with particular strengths in the fields of economic and business law, the IEBL Program is designed to provide international and Japanese students with the ability to confront the challenges of international economic affairs and commercial transactions.

BiP (Bilingual Master’s Program in Laws LL.M.) Launched in 2009, the BiP offers students the unique opportunity of graduate level legal study in a bilingual environment at a Japanese law faculty. The Program seeks to overcome one of the major obstacles to graduate legal education in Japan, namely that of the language, by providing students with the option of taking classes and writing a thesis in English or Japanese. As such, the Program facilitates rapid improvement in Japanese ability whilst allowing students to engage in classroom study and supervised research across a wide range of legal subjects.

YLP (Young Leaders' Program LL.M.) The Young Leaders' Program was established in 2001 by the Japanese Government in the fields of Public Administration, Business Administration, and Law. In recognition of the success of the graduate programs, Kyushu University was entrusted with the responsibility of offering the Law YLP. The Program has been designed to contribute to nurturing future national leaders in Asia, and is open to young legal professionals and government officials. In addition, it aims to create a network of national leaders who will play key roles in establishing friendly relationships and improved policy planning between Asian countries, including Japan.

Graduate School of Economics

[経済学府]

Restructured in 2003, the Graduate School of Economics now consists of three Departments: Economic Engineering (DEE); Economic Systems (DES); and Business and Technology Management (DBTM). Students associated with the DEE, which has launched English-based programs in 2010, conduct research in the areas of Economic System Analysis, Economic Analysis and Policy, and Mathematical and Computer Sciences. The DES offers instruction and research opportunities in the contemporary world economy and business corporations, while furnishing students with advanced skills for the multilateral, multi-layered, comprehensive analysis of economic systems. The DBTM runs an internationally recognized MBA program (QBS). Capitalizing on the University’s huge technological resources and its geographical proximity to Asia, the QBS seeks to produce professionals with knowledge of not only business management, but also of technology management and Asia.

Programs Offered in English International Master’s Program in Economics (IMPE) International Doctoral Program in Economics (IDPE) The Programs revolve around the study of three areas: Economic System Analysis, Economic Analysis and Policy, and Mathematical and Computer Sciences. Our Master’s Program is characterized by small classes, a wide and well-balanced array of general and specialized subjects (e.g., Advanced Econometrics, Financial Economics, Public Finance, Environmental Economics, Public Economics, and Industrial Organization), and close supervision of thesis writing. In addition to taking specialized subjects at a more advanced level, our Doctoral students take part in research workshops organized by eminent specialists, both within and outside the University. They are also provided with opportunities to participate in research projects conducted by the Department. In addition, they have opportunities to present the outcomes of their research at academic conferences and publish them as discussion papers. After being awarded graduate degrees, students are expected to take up positions in universities, research institutes, private firms, etc.

Graduate School of Design

[芸術工学府]

The Graduate School of Design was formed when the Kyushu Institute of Design and Kyushu University merged in October 2003. To create an environment suitable for study and research of design in the fast-changing 21st century, we established the brand-new Department of Design Strategy in 2008 and restructured the existing Department of Design into four courses. By offering programs that are truly interdisciplinary in nature, as opposed to programs that merely assemble variegated sets of knowledge that are seemingly unrelated to one another, we seek to encourage original and creative ideas in our students. In so doing, we aspire to produce truly creative designers with multifaceted skills and a stock of knowledge that varies from human science and society to nature, who bring our founding ideal of the “humanization of technology” into practice.

Programs Offered in English Doctoral Program of Human Science International Course The Human Science Course aims to provide insight into human physiological and psychological characteristics to design an eco-friendly living environment in which we can comfortably interact with products, systems and equipment. Scientific measurement, engineering and computer-related techniques are studied to assess human physiology, perception and information processing. Students are trained to apply this knowledge to creative design, with an emphasis on design that improves the daily lives of populations with special needs, such as children, women during pregnancy, people with physical or mental disabilities, and the ever-growing population of elderly people. The Human Science Course is taught at Kyushu University’s Ohashi Campus, which houses excellent, high-tech research facilities – an ideal environment for students seeking career paths as design professionals in the engineering, development, research or marketing industry, as well as academia.

Graduate School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering

[システム情報科学府]

The progress of information science, especially the increased applicability of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), has brought about major changes to our economy, society, and culture. Electrical engineering, on the other hand, has helped give rise to highly functional, complicated, large-scale electrical and electronic systems, which serve as the foundation for all information systems. It is therefore natural to expect electrical and electronic engineering to develop in tandem with information science. Our Graduate School, the first graduate school in Japan designed to enable a comprehensive study of both information and electrical-electronics (i & e) technologies, is committed to producing the next generation of researchers and engineers who will contribute to the field with their advanced research abilities and a broad range of expertise.

Programs Offered in English International Doctoral Program in Information Science and Electrical Engineering This program is aiming at providing a platform for foreign students seeking the knowledge and skills required for researchers and engineers in the field of electronic engineering. Our approach is decidedly interdisciplinary, drawing freely on developments in information science and electrical engineering. The subjects, on which students can focus, include VLSI engineering, radio frequency (RF) integrated circuit design, wireless communication systems and networks, and microwave engineering. We take pride in our individualized approach to education, establishing an advisory committee for each student made up of our faculty members and renowned experts from private firms, other universities, etc. The advisory committee, in consultation with the student, designs a curriculum in accordance with his/her research focus, regularly checks his/her progress, and offers guidance and supervision. The committee also offers advice on possible career paths in industry, research institutes, and academia.

Graduate School of Bioresource and Bioenvironmental Sciences

[生物資源環境科学府]

Restructured in 2010, the Graduate School of Bioresource and Bioenvironmental Sciences currently consists of five Departments: (1) Bioresource Sciences; (2) Agro-Environmental Sciences; (3) Agricultural and Resource Economics; (4) Bioscience and Biotechnology; and (5) Innovative Science and Technology for Bio-industry. Each Department encompasses between two and four divisions, including over 70 laboratories, covering fields as wide-ranging as forestry, fishery, animal science, and agricultural economics. We believe that the major responsibilities of agricultural scientists entail, among others, meeting the food- and environment-related challenges increasingly faced by the international community. In order to meet these challenges, we – a conglomerate of leading researchers and specialists who are highly knowledgeable in the fields of life science, environmental science and socio-economics – strive to make contributions to the stable global supply of food and materials, environmental conservation, and health and human well-being.

Programs Offered in English International Development Research Course (M.Sc.) International Development Research Course (Ph.D.) These Courses – first introduced in 1994 – are among the first English language programs offered by Kyushu University. We have designed our curricula to be especially suited to the needs of students from developing countries who aspire to contribute to global sustainable development. All of our five Departments offer both Master’s and Doctoral Programs, except Innovative Science & Technology for Bio-industry, which admits Doctoral candidates only. Upon admission, students are assigned to one of our Departments. One of our major strengths is the range of scholarship opportunities which we offer. For candidates interested in pursuing a Master’s degree, government-funded Human Resource Development scholarships (JDS) are available, and currently more than ten JDS scholars (from Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Lao-PDR) study with us. Since 2010, we have also started offering Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarships (ADB-JSP). This financial aid, together with MEXT Scholarships, should enable talented students from developing countries to have privileged access to the high quality education and research that we offer.

Graduate School of Integrated Frontier Sciences

[統合新領域学府]

The Graduate School of Integrated Frontier Sciences (IFS) is the 18th and newest graduate school at Kyushu University. The IFS was created with the dual aims of offering a mechanism for intellectual exploration and education to open up new scientific frontiers, and helping to restructure and integrate scientific knowledge. The IFS seeks to broaden intellectual horizons by exploring and integrating advanced and specialized scientific knowledge, as well as by producing highly skilled experts. The IFS consists of three Departments: (1) Kansei Science, which studies human sensitivity (kansei) from the standpoint of users, the main beneficiaries of knowledge; (2) Automotive Science (AMS), which explores automobile technologies and the kinds of automotive societies to come in the near future; and (3) Library Science, which seeks to provide solutions to such emerging issues as how to manage information and knowledge properly, and how to secure access to information.

Programs Offered in English International Master’s Program in Automotive Science International Doctoral Program in Automotive Science Developing comfortable, safe cars that are also energy and resource efficient is a goal of great urgency for the car industry. Instead of just manufacturing them, however, characteristics such as their relationship with people, society, and environment must also be considered. We also need to make use of knowledge and insights from both the humanities and social sciences, and integrate all these aspects to create a new body of knowledge. The AMS is the first knowledge hub designed for this purpose in Japan, and there is nothing like it anywhere else in the world. Through the integration of knowledge, the AMS seeks to create a new automotive society and educate highly capable experts who are able to innovatively resolve a variety of issues involving automobiles and frontier technologies.

Fukuoka, the home of Kyushu University, has a population of over 1.5 million. The trip from Tokyo to Fukuoka takes around 90 minutes by plane. With its mild climate, Fukuoka is said to be one of Asia’s most pleasant cities to live. In fact, the Newsweek magazine’s international edition selected Fukuoka as one of the “World’s 10 Hottest Cities,” along with Las Vegas (USA) and Munich (Germany) in 2006. While the streets of Tenjin, the commercial center of the city, are lined with modern buildings and department stores, students can also enjoy natural beauty of the nearby seaside and mountains. All these sites are located in the suburbs, and numerous cultural and historical buildings such as temples and shrines are also readily accessible. Fukuoka serves as a gateway to Asia, both geographically and historically, and it has a dynamic, cosmopolitan atmosphere. There are abundant information sources for visitors from overseas, including free English publications, FM radio stations broadcast in various languages, street signs in four languages, and shops selling foods from abroad. International students have few difficulties living in Fukuoka. The city is welcoming to many cultures, as evidenced by the establishment of Kyushu’s first mosque. It is true that Japan is prone to earthquakes. However, Fukuoka is said to be one of the most earthquake-resistant cities in Japan. Moreover, Fukuoka is over 1,000km away from Fukushima where a 9.0-earthquake struck in 2011. The levels of radiation in the city remain essentially the same as before the crisis.
