GROUNDS Grounds is responsible for managing the physical assets and natural resources of the campus in a cost effective and efficient manner, to ensure that the exterior environment is aesthetically pleasing, safe, and accessible during inclement weather for students, staff, faculty, and guests. Grounds’ core businesses include Maintenance and Repair (snow removal, herbaceous & woody plant care, turf care, irrigation, underground utilities, roads, sidewalks/pathways and parking lots); Design & Implementation (irrigation design & installation); Campus Cleanliness (outdoor waste collection, hard surface cleaning, graffiti removal); & Other Services (Commemorative Planting Program, Landscape Infrastructure, Outdoor Space Use Coordination, Landscape Material Recovery).

HOURS OF OPERATION Regular business hours are Monday – Friday 7:00 am – 3:00 pm. Reducing staffing levels provide services Saturday & Sunday 7:00 am – 3:00 pm. Seasonal demand during the winter session may require shift alterations.

DEFINITION OF TASKS Glossary of Definitions Catch basin A receptacle used for collecting surface drainage that is connected through drains or conduits to a storm water system. Disease and insect control (integrated pest management, IPM) A system that uses all the appropriate methods and techniques to control pest populations at levels below those that causes economic injury. This system may include cultural practices natural remedies, and selective pesticides. Floral beds/plantings A collection of showy herbaceous plants that form a bed or planter; typically defined by a border.

Graffiti removal Removal of drawings or writing that is placed on walls or other smooth surfaces. Typically applied with spray paint and found in public places. Hard landscaping (hardscape) A landscape term used for areas that are composed of brick, concrete, or other hard surfaces. May be absent of softscape features. Inspections An examination or careful scrutiny to ensure compliance. Irrigation –playing field An artificial application of water to the soil; used to assist in the growing of agricultural crops, maintenance of landscapes, and re-vegetation of disturbed soils in dry areas and during periods of inadequate rainfall. Pruning Removal of dead, diseased, unnecessary, or unwanted twigs, branches, flowers, fruits, and roots from plants or for shaping / ornamental purposes. Repairs Fixing, removing, or preventing trouble arising from damage to softscape and hardscape. Retention pond A basin used to manage storm water runoff to prevent flooding, downstream erosion, and improve water quality. Roadways – asphalt A prepared and serviced thoroughfare intended for vehicular traffic.

Sanitary sewers A sewer carrying only domestic sewage. Shrub beds A collection of fairly low-growing woody plants that form a bed or planter, typically defined by a border. Sidewalks – concrete A prepared and serviced path along the side of a road intended for pedestrian traffic. Snow & ice control (SNIC) The management of snow and ice including the physical or chemical removal of accumulations of ice or snow from transportation or parking surfaces. Soft landscaping (softscape) A landscape term used for areas that are composed of lawn ornamental plantings. Often absent of hardscape features. Storm sewers A sewer for conveying storm and surface water only. Surfaces – sweep, clean, wash Areas receiving cleaning, predominantly hardscape surfaces. Turf care Care for a flat area completely covered with a thick mat of grass plants, often used for sports fields and park area. Turf areas are mowed with standard mowing equipment. Underground utilities Strom, sewer, water, irrigation, and other utilities located underground.
