Brainstorming can be a fun and creative way to have a group of people generate ideas. In order for a group to be effective it is wise to prepare ahead of time to create a fun and positive experience.

3

It will be helpful to have the group set up some rules to follow. Discuss and plan out the rules making sure everyone understands. Do your part to remain friendly and encouraging. Don’t make fun of or put down anyone else’s ideas. Laughter and groans will keep people from sharing their thoughts. Everyone should feel like part of the group.

How would you feel if someone laughed at your idea?

What type of things should you avoid saying?

4

What things could you say that would be encouraging?

Group Brainstorming Remember that ALL ideas are good ideas at this point. Remember the point of brainstorming is to generate as many ideas as possible. You aren’t trying to debate which ideas are the best. Build on the ideas that other members are sharing. It is a group effort and everyone should be involved. Use the silent times to think and be creative. Listen carefully to everyone. Assigning jobs at the beginning is a good place to start too. Who will write things down? Who will lead the group? The recorder has to be fast at writing and have good handwriting. Encourage everyone to write down their own ideas in case ideas happen too fast. The leader should be good at keeping people accountable to the rules set up as the leader’s main role is to run the meeting. When do you take breaks? What direction could we try next? 5

Review the topic being discussed. It is important that each person in the group understands why you are brainstorming. If the topic isn’t clear it could lead to confusion and create problems. Use tools and techniques to help like mind maps, scamper, sketches, diagrams, or cartoons. Be creative and think outside the box. Wild and crazy ideas are welcomed. Write on a large whiteboard or on papers that you hang up. Make sure everyone can see it clearly.

6

Group Brainstorming Let people get up and move around or take small breaks. This helps to keep your energy up and re-focus. Who wants to sit still for a long time? The leader needs to watch the time and make sure that the session doesn’t run too long.

Do you think that you could lead a brainstorming session? Yes or No and explain.

7

What sorts of projects or problems can you brainstorm about? List the steps you would go through to get your brainstorm going!”
