Discover a university committed to helping its students unlock their full potential Welcome to the University of Surrey Making the choice to study at a university is a big step for students. You will be entering into a world full of new opportunities, new friends and new ways of thinking. When you take this step you will want to make sure that you receive the right level of support and guidance on your terms.

These activities include summer schools, on-campus taster days and workshops. Campus visits will also be organised for those care leavers who may wish to visit alone or in smaller groups. To ensure that costs such as travel are not a barrier to participating in events, care leavers visiting the University will have the option to be reimbursed.

At Surrey we provide a challenging yet supportive environment for our students to explore their potential and develop their talents. We have a team dedicated to providing care leavers with a complete package of in-depth information, support and advice. From the moment you show interest in us right the way through your time at Surrey, we aim to provide you with all the relevant information and support you may require. This service is completely optional, and it is down to you to decide what, and how much support you need.

To complement the range of activities available to care leavers, you will also be able to request detailed information and guidance from WP&OR on the application procedure and details of finance packages.

Your Guide

Once you have made the decision to begin your higher education at the University of Surrey you will be provided with an optional package of financial, educational and emotional support to help you fully enjoy your student experience. On entry to Surrey, we can provide you with a guaranteed minimum bursary of £1000 providing you are under 25 and have been cared for by any local authority for at least 13 weeks since the age of 14 and are not following an NHS - funded programme.

We have designed this guide as a starting point to help steer you through the process of applying to Surrey, and to make you aware of the full range of information readily available for you to access, if you choose to. We want to ensure that any particular support or help you may require is recognised and met before you begin your time with us. We have provided contacts on the opposite page, should you have any questions.

Complete Preparation At Surrey we understand the importance of preparing care leavers for the next step into university education. Our Department for Widening Participation and Outreach (WP&OR) offers a practical and engaging range of activities to enable care leavers to gain a better understanding of life and study at Surrey.

A Welcoming Start We understand that coming to University may present some of our students with different and sometimes complex challenges, and these challenges will need to be met to ensure that they get the most out of their time at Surrey.

Leading up to your course we can arrange specific personal support if you request it and this will be available throughout the duration of your course. To ensure that your transition into university life goes as smoothly as possible, we will also provide you with year-round University accommodation throughout the normal duration of your programme of study if required.

To ensure that you have access to any advice or support you need, you will be allocated a single point of contact in the central Student Care Services team who will assist you with any queries or problems you may have during your studies.

Once you express an interest in Surrey, bespoke campus visits and details of events, workshops or summer schools will be provided for you by our Widening Participation Coordinator, Sarah Linington.

In Detail We place great importance on ensuring that care leavers have total ownership of all the information about their background. When you express interest in us, any information that you share with us will be strictly confidential unless you give permission for the information to be shared. If permitted and or requested to, we can agree with you a protocol for sharing any relevant information with the responsible local authority, trust or charity that you have contact with.
